    There were two other screws under the second rubber piece with a similar model. I appreciate you taking the time to make this very informative video.

    Thank you for this excellent video! Following your process worked perfectly and now my laptop has been upgraded from 8 Gb to 24 Gb of RAM. You time and effort and help is greatly appreciated! One thing i did find was that after removing the screws, since i had trouble making the 'plastic pry tool' work on the top side, applying pressure via thumbs to the edge of the back cover allowed it to be removed fairly easily. Thank you again.

    This video (and some Southern Comfort) got me through a nerve-wracking RAM upgrade (I'm a n00b). Some tiny plastic brackets or whatever flew all over the place but the laptop survived and runs a lot faster. Thanks Dale!

    I do the same for my sister’s laptop, but i just lift the rubber, unscrew and put back the rubber, never peel it off. Don’t want that rubber sticking to anything.
    Great video once again!

    Thanks Dale I was able to use this to understand how the cover completely comes off. I did upgrade to 64gb as well and the POST after installing took a little bit longer than I was expecting. The screen did not come on at first, it looked like the display was not working/disabled. Not so, about 5 mins in and it came on. As a side. My battery was 100% empty so had to be plugged in to come on. Thanks again for the video it’s helping us!

    As a side note, if you have an optical drive, there is one extra screw right in the middle in the back that holds the drive in. Just remove it first and slide the drive out before proceeding with the back cover removal.

    I bought the same machine in open box condition for a very low price. I did the same upgrade, but kept the hard drive for storage.
    If you do keep it, but want to boot from the new SSD; you must keep the hard disk disconnected for the first boot. There will be prompts as the cmos gets updated. Afterward, re-attach the hard disk and the machine will continue to boot from the SSD.

      I know it's been 4 months since your comment, but is there really nothing else to it? No cloning the hard drive? Just plug in the ssd, boot it up without the hard drive, then turn it on and boot it again with the hdd in this time? I would really appreciate a response, I attempted to switch them almost a yeat ago but couldn't figure it out so I'm still booting from the hdd. Any help is greated appreciated.

    • @jeffme6891
      @jeffme6891 8 місяців тому

      No, you have to clone the HD BEFORE removing it, and booting from the SSD. You will get a CMOS error, but just continue on since the error is normal.@@GGelatoW

    Warning! This is not the newer 17" 2023 HP Envy. On mine, the foot was not rubber and removing it destroyed it (it didn't come off cleanly) and turned out to be unnecessary as there were no screws. Also, while the M2 drive was easily accessible, the RAM was not visible as it is under a plate.

    These series of laptops, along with the smaller 15.6" screen version, have 2 slots for the DDR4 RAM. Whereas most laptops nowadays with DDR4 have one RAM module soldered to the motherboard and one normal slot (regardless of the brand). This prevents the customer from upgrading the RAM to the highest possible configuration that the CPU is compatible with. For example, instead of being able to install 2 x 32GB = 64GB total, you're stuck with 4/8/16GB soldered + 32GB max in the slot. 8 + 32 is what happened to me with my new Lenovo and therefore 40GB max instead of 64GB max. Most other HP laptops have this stupid configuration as well. Forget DDR5 laptops because pretty much all of them have soldered RAM an NO extra slot. This is the same crap that Apple have been doing for some years now along with soldered SSD chips. They essentially want to prevent you from performing service or upgrades so that you have to eventually throw the computer away and buy a new one prematurely. In essence I suggest grabbing either the 15.6" or 17.3" version from this series, AMD or Intel. I recently purchased the 15.6" version named G9-255. AMD 3150u, 8GB RAM, 512GB M.2 NVME SSD. It even has the compartment for a SATA drive, but the connector and flat cable are not included. I got those for about US$5.00 from AliExpress. I slapped in a 1TB SATA SSD and it works great. Btw, the predecessor model G8 has almost the same configuration.

      Hey Bro, I also have the same laptop and from what I have researched (according to HP itself) it can only be expanded to 16 GB of RAM, I also wanted to expand it to 32 GB, as it is possible because if you enter the command in the CMD Regarding how much memory the system supports, it says it is 32 GB, so it would just be a test.

    I want to do the m.2 portion of this upgrade on a different 17.3 HP laptop (HP 17-cp103cl). This one has an amd processor. There is also a m.2 slot, but there are no drivers on the HP website and other users have indicated that the laptop wouldn't recognize the drive. I am wondering how to verfify that this will work before I purchase the drive, and where drivers can be found.

    I like hard drives. They are good for longer term data storage since flash memory will become corrupt after some time. Even an SSD is prone to this an there are none that I know of that are not. You would not want your only copy of any data to be on any flash memory for 10 years only to come back to it and your files are either gone or corrupt. SSDs are great for speed and they also don't have that nasty habit of becoming unusable if you are a klutz and drop it on the ground. While there is some chance a hard drive may still be OK for a short time period after that you may just want to get your files from it while you still can and distrust it some from that point on.

    Hi Dale, this is a great video. I want to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD in a 17" older HP laptop that I have had since 2014. I don't have the model number right now in front of me, but this one has an external battery in the rear and an optical drive. I removed all exposed screws and started to remove the top from the pan using the method you show, and everything went fine till I tried to pry the rear. It is not coming, so obviously I need to remove something else. There are no hidden screws under the rubber foot, but I am wondering if I need to remove the optical drive, and maybe something else. If you can advise me on this I would be grateful. Thanks!

      @Golfexpertbelieveme 6 місяців тому

      I dont know what the max is. I installed 32GB of RAM and I had a 2TB SSD Stick installed. I couldnt get the Stick to install correctly. There is some stuff that I dont know about with the sytem of this type of computer. I ended up taking it to a small town IT Gal that had to figure it out. She even said it was really weird. Wasnt just a quick and easy reboot and switch to the new SSD. I also left my HD memory in there for my physical memory of files and what not. This computer flies now. All in all it cost me like $300 to upgrade it and that includes paying the IT gal. But I had gotten my RAM and Memory on black friday sale.

      1 stick of 8gb ram means it's single channel which severely hampers graphics performance. If you want light gaming adding ram is a must. Ram is also very cheap these days
