Quite typical of the Kiwi attitude " she'll be right " the way Kiwi and Jim cantered in at the end to win that race. It was like a casual stroll to victory. The horse didn't even look buggered at the end too really. It was as if the horse had an after thought to win metres out from the finishing line and just burst ahead to win the race for the hell of it in a way. Good horse / good win / good to watch / good jockey / good Taranaki bred horse I believe / good work by Snow and his wife Anne in moulding the horse into being a winner / legends.
You could not make it up. NZ horse wins the Cup and he's called KIWI. It's 36 years on but Im still waiting for an Oz horse called KANGAROO to win the Japan Cup or the Arc de Triomphe.
I think the point of his comment, is a NZ horse, called Kiwi won an Aussie Cup. If you are aware of the rivalry, you'll know this is the epitome of the NZ sports dream, lol :)
Kylie Mackenzie I know, but the premise regarding an Aussie horse winning those cups is wrong since the Melbourne Cup has taken over for nearly two decades as the most prestigous horse racing event in the world, so the irony is that French and Japanese horses are coming here trying to win the Melbourne Cup instead of vice versa. Also NZ horses dominate in Aus anyway, so apart from the name, I'm not sure why this is seen as patriotic for NZ, since the Melbourne Cup alone must have had plenty of NZ horses win anyway???

Came home to Dad's tangi in August '83.Told cuzzie at airport there's a horse coming over for Melbourne Cup & will definitely win but what will really get to the Aussies is his name...KIWI🥝
KIWI was a wonderful horse and yes would more than likely have figured in the finish of the 84 Cup as BLACK KNIGHT , Chagemar and Mapperley Heights were not in his league as a stayer.
