Do you have an amp for the memphis speakers? Or is the amp only for the subs?

Would it be a bad idea to just make a lid module that holds a sub and not worry about a box? I'm pretty unknowledgeable about speakers. I know there are holes in the storage compartment and that's usually not wanted but sometimes are? Idk I'm confused. I do not want to spend $300 on a box.
