  • In this final video in the renovation series, the last of the Elan's major problems are dealt with, including the malfunctioning heater controls (and associated heater valve) and rough-looking wheels and I take it to the track (though I swore I never would) to learn a little more about its handling. With the installation of a wind deflector, it occurs to me that the renovation of the car is now pretty much done. It's probably as healthy as most Elans out there and while cosmetically it's far from concours, it's clean enough to look good after a polish but with enough scruffiness that I don't feel bad about driving it and enjoying it. There are more updates to come, but after 10 videos and three hours of video, I think it's time to draw the renovation to a close. Thanks so much for watching, I hope you've enjoyed the journey and it inspires you to take on your own project and offers you encouragement when things don't go according to plan.

    Conor, great videos, very interesting and informative. I had a new hood installed on mine and today the hand made seals are going on, hopefully it will now be waterproof!! Many thanks.

      Ah, thanks. I appreciate the message. I never thought of it as actually being informative, but I'm glad my efforts could actually be helpful to someone.

    A Lotus is meant to be driven,that was Colin Chapman's dream
    You are probably making this Elan better than when it left the factory.... now drive the wheels of it!!!!

    Thanks for putting this on YT Conor, I've really enjoyed following the journey after somebody mentioned it on Twitter. Will we see any content on the Colt GTi? Haven't seen one for years!

      Hi Mosly, I have a videos I made of the Colt but I haven't done a series as such. The Elan was kind of an accident, to be honest - just something I started doing to maintain sanity during lockdown - but I will document my future stuff in more detail, including my latest acquisition, a Subaru Impreza WRX

    Great series of videos, congratulations. did you ever show that door seal going on? the one that took 5 hours and still wasn’t installed?

    • @ConorTwomey
      @ConorTwomey  3 роки тому

      You mean the window frame seal? I think I covered that, yes, but I can't recall to what extent off the top of my head. As with a lot of these jobs, it was the prep work and figuring out the fix that took the time. Once I know how it went in, the seal didn't take that long.

    Hi Conor,
    Did you ever find out what the clonk was when you reverse and apply the brake? My Lotus does exactly the same thing and I have still not tracked down the cause.
    Thanks for the videos.

      Hi Tom - funnily enough, only today have I discovered I have solved the problem. I have just had the gearbox refurbed (crunchy 3rd gear synchro) and while it was off I changed the clutch too. Took it for its first drive today and the clonk is gone! I suspect it was the clutch thrust bearing, the guys found nothing in the 'box itself - they asked about its condition and when I said I was changing the clutch they said that would probably cure it- and they were right. The bearing was knackered, causing my clutch to be quite sticky too. Hope that helps!

      Ah, now that I think about it, I think the clonk in reverse was the brake pads. I had cheap pads in there initially, which didn't quite fit 100%. That particular clunk went away when I put in Brembo pads. I may also have put the retaining clips in backwards initially (seem to recall doing that) which I spotted when I put the new pads in so maybe try that first!?

    I know it's been a while since you've posted about the Elan, but do you happen to have a link to a downloadable file for ElanScan? Every one I've tried so far has led me to a dead end.

    • @ConorTwomey
      @ConorTwomey  Рік тому

      Hi Richard - The link I had was www.alanmcnicol.dsl.pipex.com/M100_ALDL.html and that appears to be dead now. I've had a poke around the Elan forum and there doesn't seem to be any new ones. I think it might still be on my old laptop but I'm not sure I can share that with you. In any case, you can still diagnose any issues you might be having using the "blinker" codes. What problem are you having?

    • @twichel04
      @twichel04 Рік тому

      @@ConorTwomey no problems. Technically I don't have the car yet, but I'm picking up an Elan next weekend and I like being prepared. I watched all of your Elan videos this morning, so I know a little bit more about what I'm getting myself into. I'm in the US though. So sourcing parts may be a little more difficult.

    • @ConorTwomey
      @ConorTwomey  Рік тому

      @@twichel04 Mine was particularly unloved so if you have the same problems I do you'll be pretty unlucky. There are lots of aftermarket bits out there and lots of GM parts fit it too so you should be OK. I took mine out for a roof-down blast in the autumn heat last night - I still love it. Longest I've owned a car for years!

    • @twichel04
      @twichel04 Рік тому

      @@ConorTwomey haha, yeah I noticed from your videos that you seem to be a lot like me in that aspect- I'll get a fun car that needs to be rescued, fix it up, enjoy it, then move on to the next one. I'll actually be swapping a 32k mile classic Mini that I brought back to life for the Elan. I wish I had documented it in the same way that you have done with your cars.

      @@twichel04 It's a lot of bloody work documenting it all but it was lockdown and I was bored and people rallied around the project on Twitter. It was fun. I still don't have a damn garage though!
