Even though Aesop Rock is a highly lyrical artist, I feel like people tend to view that as the only appealing thing about him. As if he's impossible to enjoy unless you spend hours deciphering his words. That stuff is great and a huge part of his music for sure, but there are times when I completely ignore the lyrics just to enjoy what's going on in terms of sound and composition. His production, flow, and voice are always fantastic. He's also way catchier than people give him credit for.

    • @Janzer_

Correct. The are levels artists paint for a reason. A voice is just another instrument.

Ive never sat there and read his lyrics in the many years i’ve listened to aesop. I probably only understand the meaning of about 20% of his lyrics in his whole discography. first and foremost i love the production, his flow, word play, scratches etc. My thought process is i’ll get them when i get them I’m cool with being in the dark because the music sounds so fucking good its self

Blood Sandwich plucks the same heartstrings as Ruby 81 but has the added bonus of being infinitely more personal. I don't even have brothers and it makes me sentimental. Aes is real as fuck.

I think what makes "Kirby" such a fun song to listen to is that it caps off what is really a three-song story arc that starts with "Get Out the Car." In GOtC, Aes looks back on the passing of his friend and and reflects on the process of grief that has come with it, which transitions to "Shrunk" where he's trying to process these things with a professional and reflecting on the intensity of that process. "Kirby" ties everything up together, but only in the very last line where the shrink recommends he gets a kitten. Note that Kirby is also sung entirely in the present tense, compared to the previous two tracks, which are far more reflective.

I listened to this album for the first time in full while tripping, and ended up totally misunderstanding a lot of what he was saying, especially towards the end where I ended up getting the idea that aesop had a brother that was neglected/abused and eventually died. Especially the last track, with the really violent chorus, and the ending lyric "New york in the rear view then peel, out til he found new york in a windshield". I thought this brother was the "impossible kid" that wasn't meant to exist, and eventually ended up as a drifter/hobo in new york, finally getting hit by a car in.
Of course it's insane to me now in hindsight, but at the time it made perfect sense. Aesop's imagery is so esoteric and abstract that you could really take it anywhere depending on where yourself are coming from, and that's pretty amazing.

Long time Aesop fan here. First off, love the review. Just stumbled upon your channel by chance and had to sub based upon this alone.
I recently decided to pour back over some of Aesop's past work and realized that I had somehow missed the trio of EPs he did with HB Sandman. I had heard one or two songs when the first EP was released but it didn't do much for me at that time so I apparently forgot all about them. After listening to all of them multiple times over the last week I still can't get enough of them. I'd love to see them do another installment. If anyone else missed them like I did stop reading this and go listen to them.

This is the best album of 2016 so far, and I cannot fathom a contender showing up in the next seven months to topple it. Great review for a great album. Thank you for taking your time, Myke. Well articulated review myke! definitely helped me flesh out a lot of my thoughts on this album. Hey Myke, great review. Aesop has been in my top 5 ever since the first few months of me getting into underground hip-hop back in early 2012, and I remember being so excited and loving Skelethon when it came out. Then DEHH put out a review for Skelethon and you all seemed to love it, especially you and Beezy so I'm surprised that this didn't at least get a duo review with Beezy, but anyways. I agree, I love this album. I'm really surprised at how different the production has become, I mean the difference of Bazooka Tooth and Skelethon made sense because they were released 9 years apart and made in extremely different settings. While I still hear some inklings of Skelethon's production style seep through here, this is mostly a completely fresh and new sound we are getting here on The Impossible Kid. Aesop Rock always manages to make his albums sound different and be unique. I'm LOVING this album, I agree the production is super cool (I probably prefer it over Skelethon production but that's kind of a tough call) I think in general The Impossible Kid is just more fun, a brighter and easier album to listen to than Skelethon. I love Skelethon, but it is also 15 tracks and is more like 55 minutes and while I disagree that all the beats sound a-like on there I will say the songs blur a bit more than they probably should, even though I love that album! But I can foresee myself like The Impossible Kid more, it is just so much fun. The thing about Aesop Rock albums is he manages to make such different sounding albums but whether you got back to 1997 Music for Earthworms or 2016 The Impossible Kid, I struggle to clearly decide which albums are better. Aesop is so consistent with his album's level of quality because he always comes with the nicest lyricism and crazy flows over unique dope-ass beats. But focusing on The Impossible Kid, a good example of a crazy beat is "Lazy Eye" I love that guitar, it makes me feel like I'm creeping through the school in the game Bully at night because the music in that game at those occasions reminds me so much of that guitar, and the song is just fuggin good. I'm not sure what my least favorite track could possibly be, but I disagree with your choice of "Kirby" because I love that song and think it is crazy how well it follows up "Shrunk." This album is just filled from top to bottom with quality ass songs. I foresee it being a contender for AOTY, if not at least in my Top 5 of this year. I can't imagine The Impossible Kid even falling below top 2 of this year but of course there is so much more to listen to.
Alright, I'll stop rambling. Great review! Just surprised at all the things becoming solos these days, like this and how Every Hero Needs a Villain didn't even get a review when it was so much better than the first Czarface album, but the first Czarface album got a whole DEHH review. You solo reviewing this is expected, but after DEHH's glowing review of Skelethon and all the fans clamoring for a review of Aesop's new album. Iunno, I just figured that at the very least this would be with Beezy because Beezy made it clear he is a big Aesop Rock fan in the last review. But your solo reviews are great either way, this was a killer review, keep it up!

Aesop is a beast...true lyricist and extremely analytical intellect, goes from literary prose to poetical pose deeper meanings with life, existence, when others think its a skeem.."they will chop you down just to count your rings". i thought he was referring to the rings of a chopped tree when looking down on the stump the rings tell the age of the tree x's a hundred and metaphorically refer to it as time passed in passive existence with little to no relevance vs active existence existence with relevance in an irrelevant world still having no relevance.. both are trapped in a planet in which in which the planet doesn't need neither tree to exist independently. Kirby is fucking funny as hell beat is tight too....Its a dope!

Aesop Rock is a rapper with all the fucking potential in the world. If you heard Sick Friend, you'd know it packs depth. It's well-penned, creative, emotionally resonant on a level a lot of writers couldn't think of, but it still lacks the cohesion and structure that makes records post-2001 of his, wonderful.
Even after I heard "No Regrets" (2001) the album Labor Days left me sour because he was just trying too hard to be different and only connecting half the time and Bazooka Tooth was just all over the place and pretentious as fuck. But that changed when None Shall Pass dropped - he had excellent production (fuzzy guitar lines and great synthesizers he used again on The Impossible Kid), cutting concepts (allusions to Plato, societal structures, personal issues, and etc.) and the structure of songs like "Coffee" and "None Shall Pass" make them easier to digest but still hard to fully grasp. And at album length that can hurt your product.
After Skelethon dropped, while the hooks were fucking trash and the structure took a step back, his production improved and was as good as the beats on None Shall Pass, maintaining similar musical structure - he still honed in on a particular string of concepts like loneliness and just a bunch of personal anecdotes. And I loved that - I love the personal content. It's easier to digest and relate to (like the best of all poetry).
The Impossible Kid is just that-shows a guy could really have it both ways if he wanted and tried - he goes it alone on the production and aces it with perfect influence-incorporation (Psych Rock mainly), focused concepts (Blood Sandwich, Kirby, Rings, Get ouf of the Car, Dorks, Lazy Eye), EXCELLENT structure (Rings, Blood Sandwich, and Kirby) AND every piece coheres into a larger framework. It shows, again, someone with a great vision and a lot of technical skill could have it both ways if he really wanted. To me it's a pinnacle of Abstract Hip Hop and has the most replay value of anything in his discography (the singles especially) and any abstract work of the last 15 years, dare I say.
    The best album of 2016.
    A.

To me it feels like Kirby is about coming back from the darkness of loss. If you notice the song is simple and harmonic, the lyrics are upbeat including the line about how it's more than just an MD recommended sense of purpose. As if the cat was helping him remove the shackles of depression. It seems like he was feeling relieved. From the loss of a friend to finally come back to the world, where it was like a breath of fresh air. But whatever it is I just know I love this man's art.

Finally a review touching base on the strong content on this albums storyline. Surprised Myke didn't mention the shrink advising he get a kitten and how the kitten symbolizes the ups and downs Aes goes through. Along w/ the rabies virus which turns Aes from owner to being at the mercy of the cats and other wild animals. (Oh and the Sasquatch tape buried beneath the concrete metaphor was slick) this album is SUPER accessible imo. Aes doesn't waste a single line with overtly verbose verbiage. I'm sounding like a jackass right?
    Nuff said.. Stay TUFF Myke

It's still a good listen and the style of production is almost like skelethon but I appreciate that album more now. The tracks here for me don't always have my interest to replay them.

Just like Skelethon I didn't dig this at first.. I didn't like the voice he uses on this shit and the beats seemed kinda basic to me but now after listening I fuckin'g love this album.. This is his most personal album I think.. most these songs I can actually tell what hes talking about.. And its all shit I can relate to .. love it... dope.

Funny, I also didn't care for Kirby. My son says it's his favorite. But we both agree that Super Cell is insanely dope. Thanks for the review!
