I'm still in love with this little bastard!!! Jarre-sounds/Daft Punk, whatever...this dream-machine changed my life at the time: affordable, high quality, endless features........and so much regrets, having sold it, decades ago!
Arrgh! I've owned many synths over the years, especially Korg and early Roland units, and had 2 flawless Poly 800 II's but I sold them both around a decade ago. Just discovered your channel and now I'll have to look for another 800 II just because I want to install your great patches! Still have a Korg M1 unit and a Korg 01W/FD board which I use (via MIDI) to layer over a Nord Electro 3 Seventy Three keyboard (IMHO Nord has some of the best Hammond B3 and Leslie emulations around.) Anyway, glad I discovered your great channel. Thanks!
Beautifull. It takes a while for me not to search for another one on ebay after hearing your demo. It's not about the synth, it's all about your love and passion embeded in every sound you have created and every note you play. I won't get that from synth. I have to search in myself:) Thanks for greta videos and keep it up!
This is partly true as i also program sounds on many synths, you do need a wild imagination , lots of time initially to understand the architecture of a particular synth. But the synth must be able to create good sounds the processing power needs to be there ,but then the problem is most keyboard players love to just concentrate on chords and scales etc they don’t understand the power in combining playing style with patch making as a player you learn so many different styles depending on the patch type.
I really prefer the Poly 800 II - the envelopes are snappier, but not actually faster than the original. This is because the envelope curves on the model II are logarithmic, whereas they are linear on the original. The difference is astounding. The programmable DDL on the model II has an analog feedback path (unlike newer DSP-based delays) so it sounds warm and a little dirty. Also the II looks much nicer, with its mostly black housing and buttons. Very nice sounding demo, I love your patches.
I just bought and installed these patches and its best I did with this plastic analog synth. It brings a new life to the synth, I recommend it for people like me who are not very into program with buttons , the presets are top quality, very happy with it!
Dude. I love the Korg stuff, these are really nice sounds. For what this is (one of the first affordable poly synths), it was really good. I ended up getting the DW8000 and still have it.
I was fortunate to get access to one of these at college standing in the corner of a music storeroom. I asked politely if I could use it a lunchtimes and they used to lend me the keys. I never really came up with much music but enjoyed experimenting with sound.
Really useful demo! Liked the Jarre parts (the equinoxe and oxygen one too) also the italo disco basses :) (I had this synth I used it for vocodering live on stage - with a digitech vocoder)
I've bought patches from this guy. They are quite good. The ones for the poly800 appear to be high quality also. I really dig his style when it comes to patch creation.
Great demo! (same as all your other demos) From what I've read, the Mk2 is just a Poly 800 w/digital delay. (?) But IMO the Mk2 sounds slightly fatter, creamier, smoother etc, then the Poly 800. I have a Poly 800, but I'm seriously considering getting a Mk2. What I really want & have wanted since the mid/late 80's, is a DW8000, but they're a bit harder to find. Each time 1 comes up on Ebay, I don't have the $ & then when I DO, there are none to be found. Eventually I'll have a Mk2 & DW8000.
In college I played with a guy who had one of these. He said that within months the joystick broke during transport. I guess it needed some sort of protective cover.
My dad used to have one of these. I couldn't play for shit but used to love just holding chords and playing with the joystick. Got Reason with loads of VSTs now but i may track one of these down
Had one many years ago. It's considered a cheesy synth, and the sound palette and modulation capabilities are very limited, but the truth is that is capable of very convincing sounds, expecially pads or delay spiced leads. Basses are reasonably fat and nice too. Good patches here.
Greetings to all, someone who can help me with my korg poly 800, connect a charger, I think it has a lot of voltage and it turned off and does not turn on anymore, what happened? could it be the protective diode at the input? Would the internal card be burned because of that? any trick remedy or solution here?
I don't know, and I'm not sure, however the sound at 04:14 it's very similar to one using at the beginning of the Alphaville's song Forever Young??? well, and also it's a really good demo, Fantastic!
These are incredibly cheap now, so they're a nice choice for someone looking for a decent analog synth. Biggest limitations are the single filter for all voices, the lack of real-time knobs and the lack of velocity or aftertouch on the keyboard. Also, it sounds very thin in 8-voice mode, so most decent patches only give you 4-voice polyphony. Even so, a nice-sounding keyboard if you don't want to use a softsynth.
Sounds miles better than a DX anyway! But for some reason KORG never made THE analog synth that had all the pros of the PolySix, 61 and 800 and none of the cons...would have been a true classic!
Are these sounds i can program myself into the keyboard using the keyboards controls? Or are these samples from something else? Noticed the sounds/riff from one of droid bishop’s songs there in the beginning :)

no, this synth is very basic. Microtuning came along with the fully digital Yamaha DX7II. Only a few analog (and expensive) synths had it before, Prophet-5 REV3 for example.
I have DW-8000 (and used to have Poly 800). DW-8000 has digital oscillators instead of digitally controlled, thus it is hybrid synthesizer, not truly analog (imo without influence on soud quality). is there possibility to convert these presets for ex-800? btw is poly800 mk2 that different with its specs and speed of envelopes against ex-800? would like to buy those and convert it for ex-800 if its possible, great sounds mate!
hi, the Poly/EX-800 does not accept banks from the Poly-800 II. Both instruments sound similar, but different. Some MK2 sounds can be converted, others not.
I think both. The MK II has a built in programmable delay wich can be used as chorus, flanger and delay. Apart from that, the MK II has faster envelopes.
Which are the differences between this one and the Poly-800? I think that the 800II has effect delay, instead the chorus effect of the first version, and that it was updated with SysEx interface, isn´t it? Apart from that, Do they have the same wave forms and parameters? Can they produce the same sounds? Which do you prefer?
+KurtFuller yes, the programmable delay instead the simple chorus, sysex was implemented, more sequencer memory. But also faster envelopes. The basic sound is a bit different, but very similar. I prefer the MK2, but I have both, also the EX-800..
Nice sounding synth but what a bitch to program. I have a friend with one of these and he produced a amazing album with just this one keyboard but it took him forever. Thanks for the great demo I really enjoyed it.

I was told this when they first came out in the 80s by the keyboard guy at "Reliable Music" in Charlotte N.C.. so I didn't buy one..

+David Winchester This is the most vaporwave thing I've ever heard. Congrats on living the dream.
+Alex Hauptmann what's vaporwave?
Hey everybody I got the poly 800ii working but the F keys don't work for some reason. Not sure about the sequencer key either.
Vaporwave is a sad ironic mockery of what some millennials think 80s/90s culture was like. Do not recommend looking into.

Awesome demo. Probably one of the best. Remembers me many french compilation from DJ Jean-Marie K. Cheers from Paris.

How is that bell/marimba sound made at 9:15? I guess oscillators and a resonant filter of different frequencies were used
I see, the Poly 800 has limited additive synthesis capabilities

@AnalogAudio1 the sound at 07:00. Could you make that on a Deepmind 12?
Indeed, I created a similar flute sound on the Deepmind, see my video "Deep Impressions" Soundset
