J. Rockett Archer: sweetwater.sjv.io/KjzOXv
The mythical Klon Centaur is a favorite overdrive pedal for many legendary guitar players (John Mayer, being one of them). But I can assume that very few of us would ever be willing to spend the exorbitant sums of money required to acquire an original. Thankfully, there are many excellent Klon clones (commonly reffered to as "Klones") out there from reputable pedal manufacturers. In this video, I'll compare my trusty J. Rockett Archer, a boutique ~$200 Klone, with the affordable Joyo Tauren ($50), which might just be the best Klon clone for under $100. Both overdrive pedals aim to achieve the same tone, but have their own unique characteristics. If you have any questions, be sure to leave them in the comments below!

Brilliant review/comparison. This how is it should be done. Thanks for the work that went into this.
Literally identical. No reason to pay more than the Tauren. Plus the build quality on the current Joyo lines are phenomenal. Claiming anything else is just snobbery.
plenty of great tones in both pedals, thanks for the review
Your shootouts are the best. Hands-down. Also these Joyo's are incredible! The Taichi, The King of Kings, and the Tauren sound great
I thought through the amp that they were nearly indistinguishable from each other at all settings. Interestingly, through The Dream the Joyo sounded fuller/fatter while the J Rocket was thinner. Fascinating!
Literally ordering the Tauren right now.
I like it. It sounds great. Personally, I like clones. I am glad people take technology and make it affordable. If you find something that really matters you can invest in that original when it works for you. I had a friend that always shops the local expensive stores and wouldn't use the big box stores or Amazon for deals. I get keeping the local business guy in business but sometimes you just have to save money.
Totally agree!
By technology you mean slave labor and wage controls - yeah “technology.”
Hi Andy. Thanks for the shoot out.
I've listened through my Senn HD 650 and honestly, I can't hear qyite any difference between the pedals. They are very, very close.
So $200 vs $50, I've made up my mind...
Got my tauren!
Nice! Hope you enjoy it
Litlle more presence on Archer but with the tone knob(back) sounds the same
In the video the Joyo was not quite as crisp as the J Rocket. It was more noticeable through the amp simulator. The difference was minimal though and it could have been simply a slight difference in tone pot values. Also as you mentioned UA-cam does some compressing of sound so listening through my computer or my phone is not close to accurate. Your testing method and demo was very good though. I would like to see you talk about your impressions and conclusions between the two from the guy sitting in the room with the amp.
Agreed. Archer was a bit crisper. Tauren seemed to clip it a bit harder or compress it or both
My snobery would stop me buying the joyo - maybe I'll get one and black out the chassis lol
It's funny how much we all care about the way our pedalboards look haha. I do think Joyo has done a decent job with the design though 😅
I like the Joyo Tauren better, it has a little more bite and warmth... at least to my worn out ears...
Joyo are great pedals for the beginner through intermediate players. The only downside to Joyo is the switches wear out, and they have a higher noise floor than might be desired. But in a boost situation they work out good. I have a Joyo Americana as a boost, I don't use it too much, and have a backup one in my to go bag. They are not suited for heavy touring, but they are a winner for most cases.
