I want one. So bad. I just bought a new Reverb Twin 200 watt Fender composite amp waiting for me in USA once I can get back after Corona and I have a JCM 50 watt running through a 4x12 Orange stack at my home here in Colombia. I am ready to turn it up to 11.
Owned one of the these for a year. I was lucky to get it 2nd hand for around $325.00 delivered to my door. Really a well built instrument. I loved everything about it except the string spacing at the bridge. Tough for finger picking or using a single finger to play melody lines. It really is set up to be played with a pick. But it can do pretty anything an electric guitar can do tonally. Tons of fun.
The thing I find usually wrong with uke's made to look like electric guitars is that some element or other (e.g., the headstock) is not in proportion with the rest of the instrument. This is all perfectly proportioned aesthetically. It's not - trying - to be something else. It just is, and well done. I think after one's mastered a certain level of proficiency with a regular ukulele, this would be the obvious progression. Cuz you want to have fun, more options, more things you can do, etc. Thanks, Barry, for another brilliant review!
Fun indeed! You would be the focal point of the band with that bauble. If one plays a Les Paul, she noodles mostly above the fifth fret anyway . . . so why not. I have the Risa Uke-Solid Tenor which played through a guitar tube amp can sound loud, down and dirty as well and with nylon strings. I noticed you reviewed the concert version a while back. Tis a similar curiosity when I play it out. Thanks for the review.
This is the review that made me decide I needed the long scale soprano version of this. No regrets. It's a constant joy. Is it worth it? Well, I changed the strings to slightly thicker flatwound ones - and it keeps in tune better now and sounds at least as good as any guitar I have owned and is much more enjoyable to play. Love it.
Thanks for the tip on the strings. I've got one arriving in a couple of days, and I'll pass on about maybe needing thicker strings when I take it in for its setup. Planning on rocking it high-G. Haven't had a non-acoustic guitar-like instrument for, oh, nearly 2 decades now, so I'm well stoked ^_^

I am lucky enough to own one of these and A Godin Multiuke. The Risa is stunning and sounds brilliant with a touch of echo and reverb. Steel strings take a bit of getting used to. Thanks for another great review, only trouble is your reviews are skinting me I keep wanting to buy all the good ones.
After saving up for over a year and selling a few of my other ukes I was finally able to get this one a month ago. Although I absolutely love it, I keep running into some intonation issues on the C string. Took it into the shop, guy did a whole set up on it. It’s a little better now but still a little flat for my liking. Plays like butter, looks great, feels great.
haha oh my! how much fun can you have with an electric ukulele! not much you'd think... my Risa came today. i bought the TE version because I'm a huge Tele and Strat fan with several and boy! am i grateful to you Baz for showing me these. sounded nice unplugged, though quiet of course, then plugged in to my Yamaha THR10..... WOW! I'll be in my room for a week or two i think 😄😁 Awesome! Thanks 😊
Seems that they used the wrong potentiometers for the volume, you can recognise it when the poti works more like a switch. A logarithmic with another resistance value would help and it neither doesn't cost a fortune nor it's a big deal to change them. But annoying if the first thing you have to do is to heat up your soldering iron.
Nice review Barry. Don't know if I could justify owning one of these as I have too many electric guitars, but I think it would suit a lot of folk. Would love a couple of hours alone with one though, to play some rock and blues solo stuff. I think it would be a great uke for someone in a band , and would suit lead guitarists very well to add a twist.. Looks like a lovely instrument!

Great review. If you can get your hands on a Clearwater electric steel string I would love to know your opinion. They say they are the same as vorson (they look similar). Even if the electronics are crap, they are still very affordable. For electric guitarists that like modding (and may already have some pickups like rails for strats) they could be a good option. I am interested to know about their overall build quality. For people that don't want to get into modding.... Risa all the way.
I will look into it and know the ones you mean (they are re-badges of the Vorson - or the Vorson is the re-badge - same difference). I've played one but not long enough to review it but wasn't hugely impressed. The parts are much cheaper (overly large guitar knobs and a pretty nasty bridge), and I found the neck a bit rough too. Still, they are cheap and I should be able to source one for a review.
I think old telecasters had that ramp up in volume too, you can mod a telecaster pretty easily in ten minutes to make it sound normal volume ramping, you might be able to do it on this LP but I wouldn’t, doesn’t seem like much of an issue like you said
Certainly wished you would have used the pickup selector switch. Wanted to hear just more than the neck pickup. And upon doing so you would have seen more usage of the volume knob.
To be honest i don't like doing reviews of electrics full stop. At the end of the day all you are hearing is what my mic picks up from an amplifier - but everyone uses different amps, so there is no real way to do a fair sound test. I can confirm though that the selector works as you would expect it too - bridge sounds brighter and snappier, neck sounds warmer. And you can combine them.

Afraid you would need to message Risa or the dealer - i've never done it - try a chap called Mark Pugh at Stones Music - he's the distributor and will know the gauges they recommend
The zero fret might fix the problem of poorly cut nuts, but at the sacrifice of having any true open strings. There's a reason the market for zero frets is incredibly niche.
What is the tuning ? Is it standard GCEA OR is it Low G , C,E,A? Do you think the gauge of strings could be changed to tune it like a baritone ukulele tuning? Thanks.
GCEA with low G - you could have any tuning you like really (with the right string gauges!) - you'd have to ask Risa what they would recommend for baritone tuning though.
I have seen a few people say that and know what you mean - I suspect the issue is that would require a whole new fabricated part to make a 'mini' tuneomatic. Suspect that would push the price extremely high

Yeah - it's right up there, but depends what sort of electric you are after. I personally prefer electric ukes without steel strings, but that's just me.

Afraid these are always pretty limited in stock - when the come in they go to Risa dealers and sell out quick. Only thing I can suggest is the used market.

Sorry - only played the all HB model. But besides, this is the sort of elec guitar discussion that would give you convincing answers on both sides. Some say you can only shred on HBs - some say you can do so with coils!

Hi Barry, have you looked at Fanner Guitar Works electric ukuleles from South Africa? They might be better than the Risa’s. Hand crafted and similarly priced. They look and sound so sweet.
Crash Test Cal yes I know them. Not played one. Did ask him to loan me one for review but he didn’t go for it. I hear good things though. Not sure better is the word though. Similar quality i believe
I’m torn as to which to go for. I’m leaning toward the Fanner as they can be ordered as baritones, which I assume would sound more guitar-like and be a little easier to play being slightly larger than a tenor. Are they fair assumptions? I’m less than a total novice Barry.
Crash Test Cal I never find any are easier to play bar the but width making space bigger - but that isn’t dictated solely by scale length. I have big hands and mainly play guitars but mainly play soprano ukes / go figure!!
Most Uke players, play Ukulele for the clean acoustic mellow sound it performs, usually even for improvisation they would rather plug an acoustic Ukulele into an amp if need be than a solid body. And I'm one who would rather improvise with my electric guitar than a solid body Uke.
Yet... people can do what they like, and bearing in mind Risa struggle to keep up with demand on these, there are clearly a lot of players out there who disagree. I played festival stages for a few years with a Godin electric uke. Virtually the whole set ran through effects pedals of one sort or another
But, you know - whatever floats your boat. I don't get hyped by the ukulele for being a 'ukulele' - it's just another tool to make music. Hybrids like this one just add to the variety out there.
Okay as a Guitar player asking a Ukulele player. . . . Would it be too far apart for me to buy a £100 1/4 guitar and tune it like a ukelele because I'm wanting one but the £529 price tag is a bit steep for the novelty :/
Hey - guitar player mainly here too. It would give you the notes but it’s not the notes that make it a ukulele / it’s the scale length. Closest to guitar is a baritone uke but even those are smaller than ¼ guitars. Uke is scale and scale also changes resonance and response. If you put a capo on a guitar at 5th and play strings 1-4 it’s exactly same as standard uke tuning. But it still won’t sound like a uke
hmmmm that is the dilemma though. . . A bit of chorus a bit of reverb a guitar could sound more like a ukulele but if I get an acoustic ukulele... as beautiful as it is, its limited to being a ukulele. I think I'll need to head into town at some point and try one out in the flesh :/@@GotAUkulele
I have a Vorson, and while I think it's cool that you can get an electric ukulele at such a low price, I won't defend it from the criticism that it absolutely deserves. I'd be a lot more happy with it if the A string wasn't dead silent when you hook it up to an amplifier. Maybe some day I'll be able to cough up the cash for the real thing.

Thank you for the review. Really want one of these. However, what is the difference between the Risa Tenor LP and Risa Tenor SC (sold at thomannmusic)? They look identical with humbucker pickups, but one is about $200 cheaper. Seems too good to be true.
Can anyone please help me, i have purchased a second hand Risa LP Electric Ukulele, it is the soprano size with the extended length. It needs new strings, and im not sure which size guitar strings i need to use...many thanks.
I have one of those. My research indicates the top 4 strings from ordinary electric guitar strings are suitable, but you might want to stick with thinner 9 or 10s. I haven't yet needed to change mine, but I do want a flatwound low G - hence my research.
Update: I got flatties this summer. Not as easy as I had wanted to find the replacement, but I hit upon the ECG23 Chromes - Extra Light Gauge from D'Addario. I found these just a little thicker than the standard ones on the Risa and less likely to bend when fretting. The low G as a flatwound feel much better, and the C string has better tuning stability.
Just have played a couple and they both had issues. I also dont like the guitar parts they used - like the knobs which are far too big. Certainly a lot cheaper though.
@@GotAUkulele yes Czech made, but they do go through Germany to be shipped to the States. I can't really find the Vorson or the Flight anywhere. Risa price is hefty considering that would place you in the range of a very very good Acoustic /electric. I have a coco with a misi pickup in which I love.
@@moiflores5295 Ha - contrary to popular belief - virtually none of the ukes featured on here are mine. They are loaned to me, but I insist they are then taken back. You can't honestly review a ukulele if they are gifted to you. Believe me, there a many I HATE to send back, but back they must go. I actually only own, personally, about 4 or 5.
This looks great BUT ... For the price why not just get an electric guitar, put a capo on the 5th fret, and only play strings 1~4? For that much money you can get a really good guitar that is also a ukulele instead of a ukulele that is a wanna-be guitar. (I'm a ukulele player BTW)
Although I kind of agree with you in a way - insofar as I'd rather a guitar than one of these. Never really seen the point in uke world. But... people like them I suppose!
Why do you need a zero fret in this price range? It's ugly and limiting. Not that hard to do the nut right. You can't change a zero fret height to your liking. Actually, never heard someone liking these until now.

FourFingerFrenzy because of that zero fret this should be easily adjusted at the saddle. Is the 12th note flat or sharp of the open C?
Try D’Addario EXL110w strings. It comes with a 3rd wound string which you can use for your C. It will help with the intonation and overall sound.

When you use a bottle neck on it with high gain that when it comes into its Own .

Can you get a heavier meatier sound out of this if replaced with some nylon or even guitar strings?? Or just an effect pedal like an octave pedal ...
It won't work with nylon strings - the pickups work on the basis of the strings being metal. You could go with heavier gauges though

These are designed to be tuned in standard GCEA tuning - most tabs and chords you find online will work - just avoid those labelled as for Baritone.
They put a linear pot for the volume instead of a logarithmic one. Swap it and your problem will be gone.

Hi Barry, have you looked at Fanner Guitar Works electric ukuleles from South Africa? They might be better than the Risa’s. Hand crafted and similarly priced. They look and sound so sweet.
Crash Test Cal yes I know them. Not played one. Did ask him to loan me one for review but he didn’t go for it. I hear good things though. Not sure better is the word though. Similar quality i believe
I’m torn as to which to go for. I’m leaning toward the Fanner as they can be ordered as baritones, which I assume would sound more guitar-like and be a little easier to play being slightly larger than a tenor. Are they fair assumptions? I’m less than a total novice Barry.
Crash Test Cal I never find any are easier to play bar the but width making space bigger - but that isn’t dictated solely by scale length. I have big hands and mainly play guitars but mainly play soprano ukes / go figure!!

Most Uke players, play Ukulele for the clean acoustic mellow sound it performs, usually even for improvisation they would rather plug an acoustic Ukulele into an amp if need be than a solid body. And I'm one who would rather improvise with my electric guitar than a solid body Uke.
Yet... people can do what they like, and bearing in mind Risa struggle to keep up with demand on these, there are clearly a lot of players out there who disagree. I played festival stages for a few years with a Godin electric uke. Virtually the whole set ran through effects pedals of one sort or another
But, you know - whatever floats your boat. I don't get hyped by the ukulele for being a 'ukulele' - it's just another tool to make music. Hybrids like this one just add to the variety out there.

Okay as a Guitar player asking a Ukulele player. . . . Would it be too far apart for me to buy a £100 1/4 guitar and tune it like a ukelele because I'm wanting one but the £529 price tag is a bit steep for the novelty :/

Hey - guitar player mainly here too. It would give you the notes but it’s not the notes that make it a ukulele / it’s the scale length. Closest to guitar is a baritone uke but even those are smaller than ¼ guitars. Uke is scale and scale also changes resonance and response. If you put a capo on a guitar at 5th and play strings 1-4 it’s exactly same as standard uke tuning. But it still won’t sound like a uke
hmmmm that is the dilemma though. . . A bit of chorus a bit of reverb a guitar could sound more like a ukulele but if I get an acoustic ukulele... as beautiful as it is, its limited to being a ukulele.

I have a Vorson, and while I think it's cool that you can get an electric ukulele at such a low price, I won't defend it from the criticism that it absolutely deserves. I'd be a lot more happy with it if the A string wasn't dead silent when you hook it up to an amplifier. Maybe some day I'll be able to cough up the cash for the real thing.
Yeah - I played the Clearwater version ( a re-badge - or maybe the Vorson is the re-badge). Had quite a few issues with it.

Thank you for the review. Really want one of these. However, what is the difference between the Risa Tenor LP and Risa Tenor SC (sold at thomannmusic)? They look identical with humbucker pickups, but one is about $200 cheaper. Seems too good to be true.

Can anyone please help me, i have purchased a second hand Risa LP Electric Ukulele, it is the soprano size with the extended length. It needs new strings, and im not sure which size guitar strings i need to use...many thanks.
I have one of those. My research indicates the top 4 strings from ordinary electric guitar strings are suitable, but you might want to stick with thinner 9 or 10s. I haven't yet needed to change mine, but I do want a flatwound low G - hence my research.
Update: I got flatties this summer. Not as easy as I had wanted to find the replacement, but I hit upon the ECG23 Chromes - Extra Light Gauge from D'Addario. I found these just a little thicker than the standard ones on the Risa and less likely to bend when fretting. The low G as a flatwound feel much better, and the C string has better tuning stability.

Just have played a couple and they both had issues. I also dont like the guitar parts they used - like the knobs which are far too big. Certainly a lot cheaper though.

@@GotAUkulele yes Czech made, but they do go through Germany to be shipped to the States. I can't really find the Vorson or the Flight anywhere. Risa price is hefty considering that would place you in the range of a very very good Acoustic /electric. I have a coco with a misi pickup in which I love.

You can't honestly review a ukulele if they are gifted to you. Believe me, there a many I HATE to send back, but back they must go. I actually only own, personally, about 4 or 5.

Because a guitar capoed at the 5th is nothing like a uke. Same notes, but that's it. Totally different feel due to the scale.

Why do you need a zero fret in this price range? It's ugly and limiting. Not that hard to do the nut right. You can't change a zero fret height to your liking. Actually, never heard someone liking these until now.
