Did Winx ever race in a Melbourne Cup? No. Kingston Town won the Sydney Cup in 1980. He came 2nd in the 1982 Melbourne Cup. And, he had quality opposition. Winx hasn't beaten anything good. Her opposition was something you would see standing out the front of a saloon in a western movie. Kingston was beating horses that had won Melbourne Cups. Great horses beat the best. They don't dodge the contest.

I remember being out with my brother's Sunday league team while they were having a post match drink. I was about 13 or 14 at the time. One of them asked me what music I liked. What I believe makes a champion racehorse is the ability to race in the Melbourne Cup. Winning it is an added bonus. Great horses beat the best. They don't dodge the contest like winx did.

27 years ago today. Two elite racehorses battling out to claim Racing's Australian main event and we've since seen 2 other horses claim both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup the same year. RIP both horses (And Nick Moraitis) ahead of tomorrow's race.
