I never really listened to any interviews of Aesop, and I did not expect his "normal conversation" voice, to be so.. Normal.. His rap voice, I think, is THE shit.
@Noah DeFederico u should stop listening to Aesop the boring bot and start listening to Redman, Nas, Jay Z, Drake, Treach if you truly understand Hip Hop. Aesop is just a boring backpack nerd that makes boring rap. He has a boring personality.
Bazooka tooth and Float were the first albums I heard from Aesop. I remember thinking "holy shit, this guy gets it. "; prior to hearing Ace I felt pretty isolated as a writer, having very little to relate to aside from maybe the Beat writers like Kerouac and Burroughs.... But only because I share their philosophy when it comes to writing.. Not stylistically similar though. Ian Matthias Bavits (Aesop) sounds ridiculously similar to the style I developed in highschool, years before I listened to rap at all, let alone even heard of the Def Jux dudes like Aesop.. Which is crazy mostly because my style is idiosyncratic to a fault... Too similar.. Especially since neither of us are influenced by the other (obviously).. Yup....

I fucking LOVE bazooka tooth like seriously when I'm playing Aesop songs I find myself playing a lot of tracks from bazooka from my playlist more than some other albums. I fucking love the tracks Superfluke, Freeze, Babies with guns, the greatest pacman victory. I love the kinda dirty raw I guess you would call it sound that the album has.. its almost like a lofi sound.

When these two finish their rap careers (hopefully never), they need to do interviews like this with other rappers. Could listen to Aes and OME forever.
What I like about Aesop the most is he’s the manifestation of an artist that’s open for interpretation some songs he makes you really get the message and others are so abstract there’s no point trying to pin it to one spot.

Yo I've been asking Aes and El-P why the fuck they don't talk or do tracks together anymore for years. Can't get an answer either way. One of the biggest mysteries of my entire life.
From what I’ve gathered, it’s about how one handle Camu’s death vs how the other did, I think El-P wanted to release a tribute album and do shows off it and Aes just kinda wanted to mourn his friend. I could be wrong.
I’d love to get my hands on the 4 song cassette AES mentions that he released prior to ‘music for earthworms’. Anyone know if this is kicking around online somewhere?
I’ve looked up quite a bit about Aesop and that’s sorta my hobby for rap is getting into peoples heads about where they’ve been and what influences at what point ect… Aesop is the producer for most of is projects he has a lot of who play instruments who he sources sounds from but for the most part he is the main producer. A project like Impossible Kid listed about 3-4 executive producers as well so he has a lot of help. But Blockhead didnt a lotttt of the work for Float.
ooooh shit, DOOMrock would be an album I'd pre-order, buy the collectors edition etc. Aes and DOOM are both my favourites, next to Sadistik, honestly likely a joint 1st due to different styles, but Aes and DOOM would be the most badass combo of rhymers.
I'm kinda skeptical that Aes has an anxiety or depression disorder. I'd wager that it's probably ADHD. One cardinal sign is the reported failure of various different antidepressant medications that never seemed to enhance one's sense of well-being. Hope you can find some relief, Aesop! Keep making your amazing music 😎
Great interview :) I love how you gave him time to really figure out how to put his thoughts into words. I liked how organic this felt, and was great to hear the mind of such a wonderful artist. Thanks
