Increase Your Laptop's GPU Wattage (Updated Guide) - VBIOS Flashing

  • Wouldn't it be nice if all the thin and light gaming laptops could run at the same power as their bigger brothers? Well, you might be able to close the gap with a little tool called NVflash. This is my updated guide for 2024 (and beyond hopefully) for using vbios flashing to increase your GPU's power output for your laptop.
    In the video, I use my Asus Zephyrus G14 to increase its wattage from 125W to 175W, and still maintain respectable temperatures and a nice performance increase, especially given the compact size of this device! But this can work on a ton of different gaming laptops, just do your research and proceed at your own risk!
    My 40 series vbios roms that I've collected are linked below. These include mostly RTX 4070 and 4090 laptops, and also the Scar 16 4080. I will add to this as time goes on: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

    Once you push wattage far enough, the power adaptor will be the limit. When I push my miniled modded m16 2022 cpu+gpu to 55+120w (original 45+100w) on sustain workload, battery would drain slowly. The original 240w ac adaptor couldn't keep up but the problem went away when I use my friend's 330w scar adaptor. Good video as always.

    Hey thanks for the video! Question about the 2024 Zephyrus G16 laptop and the base GPU wattage slider. If you flash your vbios but only have it running at its stock 125W maximum, do the video ports still not work? Do they break from the act of flashing your vbios, or running it at 175W?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  22 дні тому +5

      Correct, the wattage doesn’t affect the ports. The vbios itself does. Only the left side USB-C display out will work on the G16.

    Hey Josh - amazing content as usual. I have the same laptop, G16 4090, what's your config for the GPU? I'm currently using 145+20 Dynamic Boost and getting 19.272 Timespy score with 84C average temps.
    I'm pretty satisfied with these result in games, but just wondering if you have any recommendations to improve further, taking performance and temps into consideration.
    I have a stress test I use in Alan Wake 2 to see how long it can maintain a stable FPS without thermal throttling and this is the sweet spot I found so far.
    Thanks and congrats on the content again.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  22 дні тому +3

      That’s a great sweet spot! I think you’ve almost nailed it. You could increase your overclock, and try different values like 150+5, or 135+20, or 160+5. I’m sure you’ve probably tried different combos, but yeah a simple overclock of like +150 core, +150 memory should also help. Maybe also bring CPU wattage down to 15-25W if it’s fighting for power. But yeah I think you’re in a good spot overall!

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  22 дні тому +1

      Nice!! But yeah setting a temp limit should not cause any issues! If it throttles too much, then just try setting it a little higher. But usually the CPU dynamically adjusts power very well to make sure you lose little to no performance.

    does this increase gaming performance? from the benchmarks i have seen a blade with 4080 outperforms the g16 with 4090 i want to decide between g16 (2024) or a blade 16 (2024) for gaming and university but the tgp and lower performance is holding me back from buying the g16

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  20 днів тому

      If you look at the Legion Pro 7i 4080 model in my gaming benchmarks, that’s exactly what you’d be looking at with the Blade 16 4080. Sometimes it passes it, sometimes it doesn’t. You sometimes get more performance from the Blade mostly because the CPU. But you get more vram with the 4090 which helps in some situations. I would personally pick the G16 because the difference in performance is negligible and you get to enjoy a much lighter and thinner laptop with more tuning controls, less glare on the display, more than double the battery life, better performance on battery, way better speakers, I mean to me it’s not even close.
      I would only pick the Blade if you were getting the 4090 Blade and you were only buying it for maximum fps in games and didn’t care about any other laptop aspects.

  • @Kfr_ehsan

    Bro do you think you can make a video and see how far you can push both the cpu (overclock) and gpu (vbios swap) of the g16? Im thinking of buying one and doing the same but obviously having some guidance would be great.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  6 днів тому +1

      I would if I hadn’t returned it already :( it’s an insane laptop though. I had the GPU at an overclock of +250 core and +300 memory before it started to glitch out a bit. That highly depends on the GPU bin though, so it’ll be different for everyone. CPU can be pushed to like 110W+ but when both are loaded up it won’t be nearly as high, like 50W with maybe 150W GPU or so. It takes some trial and error but it’s a very capable device of providing tons of performance in the actual thinnest 16” gaming laptop you can get.

      One more thing. I disabled turbo bust on my intel i9 14900h on M16 2023 and fps just got a bit higher on every games (RDR2, Cyberpunk, etc) so looks like i9 14900 without turbobust is enough for modern games

      @@Dima-dc5mf interesting. Yeah I think in games it might be okay, it’s just I know Intel is known to have low base clocks so sometimes that can bring things to a crawl but if it’s working well for you then by all means let it ride!

    Is this gonna make 4050 - 60 - 70 run at 140w ? Mine runs on 90w on cyberpunk and it's on like 70 degrees or so (g16 2023 4060) (also cpu is a mess it's at 95 always) also cyberpunk won't take OC which is sad ( i put +280 core clock on it on fh5 and it doesn't even flinch but cyberpunk is not happy with it )

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  21 день тому

      Sounds like Cyberpunk is really pushing your CPU and not your GPU. Are you using DLSS and playing at a resolution lower than QHD? You could try the vbios trick for sure though. Might help!

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  21 день тому

      @@Savi159 yeah that’s why, it’s the 1080p resolution that’s pushing everything from the GPU to CPU. So you might not see any performance increase with a vbios. It would be hard to say, but you can always try it and then flash back if it’s not helping.

      Yep! The CPU typically makes no difference so yes it should work fine

    • @JoshCravesTech

      If your 4060 laptop is at 100W or more already then the gains would be very small unless you’re trying to get every last drop of fps possible

    what about cpu wattage

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  16 днів тому

      CPU wattage is limited by the manufacturer. You can sometimes go beyond their limits with software like UXTU, but it may not work.
