Bottom in my opinion was Rik Mayall's and Ade Edmondson's best work. I am not a huge fan of slapstick comedy but it's entertaining when it's done right. They also knew when the show had peaked rather than dragging it through the mud as what happens with allot of sitcoms e.g. Only Fools And Horses.
I agree that this is their best work, what helps to is the audience. They ain’t be told to laugh, they laugh because it’s genuinely funny seeing the chaos and energy unfolding in these episodes. Even when they do mess up a line or something the actors are so Charismatic they can get away with it. The live show too are a great example of how amazing they were.
Don't know about Only Fools. With the exception of the three comeback Christmas specials, it more or less got it right with it's development and departure.
Rik was a genius! I went to a festival with live country bands some years back. Had my friends daughter sat on my shoulders and she couldn't see the stage and I was a bit wobbly. There was a guy in front with a hat on and we bumped into him. He took his hat off and turned around and it was Ade. He just moved to side and said sorry. Never forget it, it was his band on the stage.
The BBC had some of the greatest comedy shows ever Blackadder, Bottom, Only Fools & Horses, ‘Allo ‘Allo, The Office, Red Dwarf and so many others. In fact all the best comedy shows have been English, America puts out a lot of shows and some good shows but none are in the same quality as our English shows. America also have a habit of taking great English comedies remaking them and ruining them
Gotta love Bottom!!.. Many years ago, I actually used to share a squalid flat with my best pal.. Sitting in the window, especially in the summers, looking out on any passing females (ALSO none of whom we ever attracted, btw) was a pretty regular pastime.. And yes, other friends noted our sometimes funny, sometimes 'sad', often Richy and Eddie like, existence, lol!! 😀😅😆
I've not watched this for at least 15 years, but still say things every day from the sketches " like , how do you know things, old bag" 😅😅 they will never make comedy like this again . Quality
In the 2000s Bottom seemed to fall out of the public consciousness for a while. It felt a bit 'of its time' and puerile. Now it seems to have found a new audience as well as those who loved it the first time around, as there's nothing else really quite like it, and everything feels a bit "safe" now comedy-wise. Not to mention its an absolute masterclass in physical comedy and facial expressions from Rik and Ade. I have to add that even I notice things upon rewatching it that i completely missed at the time. There's some genuinely clever stuff in the writing. I find myself quoting it nowadays more than ever. Especially on my birthday. 😂
