  • No time to dwell on the MOT failure - there's work to be done AND a new strategy to make sure it gets through next time. The brakes need an entire overall and then there's emissions issue - without the proper equipment to test it I need to cover all the basis - new filters, fresh fuel, some basic engine tuning and also running the engine as much as possible to nurse it back to health. While doing that I've also discovered a leaking oil cooler which needed to be dealt with and while I wait for parts I'm also chewing through the snag list in my spare time. I've decided to get my local garage to help with the headlamps and wheel alignment so with the engine and brakes now nearing completion the rush is on (again) to get everything buttoned down for another attempt at that elusive MOT.

It's weird seeing weeks and weeks of work compressed in a few minutes. But that moment when I got it back to life is worth reliving.

Thanks Wook. I didn't really intend to - many of the vids are long deleted, been pulling them down off Twitter - but I'm so glad people encouraged me to do it. I'd never have guessed I had done so much work and recorded so much video along the way. 2hrs and counting. Thanks a mill for the Twitter shout out too. Too kind, my friend. X

I'd forgotten it too. Putting these together is brining it all back, stuff I (almost) take for granted now.

Hi conor i watched these as they were happening but it's great to see them altogether. Just wondering do you think of a rough script for these or just off the cuff?

Hi Andrew - ah, interesting question. I don't script them as such but as I work I rehearse what I'm going to say so I'm pretty much good to go once I get the camera out. Sometimes I get it in one, sometimes it takes multiple goes, it usually depends on how complicated the clip is and how tired/annoyed I am.

Hi can you remember which way you turn the potentiometer thanks
Lee have you still got the Lotus

Hi Lee - I don't have the Lotus anymore, sadly. Had to sell it to contribute to the kitchen. I do miss it still though. As for the potentiometer, I don't recall which way it turned but I do remember it only take a small adjustment to change the mix - much beyond half a turn either way doesn't seem to do much. The engine is running when you do it (make sure it's up to temp i.e. wait for the cooling fans to click on and off) so you should be able to hear the difference in how the engine idles as you adjust it. It's worth, before buttoning everything up, taking the car for a test drive and making sure it runs and idles properly and also let it go stone cold and start it up to make sure it's not too lean/rich to cold start properly. Don't forget you have to put it in adjustment mode (by "shorting" the two OBD port sockets) otherwise it won't adjust at all. Hope that helps.

@@ConorTwomey thanks for the advice was the Lotus reliable while in your ownership I’ve only had mine a month 😂

@leeopenshaw9302 I think I did seven or eight thousand miles in it without any major issues, but it did eat front tyres and there were lots of little jobs to do all the time. Old cars are never finished and never completely reliable but the only time it ever left me stranded was when the cheap battery it had in it died. And even then a bump start got it going again.
