Once you push wattage far enough, the power adaptor will be the limit. When I push my miniled modded m16 2022 cpu+gpu to 55+120w (original 45+100w) on sustain workload, battery would drain slowly. The original 240w ac adaptor couldn't keep up but the problem went away when I use my friend's 330w scar adaptor. Good video as always.
I did the same on my 2021 g14, but the battery still drains. It seems like the laptop thinks it’s still plugged into the stock wattage plug, when it really is plugged into a 330w, what can I do to fix this power drain issue?? Thank you!
Hey Josh! Could you please help with my comment below this one? I got a 330w charger and a 240w charger (both from Asus) and my 2021 G14 recognizes them both as a 180w charger which results in massive battery drain ): Could you please help with this if you get a chance! Thank you (:
I did this just now with my Razer Blade 15 Advanced Edition Mid-2021 refresh model laptop and all I can say is... wow. Literally nothing to lose here, just performance gains all the way, thanks for this tutorial! 🌟
I made a mistake and disabled igpu before doing vbios, so there was no screen. Here is the fix before you freak out, buy an usb c to hdmi adapter and connect your adapter to usb 4 port, and ta-da! You have screen back, then fix the vbios.
@@40_VORTEX try to use usb c to hdmi adapter and see if you get video from an external monitor. I don’t think it will prevent you to get screen connection through the adapter.
Thanks so much for the guide, it actually worked on my RTX mobile workstation GPU and I get better performance in both engineering and gaming applications!
This is honestly excellent content, and I'm really impressed how active you are in the comments! I'm sat on an ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 M6500XV (7940HS, 4060), and I feel like it's power-limiting itself even though the cooling could handle more, so I thought I'd give this a try. I figure the G14/G16 are a fairly close match in hardware. I've followed the instructions but nvflash refuses to play ball. I get the following (even after I ran --protectoff): WARNING: None of the firmware image compatible PCI Device ID's match the PCI Device ID of the adapter. WARNING: Firmware image PCI Subsystem ID (1043.185D) does not match adapter PCI Subsystem ID (1043.3258). Nothing changed! ERROR: GPU PCI Device ID mismatch And that's it, it refuses to apply the bios. Is it (rightly) protecting me from myself while I'm trying to brick my computer?
I assumed it was for my own good and left it alone. After some recent investigation it seems that in the cases where I get unusably low frame rates, it's actually the CPU that's not keeping up rather than the GPU. I think the combined heat dissipation is the real issue here. You can't expect desktop gaming performance, when a typical desktop GPU uses more power (and has more cooling) than the whole laptop computer. It just doesn't make sense (assuming you're not comparing an old desktop with a much newer laptop).
Hey i randomly found this vid.. I have 4060 75watt on my hp victus I tried this trick and boom it goes to 120watt power limit I tried run some game on it and itu Run awesome Big love bro❤❤❤
The thing about the 4000 series Nvidia laptop cards is that the company literally downgraded most the chip dies and didn't tell customers. They tried to reverse time and create the RTX2050 (which had never existed before the 4000 series was almost on the market). That way their new 3050 didn't seem like it just appeared out of nowhere (which it did). Then Nvidia took the the laptop 4060 and downgraded it's chip die to the next one lower. They also did this to the laptop 4070 (which is really a 8gb desktop 4060). When I attempted to upgrade from an ASUS G15 RTX2060 to an ASUS G17 4070... what I found out was that in reality, i was only getting +2gb more VRAM and some more shaders... but otherwise this wasn't much of an upgrade for spending 1,700. And technically the chip die on the 4070 was the same as the 2060 (only newer). Scammers.
is 240 watt adapter even enough for the 175w vbios swap for g16? did you see any battery drain while gaming?, also FINALLY, was waiting for this vid, Awesome guide btw
I didn't personally see battery drain, but I also didn't have it pinned to 175W the whole time while gaming either. I'd say it's worth a shot and then if you notice battery drain then pick up a 280W adapter
Conclusion part is TRULY relevant. Once I started looking for G16 2024 (god, this OLED!) in my country, while having G15 2021, I decided to check if I can do anything in terms of undervolting and overclocking. I currently have around 34 hours in 3DMark Demo and that's 10 times more than the actual gameplay I had for the past week. But gotta say - all of this tuning is really interesting, however in the end - what for if not for playing?
@@johannesdanis2054 nice!! Does actual wattage used go higher than that? Sometimes G-Helper might say one thing but what you actually get in games is another after a vbios flash. Good to know the Razer vbios works. Was it on techpowerup? Would love to add it to my folder
Hey thanks for the video! Question about the 2024 Zephyrus G16 laptop and the base GPU wattage slider. If you flash your vbios but only have it running at its stock 125W maximum, do the video ports still not work? Do they break from the act of flashing your vbios, or running it at 175W?
Just stumbled on to this and glad i did. I wanted to try the NVIDIA driver before flashing the VBIOS but I keep getting a message from the installer saying its not compatible. I'm running the latest windows 11 which is supposed to be compatible according to the NVIDIA driver website. Anyone else have this issue?

Hey Josh - amazing content as usual. I have the same laptop, G16 4090, what's your config for the GPU? I'm currently using 145+20 Dynamic Boost and getting 19.272 Timespy score with 84C average temps. I'm pretty satisfied with these result in games, but just wondering if you have any recommendations to improve further, taking performance and temps into consideration. I have a stress test I use in Alan Wake 2 to see how long it can maintain a stable FPS without thermal throttling and this is the sweet spot I found so far. Thanks and congrats on the content again.
That’s a great sweet spot! I think you’ve almost nailed it. You could increase your overclock, and try different values like 150+5, or 135+20, or 160+5. I’m sure you’ve probably tried different combos, but yeah a simple overclock of like +150 core, +150 memory should also help. Maybe also bring CPU wattage down to 15-25W if it’s fighting for power. But yeah I think you’re in a good spot overall!
@@JoshCravesTech great! Yeah, I have set the overclock to those values from a different video of yours. Thanks for the reply, I'll try those other combinations with less GPU boost and share the results
Will it be worth it to buy the Zephyrus G16 4080 silver model ($2900)?? The silver model costs $200 more, but I'm absolutely in love with this colour. Razer 2023 is $3000 with mini Led. And do you know why that G16 silver model costs $200 more compared to the black one? Any specific reason?
Brilliant as always - Mind reminding me, what are the downsides of flashing the 2024 Zephyrus G16 with the SCAR 18s vbios? IIRC some USB stuff didn't work but don't remember what it was :) Thanks!
Awesome vid. Thanks to your help and guides on reddit and previous videos, I flashed the vbios on my 2024 Zephyrus G16 4080 and the performance increase has been amazing. I even learnt some new tips! Do you think setting a CPU temp limit of 90C in G-helper would cause any issues or reduce performance? thanks!
Nice!! But yeah setting a temp limit should not cause any issues! If it throttles too much, then just try setting it a little higher. But usually the CPU dynamically adjusts power very well to make sure you lose little to no performance.
I'm wondering where I could find the benchmark site where there is a Time Spy Performance comparison with power scaling between the RTX40 series (as well as the older laptop gpus) . I believe it was also shown in the G14 2023 RTX 4090 laptop review video. Thanks in advance.
Awesome vid i just finished bios swapping my 2024 g16 zephyrus rtx 4090 with the scar though for some reason when i turn the wattage up in ghelper to 150+ theres no difference compared to the 125 stock watt. Hopefully you can make a vid to show how to tune it in ghelper
@@Bubbyboyyyy oh that’s weird! Try 135+20 or try 140+15 instead. Sometimes you have to play around with the base wattage and dynamic boost to get it to play well. May also need to turn the CPU wattage down a bit to allow it the headroom it needs for the GPU to boost fully
Hey Josh! I recently ordered the 2024 G14 before stumbling upon your channel. Been absolutely loving all your content so far! Would you say this is worth doing on the 4070 in my model? I’ve heard some reviewers mentioning that it performs like a 4060 but in another video I remember you mentioning the returns aren’t so substantial at 100W+ anyway.
@@thatMorality correct, the gains from going above 100W on the 4070 are so small that it’s not worth the extra temperature/fan noise to gain just a few more fps. My recommendation is just lower the in-game resolution to 1600p or even 1200p and enjoy the extra free performance without running your temps up and it’ll still look great while doing that.
Thanks for the video, it helped definitely helped my Wattage problem! I just wanna ask if its safe to re-enable virtualizaton after I flashed the Vbios
125W by default. It only accesses the extra 10W if you are in Manual mode with GPU TGP slider maxed out or if you use G-Helper and max that slider out there. The nice thing is you don’t need to be in Manual mode for it to work in G-Helper.
That will definitely be something I do as things grow! Really hoping the channel picks up this year. Only 4% of my viewers are actually subscribed and brands aren’t vibing with that, so as of now it hasn’t been very lucrative 🤣🤣🤣
I know, I wish we could copy the slider over! I even tried flashing a 2024 vbios to make it work but no luck. But yes I still run the Scar 16 vbios, but mostly only when I’m heavy into playing demanding single-player games. I’ll occasionally flash back to stock when I’ve been doing lots of multiplayer stuff
i have a RTX 3060 mobile and it has 6GB of vram and two empty slots of vram on the motherboard, the question is can i fill those two slots and download a vbios ?
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. But my question is, if I want to use a power supply with more watts, will it damage the battery? What power source do you recommend? If it damages the battery, what is your solution to solve this problem?
does this increase gaming performance? from the benchmarks i have seen a blade with 4080 outperforms the g16 with 4090 i want to decide between g16 (2024) or a blade 16 (2024) for gaming and university but the tgp and lower performance is holding me back from buying the g16
If you look at the Legion Pro 7i 4080 model in my gaming benchmarks, that’s exactly what you’d be looking at with the Blade 16 4080. Sometimes it passes it, sometimes it doesn’t. You sometimes get more performance from the Blade mostly because the CPU. But you get more vram with the 4090 which helps in some situations. I would personally pick the G16 because the difference in performance is negligible and you get to enjoy a much lighter and thinner laptop with more tuning controls, less glare on the display, more than double the battery life, better performance on battery, way better speakers, I mean to me it’s not even close. I would only pick the Blade if you were getting the 4090 Blade and you were only buying it for maximum fps in games and didn’t care about any other laptop aspects.
I'm just trying to do this, and this is the error in the process of flashing : ERROR: Detecting GPU failed. Nvflash CPU side error Code:2Error Message: Falcon In HALT or STOP state, abort uCode command issuing process. UPDATE: With another bios, it is impossible to use Nvidia G-sync, so keep that in mind if you need it.
Which version of nvflash are you using? You disabled virtualization and core isolation? And did you try Optimus mode instead of Ultimate? Make sure your GPU is not disabled and that it is indeed in Optimus.
@JoshCravesTech Actually, I'm sorry. Everything works fine. It's just me, that I downloaded older version of nvflash somehow. With the latest version, everything works. Thank you for the video and instructions. Maybe someone will check this message and avoid my mistakes
I’d still pick the G16 personally. That Blade has a regular IPS panel. I’ll take a little less performance for a much thinner/lighter laptop with more tuning options, oled display, better speakers, similar build quality, and astronomically better battery life

Bro do you think you can make a video and see how far you can push both the cpu (overclock) and gpu (vbios swap) of the g16? Im thinking of buying one and doing the same but obviously having some guidance would be great.
I would if I hadn’t returned it already :( it’s an insane laptop though. I had the GPU at an overclock of +250 core and +300 memory before it started to glitch out a bit. That highly depends on the GPU bin though, so it’ll be different for everyone. CPU can be pushed to like 110W+ but when both are loaded up it won’t be nearly as high, like 50W with maybe 150W GPU or so. It takes some trial and error but it’s a very capable device of providing tons of performance in the actual thinnest 16” gaming laptop you can get.
@@JoshCravesTech Man I really wish you still had it, this concept I have in mind would have made a baller video. There's no extra optimization needed for the 4080 that you can't do on the 4090. Only the 4060/4070 GPUs are different enough to need different settings.

Yeah you should be safe to use a 140W 4060 laptop vbios. I wouldn't worry about the VRM's, as the GPU die is the same, it's just the limitations put in place by Nvidia that make it run lower. The VRM's should handle the extra wattage as they're designed for. Also all 4060/4070 GPUs have a voltage limit from Nvidia so it won't really go beyond 100-115W anyways.
@@ssmess874 depends on the vbios rom. It varies for all of them. It might try to pin itself to 150w or it might run no different than stock unless you use that driver. Yes, the 4080 G16 with a 175W vbios would see a nice bump in performance. The X16 R2 runs quite hot but it does push the GPU all the way to 175W. Of course it's also much bigger. @@asure6760 the 330W charger should stop any battery discharge from happening so that’s really weird. You can limit your CPU to 15-20W to help lower power consumption. The CPU doesn’t need much wattage to run effectively

The original vbios shouldn't do that unless it's now using more wattage for some reason or the driver got bugged. Try using DDU to uninstall and then clean install the latest driver from Nvidia directly

Thanks so much for the guide, it actually worked on my RTX mobile workstation GPU and I get better performance in both engineering and gaming applications!
What gpu do you have? I have a dell precision 7670 with the rtx a4500. I want to increase the power but none of the vbios I found works.
Awesome informative video, I think this shows that laptops are definitely capable of cooling like 25 watts more than what they are rated as ootb
100%!
This worked perfectly on a 2024 zephyrus g16 4080
What is the performance gain? On a GPU heavy game.
I get the following (even after I ran --protectoff):
WARNING: None of the firmware image compatible PCI Device ID's match the PCI Device ID of the adapter.
WARNING: Firmware image PCI Subsystem ID (1043.185D) does not match adapter PCI Subsystem ID (1043.3258).
Nothing changed!
ERROR: GPU PCI Device ID mismatch
And that's it, it refuses to apply the bios.
I have 4060 75watt on my hp victus
I tried this trick and boom it goes to 120watt power limit

Conclusion part is TRULY relevant. Hey thanks for the video! Question about the 2024 Zephyrus G16 laptop and the base GPU wattage slider. If you flash your vbios but only have it running at its stock 125W maximum, do the video ports still not work? Do they break from the act of flashing your vbios, or running it at 175W?
Correct, the wattage doesn’t affect the ports. The vbios itself does. Only the left side USB-C display out will work on the G16.
Just stumbled on to this and glad i did. I wanted to try the NVIDIA driver before flashing the VBIOS but I keep getting a message from the installer saying its not compatible.

This might be useful in a few years if I need more performance.

Nice!! But yeah setting a temp limit should not cause any issues! If it throttles too much, then just try setting it a little higher. But usually the CPU dynamically adjusts power very well to make sure you lose little to no performance.
You have a typo in your save command. It uses 2 hifens.
I'm wondering where I could find the benchmark site where there is a Time Spy Performance comparison with power scaling between the RTX40 series (as well as the older laptop gpus) . I believe it was also shown in the G14 2023 RTX 4090 laptop review video. Thanks in advance.

@@thatMorality correct, the gains from going above 100W on the 4070 are so small that it’s not worth the extra temperature/fan noise to gain just a few more fps. @@ikene3375 yes, you can!
My another question, Zephyrus G16 4080 is 115W or 125W?
125W by default. It only accesses the extra 10W if you are in Manual mode with GPU TGP slider maxed out or if you use G-Helper and max that slider out there. The nice thing is you don’t need to be in Manual mode for it to work in G-Helper.

Hi, any chance to have a comparison on linux videos ?
Bro i have a question. That is my acer predator Helios 16 has a 4060 of 140w but only reaches 98w-102w maximum in almost all the games. Will this vbios trick work on this kind of situation where the gpu is of 140w but stuck at 100watts. Or should i just try the magic Nvidia driver mentioned above.
Try the Nvidia driver first! But yeah a vbios swap might also work because it could change the behavior of how often your GPU boosts.

@@alex8642b did you try making the backup through nvflash instead?
Hadn't been that far into it (haven't opened nvflash). Saved the files for future possibilities. Right now, I just don't see the need for that extra performance at the cost of the hdmi port. Maybe a better vbios will come that doesn't mess up some functionality, or ill run into a game that doesn't quite run well enough, and then I'll give it a go. Thx for letting me know though. Have you got any good recommendations for where i could get g16 wattage boost guides for the 2024 g16 4080 version. I only ever see these videos for 4090's
Are you looking for a 4080 vbios? I have one in the link in the description. But yeah the 4080 is almost identical to the 4090, so you can follow this verbatim if you want. There's no extra optimization needed for the 4080 that you can't do on the 4090. Only the 4060/4070 GPUs are different enough to need different settings.
Hey, can we enable virtualisation later? thanks for the awesome video,i also cant find a vbios for 4050 laptop gpu asus. rog strix g16 40506gb g1614ju btw.. THANKS!!
Yep, should work enabling it afterwards! If I find a 4050 one I'll upload!
Hey, you recently uploaded two Alienware vBios. Are they usable with a 2023 Asus G14 and do both USB-C Ports and HDMI Port still work then?
@@Gebirgskuchen idk about G14 but I know they work with the G16 with all ports still active. Probably the best vbios so far from what I’m hearing from the people who sent them to me!

@@Gebirgskuchen not sure. Have you tried disabling cpu boost? That should still get you about around 10,000 points or so without any noticeable loss in performance. Another thing could be maybe set a CPU wattage limit of around 25w SPL and 40w sPPT/fPPT so it’s not boosting all the time

Hi Josh! I want to buy a zenbook pro 14 duo 13900H 4060...I heard it uses 80 watts for the GPU...But it's a thin notebook... Sooo I would obviously buy a better adapter then the original 180W one...Would I be able to get a Vbios swap with undervolt to give the laptop atleast the performance of a normal 140W 4060 laptop? What are your recommendations? Aaand do I have to get scared of hurting it's VRMs? Would an undervolt save them? Is it safe?😐
@@JoshCravesTech Thank you for your reply! 😀
I'm trying to refresh my g14 4080 vbios to 150w, So I just wondering will the gpu wattage rise if i don‘’t set nvidia driver back to 528.49?
@@ssmess874 depends on the vbios rom. It varies for all of them. It might try to pin itself to 150w or it might run no different than stock unless you use that driver. I know the 175w Scar vbios will always try to boost as high as possible though. I typically use that one and just use the clock limiter in G-Helper to tame it
Quick question, judging by the name of the app, isn't this limited to NVIDIA GPU laptops?
Correct, Nvidia only. Sorry for not specifying!
So, G16 2024, 4090. Swapped the bios. But my GPU power slider in Ghelper is still at max 105w. What am i doing wrong?
@@BravoNorris what does Nvidia control panel say? 175W? If so, you may need to edit the config file in G-Helper if for some reason it isn’t detecting the change. There’s a tab on the GitHub page for how to do that.

So i just thought maybe decreasing the power limit is the solution but afterburner doesnt allow that. What can i do to unlock power limit on afterburner? Also may i use the program you used in this video?
Someone said maybe adapter is the problem but no, gpu is taking the wattage it wants, thermal ratios around 70-75 and 80 max on idle. I dont know if i can flash a vbios of 1660ti pc version.
Can you compare the GPU performance on the 4080 g16 when you give it more power in games like cyberpunk?
The 2024 g16 4080 does not perform as good as the alienware x16 r2 so I was wondering if this the wattage could level it out :)
Yes, the 4080 G16 with a 175W vbios would see a nice bump in performance. The X16 R2 runs quite hot but it does push the GPU all the way to 175W. Of course it's also much bigger. Almost looks like an 18" laptop when it's sitting next to the G16. But yeah you can definitely close that gap with a vbios swap.
@@JoshCravesTechHey sorry to bother you again but is there any chance you can show results?
I tried looking to see if you compared fps in games in your videos but I can't seem to find it.
Thanks again!
@@aMMMMungus the only major test I really did was Time Spy which raised the GPU score from 18,000 to 20,500, so about a 14% increase there. And then Cyberpunk I think it’s RT Ultra went from 60 fps to 67 fps, so about a 12% increase. That’s what you’d be looking at typically, about 10-15% more fps depending on the game. Which aligns almost perfectly with the wattage scaling of these GPU’s, ignoring any gains from higher powered CPU’s.
I downloaded the nvidia app on my legion 7 and installed their driver in place of the manufacture one. I just recently looked at system info in the control panel and it says max power 140 watts but I when I play a game I only get 80-85 watts. Am I doing something wrong?
@@sluhn3 is it the 2024 model? Because there’s an Nvidia voltage limit that doesn’t allow 4060/4070 laptops to really surpass 100w, especially if the game is CPU intensive

@@sluhn3 nah, if you already have a 140W GPU, then there’s nothing you can do to boost it more. Some games like CyberPunk 2077 or Alan Wake, high visual stuff like that might make it hit 115W or so, but that’s about the most you’ll see. 50w seems super low though, so I’d definitely check your thermals just in case it’s bad thermal paste application from the factory!
