    I decided to make the purchase on a Dihatzu Hijet (CORRECTION does not translates to midget in Japanese) Climber Mini-truck, this one is a 1992, 7th Gen, S83P, 660cc Minitruck. The “climber” means it has rear axle lock. Amir has about 60 units in stock, he was very helpful.
    Researching online I did find l lot of information, but Amir explains a LOT more than I knew, he has been in the business for 15 years. Plus if Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys has one, it HAS to be cool!
    Don't forget you're buying a used vehicle, check it all out, they're over 25 years old! Some are in much better shape than others. Check for leaks, CV boots ripped, Loose suspension, Clutch slippage, clunks etc. Just like any used vehicle
    S839 specs:
    660cc 4 valve 3 cyl engine 48-53hp carbureted
    weight: 1500 lbs
    length 10'8" (128"). width 4'6" (54") w/o mirrors. Height 5'10" (70")
    Load capacity 800 lbs
    I purchased mine at Boeki USA, www.boekiusa.com has their updated inventory. Ask for Amir and tell them MOTOCHEEZ sent you!

    I know there may be other videos of this.. but this is my Cheezy style!
    More info (Wikipedia):
    The Daihatsu Hijet (Japanese: ダイハツハイゼット) is a cabover microvan and pickup truck produced and sold by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu since 1960. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans (Hiace and Hilux), the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's Kei trucks and Microvans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab, Suzuki Carry and the Nissan Clipper.

    I'm in Tokyo, have been for 28+ years.
    The Kei trucks (Kei means "Light Weight") are great, cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure.
    The engines are 660cc three cylinder.
    For traction the Subaru are the best, because the engine is in the rear.
    You can tell the older trucks by the round headlights, the square or rectangular lights are on the newer trucks.
    I'm a carpenter, and I have a Subaru sambar Micro van, it's 10 years old and I plan on having it for a very long time.
    You should get 100,000km out of the motor without any trouble, at 100,000 Km it's time to change the timing belt, other than that they run forever.
    Great trucks!
    Cheers from Tokyo!

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 років тому +8

      Hi, thanks for the information. I considered the sambar but they do not come with an axle lock which I need for the terrain around here as you can see haha.

    • @TokyoCraftsman
      @TokyoCraftsman 5 років тому +15

      Well I'm in Tokyo so I don't need 4wd, but when it snows (yes it snows in Tokyo) with just good snow tires I've got more traction than most guys with chains, because the weight is over the rear tires.
      You can get 13" rims for these trucks, so you can put larger tires on them.
      Cheers!

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 років тому +6

      True! I wish the 13" rims for this hijet we're available in USA. Hard to find except ATV rims

      Sambar is great that has a body-on-frame, rear mounted supercharged 4-cyli, coil spring rear suspension.
      However, Sambar truck with diff lock and supercharger is super rare.

    Glad I saw this! I've been looking for one of the Japanese Kei trucks since I worked at Yosemite in the early 80's; they used them as utility carriers and trash haulers, but all were made with left-hand drive. A dealer in Reno was selling them, but they were limited to 25 mph for some reason. I'll be keeping up with your progress. Thanks!

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 років тому +1

      If it was limited to 25 miles per hour, they were the newer import trucks that could not be registered for the road. If it's over 23 years old you can register it as a classic.

    I bought my 1992 Suzuki Carry from Amir last spring. Amir is great to deal with, and I love my mini truck. I was going to buy a utility vehicle, and am so glad I didn't. I lifted it 2" and put 24" off road tires on the existing rims. The truck will go anywhere. It also will carry way more than it's own weight. Great video!

    This is the same place I bought my kei truck from. I got a 1987 Suzuki Carry. The owner is a great guy, can't say enough good things about him or the trucks he sells. I got mine titled in NY, used it to do home renovations. Twenty sheets of sheet rock, lumber, furniture, you name it. So handy, so much more useful than my Tacoma for stuff like that.

    • @Codemonkey3

      Donnie Brookins 25 years or older imported as a passenger vehicle you register them as classic vehicles. That’s how it works nationwide as far as I know, you can google Registering Mini Trucks in Florida and see what folks say. I only know about what I and other locals have done with any certainty. Most of the trouble is the DMV not knowing what to do, a problem they have with almost all import vehicles.

As much bed space as 1500 pickup, fold down sides, available with diesel, A/C, power windows, all kinds of goodies, gassers usually 1800-2000CC, some are duallys, fuel sippers.

    Been wondering how to get my hands on one of these trucks. So practical for running around town and work on the farm. When I was a kid my Dad was in USAF. We lived in Far East for many years in the mid ‘60s thru 1972. My dad had one of the grandpas of these trucks. A 3 wheeled Toyota with a little 2 cylinder engine. Drove it to work and all over Okinawa. We had a blast in the thing!

    Used these on a farming apprenticeship in Wilton NH. Great truck, we used it for towing veggies, carrying a bed full of rocks (NH sucks for farming because of rocks), and used it to buy tractor parts. We could do a u-turn on a street that would require a 3 point turn in my 1500. I know I would buy one if I own some land. Easy to work on as well, except the farm had one with a carbonator, with a little bit of studying I learned the system and added the knowledge to my belt hopefully. But I for one am a big fan for these mini trucks.

    Thanks for the detailed review. I don't know why as a large build man (6' 360#) I find these mini pickups (and vans) fascinating. Before mentioned I was thinking "glorified side-by-side/UTV." Not for over the road, maybe a great inner-city delivery truck. The next step up Suzuki Samari ($5k) then Haflinger - Pinzgauer ($10k-$20k). Would not have guessed these trucks held up so well for 75k miles (120,000 kilometers). Agree American brands gave up on not only sub-compacts but even compacts. Think 1964-70 Dodge A100 (2.8 slant 6, 100hp, 3-on-the-tree).

    In the UK we have these including a UK made Bedford rascal van. They were converted into anything you can think of, I was lucky enough to check a very nice caravan (rv in your parts) . The most common are the panel vans, their engines are so high revving and really fun to drive. Must have been one of the first vans I drove helping a family friend doing deliveries for his butchering business. The load these can carry is crazy, for their size. Obviously hauling cement and hardcore in one is a no no.

    We had one of these at one of my first jobs. Can't remember the make or model but it was an excellent little truck. 4x4 high/low with a locker in the rear and a 5 speed. It was a manual transfer case the but locker was electric. It was so convenient for setting CM pheromone puffers in the orchards because it fit down most rows and had plenty of bed space for bulky but lightweight cargo. If I had more land I would have one. They're excellent for little jobs at the fraction of the cost of a side by side and have way more bed space. They're not near as capable off road but they're very practical if payload and bed space are more important than off road capability.

    Namaste, in India there is a whole category of these light trucks starting with TATA ACE. It was primarily made by Tata Motors Limited (now owner of Jaguar- Landrover) to replace finicky 3 wheeler cargo auto rickshaws. Tata Ace has created a new segment and new trucks are priced between 2.25 and 3.35 lakhs INR ( 3200$ to 4800$). Common specs Engine capacity is 1400cc, output 70 hp and it shares engine parts with other TATA passenger vehicles so parts are cheap and its very easy to maintain. These mini trucks are road legal in all Indian staes and only drawback is, they are overloaded many times with inexperienced drivers driving them on already congested Indian roads.

    We need these in the US, better than the ATV’s and golf carts ... in Peachtree city(Georgia), golfcarts are legal to drive on public streets... these mini-trucks would be even better with the closed cab, ac or heat and an actual bed to haul little stuff. Especially if you have a farm or small store.
    I love the way the bed has multiple ways to open from the sides.
    Big truck manufacturers like Ford, Chevy & Dodge would lobby the government into outlawing these gems if anyone tried to sell newer ones. True that they aren’t great on crush tests but so does the mini fiat and smart cars.

    growing up, not quite 40 years ago there was a shop that bought & sold Suzuki trucks, & the little jeep looking ones, he made a trip once a year to buy parts for, and he sold the parts all over the USA, but these old Suzuki trucks were running around everywhere, most had 2 stroke 2 cylinder, a few had 3 cylinders engines, I have no idea what happened to shop, but when I rode by 10ish years ago, it was closed. but always loved them, drove a few, but never owned any

I still want one so bad I can taste it. Lol.

    here in texas you can't make them street legal and that sucks. i friend bought one got it inspected got tags on it drove it everywhere for about 5 months it was a mitsubishi 4x4 right hand drive then one day he got stopped they pulled his plates right there on the side of the road towed his truck. he had hell getting his truck back he took the state to court to get his money back for his tags. it sucked it would run 75 mph got over 50 mpg a/c heat. and 2 days later i got a call my truck was in. i already paid for it so i had to take it but it wasn't a week later i had it sold so i got lucky.

      Aww, that sucks! There are a lot of them over 25 years old registered legally in CT, went through inspection process at DMV ect. . Must have been the newer ones? Has to be over 25 years old to technically be allowed to be registered because of safety standards. You'd think being so efficient they'd allow them here. Has to be as safe as a smart car!

      @@MotoCheez i don't remember the year of the truck but your right and i'm going to check into it. in 2007 is when we had out trucks but i don't think they had that 25 year old or older law back then.

      Yeah. The less than 25 year old are supposed to be 25mph speed limited, like golf cart

      @@MotoCheez i'm going to check into it again and i choice the mitsubishi because it had the highest top speed and it had the sliding steering wheel. flip one level and the wheel and pedals would slid to the left side

      Nice. Didn't know that. Each one seems to have one advantage over the other lol

    I see one of these every day driveing down the highway , it has duelies on the back axle . Don't know what the guy uses it for , but it sure looks cute , and he never has cars lined up behind him , so it must keep up the speed limit ( 100 kph )
