    This is another restoration video of our historic house. We saw this historic house for sale that had wonderful stone masonry and was mostly a brick house. The Romanesque architecture was amazing for this cheap house. With the slate roof and the masonry repair we had to do it was a great renovating house. We have to cope with termites damage and termite repair. The stained glass and fireplace mantels were amazing. If you are looking for abandoned historic homes or abandoned places look no further. We don't have any scary stories but a virtual house tour of the Mooreland House aka Mooreland Mansion aka Harrodsburg Castle aka Ashfeld Manor is a great place to follow.
    Our DIY historic preservation videos are not necessarily how to videos. We get a lot of inspiration from some of our favorite channels like Wild Wonderful Off Grid, Pure Living for Life, Onboard Lifestyles, Mike Haduck Masonry and many more. We love our little castle on the hill.

    Wow just wow. The safety element of repairing the tower is the biggest hurdle. I like the rachet strap idea and some external buttressing. If would be nice to repair the middle first without removing every brick and stone above. I like the concrete ring beams you employed in the wall restoration but how to get them in and support the weight above. Challenging but i have seen facades supported with whole building removal - it just took a mountain of steel I am an aerospace engineer and out of my element but i think steel will be in your plan

    You know, the leak in the roof-At timestamp, 4:24 it looks like a little seam where it meets the wall is pulled out- might be an optical illusion. Probably more likely where it's got the wrinkle in the liner. Also I noticed the liner moved when Frank stepped on it.

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  11 місяців тому

      That roof covering is actually supposed to be the base for torch down rubber roofing. There are a few wrinkles in it and some of the thin plastic sheet is free to flop in the breeze. The roof deck is only 1/2 inch plywood so there is some flex in it when stepped on.

    Oh man you have a challenge this almost seams more dangerous than the front wall dormer was. Remember several people have told you that you should never take down the walls just point them lol. I think given the current state of the roof I might just remove it completely as a first step than you are going to have to take down at least 2 floors on 3 sides luckily 2 of them have big windows so that's less brick work. My big worry would be how you support the remaining walls while removing and rebuilding the bad ones. We know what your doing for fun this summer and fall.

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  11 місяців тому

      We don't think the remaining walls are really at any peril. They are solid and 12 inches thick without any cracks or bad mortar. We just picture those old castles that have a single wall standing out in a field for 100 years and they don't fall down. We will find out more though as we start dismantling.

    Question...can you continue to use a form of your current gutter bypass system & reinstall the old box gutter facades... We will have to make that determination once we find out how much of the tower we have to take down. It would make it a lot stronger to figure out a way to pour a band all the way around the tower at some point.

    I kept thinking about the "rubble course" after you told me what it was. It is beautiful. To my mind, I can see where it may have been a good way to use any and all stone pieces. As a craftsman though, it would have been so time consuming to create. For you folks....it seems next to impossible because you have to record where each piece is so it can be returned. How does one do that?? I guess I'll find out!!!!

    I keep thinking about the problem of the tower. If you took the tower down two floors and caped it there with a roof how would the house look? This would take the weight of the bricks and stone off the rest of the floors. By starting there and rebuilding upwards it might prove easier. As you can see I am not a builder just a housekeeper.

    The condition of the tower is questionable enough, that I don’t think I would do very much interior exploration demo. Scary to think that 1x might be currently doing some structural duties as the rest of the wall disintegrates.
    Yes the tower is a beautiful ruin, that needs a total rebuild.

    Definitely Stabilize the tower and possibly buttress, tie and repoint the good walls giving it shear strength because taking out the damaged wall could cause the remaining walls to separate and peal back like a big brick banana..this might sound crazy but you can use a bunch of high capacity ratchet straps which you can wrap around the tower and ratchet tight which will provide butressing stability and will keep the remaining walls from wanting to fall away.... take it slow and be careful...

    • @stevenvail6277
      @stevenvail6277 11 місяців тому +1

      Also, between the straps you can put up sheets of plywood, steel or 2×4s laterally running between the gaps of the horizontal straps staggered the 2x4s which should provide the stability needed especially if you have internal supports. Also, wood will protect the ratchet straps from being damaged by the stone.... just my observation

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  11 місяців тому +1

      Not sure exactly how we are going to do it yet but there will be ratchet straps and lumber involved. You are correct about the remaining tower needing some stability while we take the decayed part down.

    the non interlaced line. interesting information. made me wonder this. warm [sun shine on] side versus cold side.
    is there seam line built into the tower to handle the expansion difference?
    need to do some homework myself. do people use thicker amount of lime mortar to "handle expansion"?
    found few references. Mostly says expansion control depended on sand (within the lime mortar matrix) to handle the expansion (not thicker).
    Few indicating adding bit more sand (seems state less than 1/2 part sand) to normal lime mixture and mortaring the "target" bricks'; creating "expansion wall-stack-lines". They also say strongly forbid non-breathable equivalent materials [aka concrete] over those target bricks.
    so translating my research; is the lime mortar on that suspect area more "rougher" (sand-ier) than remainder of the lime mortar?

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  11 місяців тому

    If the front porch is dried out how come the stones are still discolored ? will it take a bleaching process to make it look like the rest of the façade stones?

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  11 місяців тому

      The water is trapped in the stones by the cement mortar so they never have a chance to dry out. The front portico was rebuilt with cement mortar in the mid 2000s.

    I'm curious as to why someone would ask why do you just walk around looking at things if they knew anything it's that if you don't look you don't find all of the issues and why wouldn't you find all of the issues first instead of constantly making repairs if you don't deal with all issues then there will be a money pit because of one issue that wasn't found and dealt with if I had the cash I would try to tent the whole house then start at the top of the Tower and completely deconstruct all stone work and brick work then put a larger concrete base down for the tower then reconstruct everything

    Frankly I think the entire top of the tower is badly compromised. It looks like part of it could collapse. What is the value of the top anyway? I would take down the top floors to the attic roof level and create a turret style roof that would architecturally look correct. With all the tin facade rusted or rotted away...how to replicate that? You have no heating system or plumbing. Scrap the tower and restore the basic home! Do ever want it finished and live there??❤
