    I've done this mod with my desktop GPU, a Gigabyte GTX1070 and it went from the original 190W to 250W, I put a more aggressive curve to my fans to keep the temperatures under 75°C all the time and put good quality Artic thermal pads on the mosfets and coils to avoid overheating them, remember, with this mod the graphics chip won't suffer, the mosfets will, and all we know what happens when a mosfet gets shorted, so take care of the heat and there is very low risk in doing this mod, I have it running like this for the past 5 years without problems and I play over 6hrs a day with the GPU at 100%, 240-250w.

      Very interesting 😮. For me I can't do the because of the temperature problem I have a Gigabyte Aorus 15G XC with i7 10780H RTX3070. Temps with gaming mode from gigabyte center app are reaching 91° - 93°. And I did the cleaning and putting MX-4 past, what I have after that is a shutdown in full power 😂, my adapter is not anough for this laptop so it shut off in full power draw... Well, next I will try to fix the temperature problem, after that I need a new power adapter for it and try again.

      @@doublesnake18 Yeah, on laptops you can't go too crazy, but I doubt the problem is the power adapter, if the battery is fully charged and you don't have a ton of peripherals connected to the USB ports, it should be enough for a mod like this, and if it was the power adapter you will hear a clicking noise on the power brick and the laptop should stay on battery if fully charged, but yeah 93°C is too much, so my guess is that is shutting off by thermal protection, if you use it like that it will burn in a short amount of time. A few weeks ago the channel "Electronics Repair School" reviewed a laptop cooler that is made to do this, is probably a bit overkill, it cost $100 USD but your temps will stay cool and you will have laptop for many years if you clean it frequently.

    I'm having this EXACT problem with my Scar 16 4090. I have all the thermal headroom, but the power limit keeps throttling and getting in the way of the card's full benefits. Googling everywhere, rarely did anyone address this issue as directly as you did. This video explained everything I needed to know, and confirmed what I needed to know. Thank you very much for taking the time to not only explain, but show what you did to resolve the issue. I very much appreciate it!

    I wanted that information 5 years ago. I made two Alienware laptops watercooled. The M18x R2 with 2x GTX 980m in SLI. I was a beast!!! I would overclock the CPU from 3.8 GHz to 4.9GHz but I would need to connect two 330w PSU's to power it. Sadly when overclocking the GPUs too the CPU would start to throttle up and down from 4.9 Ghz to 1.8 Ghz.
    Then I did the same project with a alienware M17x r4.
    It had a gtx 1070 i bios modded from 150w power limit to 280w powerlimit.
    It was insane when I overclocked it!!!
    Also this time I used a little bit better CPU but even with an unlocked bios like I had on the M18x, you couldn't raise the CPU current limit, the option was there but didn't do anything. I could only overclock it to 4.3Ghz.
    I should mention I pushed the other CPU to 5.0 ghz once but it was unstable. Later when cleaning the CPU i noticed one of the CPU pins and the same with the socket has become black. 😅 It still works fine even today but is running without water cooling and a slight overclock.
    The GTX 980m both died because of bad memories since they weren't watercooled.
    The GTX 1070 also had dead memory because I ran it without water cooling some times and even though the temperature on the core was fine the memory didn't got enough cooling when running on air.

    Interesting video. I have a gaming laptop with a nvidia 3080ti in it. Its a 14inch gaming laptop and it has a 100watts GPU limit on it. I was about to do this mod but fortunately I found an easier way and much safer way to increase GPU with out disassembling anything. I re flashed the VBIOS with a higher 3080ti gpu wattage (from 100watts to 140watts). It only took 3 minutes to do using nvflash in the CMD line.
    My gaming laptop Razer blade 14 nvidia 3080ti 100watts
    I used the vbios from a Razer 16 nvidia 3080ti 140watts.
    I can also use three vbios from a razer 18 nvidia 3080ti 165 watts BUT my 14 inch cooling solution can handle that much power. Had to limit it to 140watts using cooling pad.

    Very intersting. I have seen doing this in graphics cards for hardcore overclocking, but never thought about it in a laptop.
    A few comments that you probably have already discussed and addressed, but just in case:
    - I will always prefer to try to rise the limit in software and firmware first. Very rarely that can be done in soft in a laptop, but trying is cheap, afterburner or a similar tool can do. If not, sometimes certain BIOS or graphic card alone firmware, might help. In my own alienware for example very early BIOS alowed undervolting, but that was later locked in BIOS upgrades. Sadly current GPUs cannot be flashed easily, but for old ones tweaking a new firmware was just fantastic, being able to extend the clocks, voltage and power ranges and limits.
    - side topics: undervolting the GPU is nowadays probably the most simple and efficient way to improve performance. Specially with the stock current limit value. In current GPUs this just keeps the clocks high and if the bios allows it, to rise them significantly even whith the stock power limit.
    - cooling mechanical pressure over the dies: this is fun: my particular alienware, an old 13R3 was a disaster even when liquid metal. Some cores in the CPU were clearly hotter than others, an I suspected the GPU pressure was also uneven. I mounted some foam pads over the contact areas, applying pressure from the laptop chasis pushing the heatsing into the cores, and oh boy that worked, the temps dropped over 10º.
    This was a design error of that particular model, but I would suggest checking if some work can be done there, specially if the mounting spots for the heatsing does not look solid or evently distribuited and temps don´t drop as expected after servicing or with liquid metal.
    As always, a very interesting video. Thanks!

    It's also good to remember that not every gpu will benefit from shoving more power into it.
    Take the 4060 for example, the gpu will not perform noticeably better after 90w, no matter the wattage

    Insightful video, so not everything is software tweak or bios mod, you can also do it straight into the hardware. I could add a switch instead on those resistors so I if don’t feel like pushing the laptop to the limit or if I am going to travel and I don’t carry that cooling pad I can just cut that calibrated wire. Great video.

    1st is the thermal limit , 2nd is power limit and 3rd is the reliability voltage limit - if chip does not have sufficient voltage it will not raise clock higher , if you are lucky and your laptop gpu reliability voltage limit is high then it will work

    Thanks for this video, that was truly informative. As you may know, with 40 mobile series they've been heavily restricted when it comes to voltage limit. So limited that in fact it would draw 30-40watss less than advertised number. Is there any way we could bypass the voltage limit in order to achieve maximum supported TGP?

  • @Holycurative9610
    @Holycurative9610 6 місяців тому +5

    I would be very careful when removing power limits on things like laptop GPU's. They are designed to run at a certain wattage, my laptop 3070 tops out at 140W, removing the current limits will shorten the life of your GPU or CPU. You can always over-volt or overclock your hardware but again be careful because as Sorin says "A lot of things can go wrong."

    • @relariis_the_paradox
      @relariis_the_paradox 3 місяці тому

      Be careful, yes. However, I would like to point out that most laptop GPUs are designed to power throttle well below their actual designated/specified wattage limits. This is usually a little less true with big bulky workstation laptops, but anything that's mid sized or thin n light sized with a dGPU is likely to have something that is rated for 45-60w but be capped at 15-30w. Running a power closer to that isn't likely to damage the GPU unless there is insufficient cooling

    On some laptops you have too much power anyway because of weak cooling. On some (I checked only two that I have had) Lenovo Thinkpads with Intel CPU and integrated GPU cooling only touches CPU die, for GPU it looks like cooper panel specifically cut to avoid contact. I think if there was some way to ad-hoc some more thermal mass to the system it would be much cooler. Too bad laptops are aiming to be so skinny for not so much reason really.

    • @rogo7330
      @rogo7330 6 місяців тому

      And by the way, you can play games on integrated GPUs. Mine not even that good and modern though it is 2018 CPU+GPU, but my real limit is thermal issues, not performance.

      @DespiseGaming 5 місяців тому

      "Doesn’t look any different to me, Board and GPU power draw was 160w before mod"
      That's actually why this mod works. The reason shunt modding (because that's what this type of mod is technically known as) works is because you're changing the resistance of the power delivery circuit for the GPU but the VRM controller sees this resistor value as being a fixed and static value that isn't supposed to change and it will report it as such even though in reality more current is being drawn.
