I take actual measurements to show how big this mini-truck actually is. Explain how the bed light works, Have to have ignition on with parking brake on. Sounds funny, but it took me a while to figure that out! I also explain how the 4 wheel drive system works.
Off for a little road trip to the diner, the wife doesn't like it much, Adjust the bed latches to stop the rattle, check the rear diff fluid and see there is a gas tank drain! Then it's clean up time! Scrub and wax wile having a few drinks, Mark gets crop dusted and loves it, Andrew and Mark pick up the rear of truck Blade stops by (he's trashed) but its all good. Finished up the booze, I mean cleaning about 2am. Good times!
Dihatzu Hijet (translates to midget in Japanese) Climber Mini-truck, this one is a 1992, 7th Gen, S83P, 660cc Minitruck. The “climber” means it has rear axle lock. Amir has about 60 units in stock, he was very helpful.
Researching online I did find l lot of information, but Amir explains a LOT more than I knew, he has been in the business for 15 years. Plus if Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys has one, it HAS to be cool!
Don't forget you're buying a used vehicle, check it all out, they're over 25 years old! Some are in much better shape than others. Check for leaks, CV boots ripped, Loose suspension, Clutch slippage, clunks etc. Just like any used vehicle
S839 specs:
660cc 4 vavle 3 cyl engine 48-53hp carburated
weight: 1500 lbs
length 10'8" (128"). width 4'6" (54") w/o mirrors. Height 5'10" (70")
Load capacity 800 lbs
I purchased mine at Boeki USA, www.boekiusa.com has their updated inventory. Ask for Amir and tell them MOTOCHEEZ sent you!
I know there may be other videos of this.. but this is my Cheezy style!
More info (Wikipedia):
The Daihatsu Hijet (Japanese: ダイハツハイゼット) is a cabover microvan and pickup truck produced and sold by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu since 1960. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans (Hiace and Hilux), the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's Kei trucks and Microvans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab, Suzuki Carry and the Nissan Clipper.

For anyone with questions about fitting at 6'3". I bought one sight unseen and was relieved to see that I fit just fine. Sure, your knees come up near the steering wheel, but they do not get in the way and they don't touch the dashboard. There's a couple of inches of space between my knees and the dash. There is plenty of headroom. I hope this is helpful.
Awesome thanks for the info
“Time to let the Japanese air out and put in some American air...’Merica”.
Dang near peed my pants.
😄😄👍
I'm 6' tall and I fit fine in mine.
I'm sorry to say that you certainly DO NOT get a free parking spot, like you wife said, that would be nice! In fact when you register a vehicle here in Tokyo you have to PROVE you have a parking spot to park it, the local cops come and measure the space to make sure your vehicle will fit.
Get a piece of 3\4" 4x8 plywood and cut it to fit the back, paint it on both sides, it will be really good.
BTW our plywood here in Japan is 182cm x 91 cm which is about 3'x6' that is why the bed is the size it is.
With the lift kit and those tires that thing should be unstoppable, just put a better bumper and a winch on it and you should be able to go up the sides of cliffs LOL.
Great little trucks!
Cheers from Tokyo!
That's what she meant, we watched videos where the police come to approve your parking spot. I did add my custom front winch bumper ua-cam.com/video/PKvkVUYEZbk/v-deo.html
@@MotoCheez I have been looking at these for a while, but after your 6'4" friend sat in it, there's no way I am going to fit at 6'6"... :( Oh well.
Answer for big, tall, and fat: Jumbo Cab. I love mine. It adds enough room to lean the seats back. It makes the engine access panel turn into two panels, with the smaller one in the bed.
Pure magic. Having da best time with friends. Blessings welcome to the mini family, K-trucking
It's making me baked... I love it! 😂🤣😂 Kudos to your friend Lemmy!
Hilarious! That was the best part!
Thanks for the further detailed review, much like I would comb over a used vehicle. Funny watching reminds me of working on side-by-sides/UTV, everything micro.
Decent. I like the Trailer Park Boys references.
Deeeecent
Deee-chent!
I’ve always wanted to purchase one of these since I was a little girl. I can not wait to see the whole series.
TY, they are a fun lil truck!
Lovely little motor and the the steering wheel is on the right side!
😁😁👍
It’s a little tight to get out but I love it. My new one is a 91 Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo 2wd.
I've got an 88 suzuki Carry DB71T Highcab model, so mine has a little bit more hight.💗👍
Thanks for sharing info I’ve always wanted to buy a small pick up that size.
OMG. It's fun as hell, getting it on the road soon
Love it. Watching all parts. Love that diner, too! -- the only problem you have with a low-mileage vehicle that old, is that all those miles were stop-and-go, low speed, in busy Japanese delivery operations. Expect to go through the engine-- while they are extremely reliable, carbon can build up. Check plugs and, if visibly carbonized, pull off the heads. But not before you get replacement gaskets!
Thanks!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
After seeing yours I am convinced they all come off the same dies. The sheet metal and a lot of the other stuff looks identical to my 95 Mitsubishi mini cab
Hello from Ellington,Ct. love the truck.
👋👋👋hi. TY!
what did you use to clean the paint work with?
I have a little truck envy. Wish I could drive one of those around town in Texas.
I'm pretty sure you can in TX, check with some dealers. www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/laws/minitrucks
Rush. Fireball... Good boys and good brew. Who could ask for more?
🔥🔥🔥⚽
😄😄👍👍
3:06 Love the brown SJ
you boys are funny
enjoy the truck
they now sell them in all sorts of colours here in japan
Wish we could import newer kei trucks 😁😁
@@MotoCheez I am confident that you can.
I do not work as an exporter of goods, but my Japanese language skills are solid and I hear of many exporters of cars to Inida and the Middle East (2nd hand cards).
It is likely that exporters are also trying to make money in the US market.
For reference, a new K truck (grades and therefore prices vary) costs about 1.1 million yen (around 11,000 USD I guess).
They usually have single button for 2WD/4WD selection now, too.
They can frequently be seen on out of town roads clocking about 100KPH/62MPH without making undue noise.
Here, they are mostly used by farmers or small businesses delivering stuff that's not more than aroud 300 kilos or so.
There are still plenty of (that look to me like) 15-20-year-old ones used daily here - a testament to their lngevity.
They do seem to sound very, very 'tappety' to me even when fairly new, if you follw me.
I am from the UK and we call part of the intake/exhaust valve assembly 'tappets' and it's a part that makes a pronounced ticking sound increasing with engine speed. I reckon you know that, though.
Anyhow, good luck with getting a newer K... there may be an opportunity for me here.... :)
staninjapan07 well, we can. But they can’t be registered unless they’re brought in at 25 years or older.
@@MotoCheez Oh!
My 4 speed manual has 2 high, 4 high, and 4 low in all gears. Just got some 7x14 rims for her.
Sweet! What you get?
Try to watch japanes multicab modified show.. super nice design..
Then little trucks look awesome! Can't believe they make lift kits for them.
👍👍🔥 I'm loving it!
Ain't much to it. Just a couple blocks and a couple shackles. Can do it in about an hour if you're used to it. Probably a little more if not. But not by much. Neat little trucks
The timing has a tendency to start slipping pretty quick.but just turn it back into position and tighten the bolt. Wanna say about everything on it is either 8,10,or 12 mm. Never ever worry about what kind of fuel is in it. Think they run overseas on seventy something octane. We had a real problem with blowing off the seals on the oil filters. But after a little sourcing it wasn't a problem. Napa can solve it
Awesome, thanks for the info! I'm going to do an oil change soon, I'll check the timing as well
👍
Painted mine NATO green and put 13inch wheels on my Suzuki.
OD green is my fav color for off-road. Sweet!
Why buy a $10000+ side by side when you can build one for half the price and actually have a proper transmission :) Can't wait to see part 3 and beyond!
Right?! And heat, wipers, legal for road etc..
@@MotoCheez I don't think I ever thanked you for all of the Hawk/Magician dirt bike videos. Thanks to those videos I own a Hawk and the wife is rocking the Magician. With the usual mods both have been great bikes.
@@ericharrison619 :) Thanks! yeah, they are pretty awesome bikes for the money.
Those are so cool
👍👍🔥🔥
@2:47, has to best the best soundbyte of the year or decade!
Haha! 😄😄
i wanna do mini truck stuff. yall seem like fun dudes
Do it!! 👍👍
Put rubber tubing on these side lock handles, instead of bending the wires.
That's a good idea!
nice thanks
I’m currently saving my money to buy one of these. The only problem is I don’t have any practice on driving stick lol.
They’re pretty easy to learn on
Do you know if that place you went to in NJ to get the truck imports the little cars. I love these kei vehicles, and I'd love to get a little Mazda AZ-1 :-)
Yes, they do. Have a second video if going there.. info is in description
Just bought one of these trucks! What cleaner did you get all the grime off with?!
It was actually an industrial cleaner called speedball
i washed my truck one time turned out it was red.
Haha, really!?
Hey youre right around the corner from me in wingdale ny!! I want one of these trucks so bad!!
Yeah. You're close!
There are a few guys in Wingdale who have minis!!
@@MotoCheez Ive seen a few here and there on properties, sucks that new york is so tough about registering these
I know! You'd think they'd want more 50mpg truck on the road.
Come to find out, I have a LOT of comments from people in NY that did register these! probably under the 25 years or older rule, but thats OK
Who couldn't use a 4x4 truck that two drinking buddies can lift by hand and has built in bottle cap openers? Genius! 😂
That's what I'm saying 🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@MotoCheez How much was it?
@@MotoCheez There's a place here in VA that sells them, but I think his prices are too high.
@@MotoCheez What cleaner are you using?
$4500, I have all info the description
Love the Trailer Park Boys references. Great show.
One of my top favs. Most the show is improv! Love it too 🔥🔥🔥
It'd be awesome to restore one of these
👍👍👍
I like it
👍👍😁
jammin to some rush ah just like the boys
🔥🔥
Tha diner is so familiar. Im from ct aswell.
It's in gaylordsville
Some things to think about before buying one... They basically never make it past 50K miles. They rust like an SOB. Often they are hitting 20k and still have the original oil in them (eep!) because they never change oil unless they are in for other service in most parts of Japan. Basically, these can be bought in Japan for about $250-500 in that condition as they are considered scrap when they look like that. The parts can be hard to find unless there is a junkyard for them nearby. If you are in an accident, you die, and insurance can be a bitch to get.
Not trying to be a downer, but I have driven them in Japan and they are considered kind of disposable there.
Looking good, watch out for those deer. Pretty sure they would win in a fight with your truck. You going to use rust killer or a grinder on the bed?
Haha. You're right!
You do not have any problems in your state to get a title, registration, tag and inspection?
No, many CT guys commented they pass easily. As long as the tires are good and lights are working
I'm in Middletown CT... I want to pick one up could you or recommend them or someone else....thank you...
There's a guy over that way that advertises on Facebook I can't remember his name but he gets a couple mini trucks at a time He's got some pretty good prices
4 1/2 x 6.5 ... you might be able to get a cap for that and make it a off road camper too
Another guy showed me there's a "Barbie". It's a camper for these. Badass. May have to do the camper idea 😄
Only room for one though🤪
Twin bed will fit! That's 2!
Damn that will make an awesome side-by-side. Also be great for hunting.
Yeah, that's what I'm going for!
Damn I was thinking from the first video I want one. Then when you said you were 5'10" other guy 6'2" and could barely fit my dreams of getting one were over I'm 6'5" oh well still enjoyed the video.
Aww they do make extra cabs.
So does a 6'2 250 pound dude stand a chance ??
My friend Jeff who went in the mines with me is buying one. Hes bigger than that.
I'm interested in one of these to. Could you PLEASE give me the measurements from the furthest point of the Front Bumper to the Rear Spring Hanger hinge point on the Frame? Exact "IF" Possible. just behind the hole on the frame for the Hanger, PLEASE.❗
Sure. It's 9'10" or 120" from front bumper to rear of rear shackle.
@@MotoCheez Man, I Thank You Alot for this info. I guess I'll have to make the rear-end with 4-Link and take off the leaf springs so it will fit on my Bug-0ut Flatbed Trailer. Thank Again, for your measurements👍🏼
🔥🔥
Man. I wish I had one of these. My F350 with the 460 loves tooo much gas.
It won't replace that F350, but great for in between. if I had a big pick up and I bought one of these I tried to paint it and do the same scheme so it look almost the same
Where can I get one in Massachusetts
Not sure, check marketplace, I see them on there.
9:46 what's this mini liqueur? So cute! And perfect for celebration of the mini-truck! Nice video!
it's fireball. tastes like a cinnamon roll.
Haha! Fireball!!!!
A free Capp openers
Wow been following this mini-truck series and just noticed in this video that diner you visited is literally just a few minutes from my Sister's house in New Milford...
👍 YES, great little diner. Cheap meals, I go there often.
@@MotoCheez Yeah I've been investigating what it takes to get a Mini-Truck road legal in VT. There is no specific laws preventing it, but the state puts a lot of effort in making it difficult to register. I guess there is one case of a guy I talked to on reddit that took it to court and won.
Yeah, being an old car. It's a classic so I don't see the problem. Yeah, Won the court case? Awesome
There's a local guy here in my area in NY that has drives one of these mini trucks. He works for the town, so I see it every time I go to visit my grandparents. I think the only thing he did to it was put some bigger wheels on it with better road tires. I'd love to have one of these things to help with just yard work and firewood. Someday maybe. :)
That's awesome! I'm still on the same tank of gas when I bought it and filled it up. Talk to that guy, maybe he wAnts to upgrade and will sell to you cheap 😁
Do they only have white and blue?
I believe so
What kind of cleaner were you using? Something special?
It was industrial strength cleaner
What is your friend using to clean the truck ?
Speedball industrial cleaner
If the wife likes it your golden!
😁😁👍 she's "ok" with it. Doesn't like being seen in it hahah
@@MotoCheez that's funny 😂
😁
The mini truck makes me look fat🤭
😸
Do you now if they have a diesel engine on this one.
I don't believe they offered a diesel in this model.
After you drive that for a little bit you will be turning on the windshield wipers on your car instead of the turn signals
Already have, haha
So true. I drove Toyota forklift with AT for work. Get off work get in car and used right turn signal for forward gear so many times.
😁👍👍
Yo I eat at that diner in Gaylordsville quiet often.
Nice! Say hi to Sage (she has my key fob) and Gigi Cheap to eat there.
Holy shit we can register these in CT? I wonder if a sportbike can fit in the bed. If it can, I'm sold!
Yep! I just saw one on a mini Instagram posting! If my ZX10R wasn't burried in storage I'd put it on the mini and snap a photo.
@@MotoCheez Oh but they aren't capable of highway? Damn, was looking for transport for trackdays. Nice to see a CT Motovlogger, like your channel man.
Unfortunately no for the highway, unless you stuff the sportbike motor in there (I'll do if the engine blows) thanks!!
How much are you into this thing after buying it lift and tires??? Was it $4,500 with tax and everything?? Thanks if you can let me know I’ve been interested for a while.trying to find someplace close to Arizona that has these (some place in California has to sell them) thanks cool channel!
Tax was state tax when registering, I'm still under $2000 in add-ons. boekiusa is west coast dealer near CA
MotoCheez Awesome thank you.
I want to know how it will do in the mud. How big is the gas tank?
We hunt and our roads are very muddy with creeks to cross trying to stay with hounds. (Yes, we chase coonhounds)
Do you know how big of mud tires you can place on one of those trucks?
Thinking about the gas/diesel mileage per gallon.
How much clearance do they have under them?
By the way, it looked like you and your friends were having way to much fun in the video.
They will take 24" tires, this thing is a mountain goat!!! watch ua-cam.com/video/MSMRJjDxvcc/v-deo.html
Now - I have watched well into season 4, epidsode - ehh - was it playing in the deep snow ?
Now - i may have dozed off for a minute, but in the early days, Mini Truck had NO tip bed - but Dump Truck did. Now Mini has that awesome camo dress - AND tip bed ?!?
What happened - looks like Mini still has all the extras, You put in, and with the camo dress, it should be easy to recognize them. In the episode where You are escavating around your house, You even mention that your welds on the frame under the tip bed still holds up well - but it was Dump's frame that needed welding !?
Please enlighten me on this - else I can't sleep tonight !
Oh - love this documentary - but living in a larger city in a flat country kinda kills the fun in owning such a fine vehicle.
Btw - building a camper for it could be made as a pretty light unit - perhaps using boat building techniques - look for "stitch-and-glue" for a fast, sturdy and very light way of building dinghys etc - the method could easily be adapted ;o)
LOL, yeah it goes fast!! I did an episode on the dump build. No welds on frame, just the frame I built for the dump.
@@MotoCheez Ah - that makes sense - gotta find that episode ;o)
But do chech the stitch-and-glue methode - you can do allmost any shape with it, basically stitching thin plywood sheets and gluing with epoxy after.
Another light-weight build could be done in foam sheets (!) - then cover with veawe and epoxy. Used in building teardrop trailers etc, extremely light, stiff - and good insulation ;o)
You seem to love it ,, would you recommend to buy one of this ?
Yes, it's great for what I need! I like it way better than my side by sides I've had!
Tnx I’m looking to get one and modify
👍👍🔥🔥
A lot of these kei trucks have an odometer that will roll over at 100,000, you possibly could have a kei truck that has only been driven 20k miles but I find that to be highly unlikely for a 20+ old vehicle
Yes. Most likely they have
I'm 6 foot about 300lbs....I'm a big man....think I'll fit behind the wheel?
It would be real tight. An extra cab “jumbo” would be good
I had one of these in Afghanistan for a FOB runner. So much fun. Let me know when you want to sell it. I'm in Southington.
👍👍👍😁 going to be hard to part with....
@@MotoCheez looks like im taking a trip to NJ. the wife's gonna be pissed
😁😁 lol, she'll get over it, mine did
How much did it cost to buy?
I paid $4500 for mine. Links in description of videos
came for the truck, stayed for trailer park boys. no regerts
So yeah, just watching videos about a truck I didn't know existed in the US until 20 minutes ago. #internet
So how much more was the dump option? I'm glad it didn't have six more cc's, who wants a 666 CC truck
Was about $1000 more. Yeah haha
Mount it a .50 cal machine gun on the bed
😁😁👍🔥
5'10" is a perfect size. I am a 5'9" woman. I am tall for a girl but it's great because I am right at the average male height so everything fits me comfortably. lol Mom is 5' 0" when she stands on a 2x4 and lies about her height and dear old dad is 6'7". Growing up, mom could never see over the wheel or reach the pedals and everything was to small for dad so a certainly appreciate my average size.
My god, I love those little trucks. Makes me want to buy a ranch just to have a reason to get one. When I was a kid in the 70's my uncle helped me build a go cart. We used a 360cc 2stroke Bulltaco engine. lol Amazigly I survived after racing that thing all over his ranch.
One of these would be a little more suitable for my age now.
Haha. Great story! They are fun lil trucks. My wife is 5' I have to get her to drive it now!!
@@MotoCheez I am watching you do the CV boot now. Wow, they really are highly engineered vehicles. Just like a full sized truck run through the shrinking machine.
Yeah, they're built pretty good
I GOT BOY CAT THAT LOOKS THE SAME NAMED DOUBLE
Double must be a cute kitty! 😁
there is official nudge bars for them
Nice. I didn't see any when I searched. It's always easier to build off mounting brackets prefabbed
Bob Ross shirt ftw
👍👍👍
You need TRD stickers all over that bad boy😁
😄
How much did it cost
I paid $4,500
Are they newer? Geesh. $7500, I'd take the Gamble and import myself
That's cray cray! I port directly!
What did it cost?
I paid $4500, all information on it I put in description.
@@MotoCheez thanks!!!
みんな、ミニトラック好きなんですね😄
Now I remember why I stopped drinking , too much potty mouth.
@#@*! Yeah!
Bigger tires are actually going to slow it down. With an increased tire radius you Lose top speed
True, it Rob's power, but this Hijet seemed to run out of gear in 4th revving out like it needed another gear. The taller tires took some power away, but cruises at higher speeds better
Uh no. That's totally backwards. Larger tires will reduce the horsepower, but will increase the speed at a given rpm.
How much you pay for it
$4500, they're way up now
My wife loves angry orchard and fireball....... so there ya go.
Woohoo! Now how about a mini truck!!??
Anybody notice the fireball whiskey
🔥🔥🔥🔥
My mom won't let go of the oh-sh!t handle when riding in mine. "Japanese sardine trap" she calls it.😂🤘😈💗
Hahahahah. Good one
Man I have been wanting to get a crappy golf cart for my property but I might be hauling one of these things home to Georgia. I mean that little thing is perfect for where I live. I could even take it up the road to the gas store for supplies and diesel. Really stoked about this thing here! Biggest issue I could see would be parts acquisition.
Parts are available, maintenance items are pretty easy and other parts you can get from Japan.
三重県から!(From Mie prefecture!)
Awesome, thank you. Wish I could find the previous owner. I have the key with writing on it.

I like the video's but the head cam makes me nauseous. :S
Yeah I've got a few comments on that because being first person there's a lot of motion kind of like a video game. But it keeps my hands-free and gives to perspective that I like. Sorry about that
