I and Akshay Deshpande embarked on a serene exploration of Kerala's backwaters aboard the Vega-2 tourist boat operated by the Kerala State Water Transport Department. Our journey began in Alleppey after arriving on the Vande Bharat Express the previous day and resting at Zostel Alleppey overnight. Early the next morning, we headed to the Alleppey SWTD Boat Jetty via auto rickshaw, where Vega-2 awaited us.
Boarding at 10 am, we explored the boat's interiors, which included a spacious front viewing section and a separate back balcony. At 11:30 am, the boat set sail, navigating through Punnamada Lake, Vembanad backwaters, and various scenic spots like Pathiramanal Island and Kumarakom, before returning to Alleppey by 4:30 pm. With options of both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned compartments, and a brief stop at Pathiramanal Island for refreshments, our journey on Vega-2 offered a perfect blend of comfort and exploration amidst Kerala's picturesque waterways.
The fare structure for the Vega-2 tourist boat from the State Water Transport Department (SWTD) in Kerala is as follows:
Non-AC Compartment: ₹400 per person
AC Compartment: ₹600 per person
Food costs ₹100 per person, which is not included in the ticket price. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food options are available at the same price.
