No dude... the logic was that the art was abandoned... it was found by European explorers and claimed.. if this did not happen, then the art would probably disappear because nature. The wrong argument is that put forth by Trevor who misunderstood what the man was saying. The correct argument is "oh, thank you for finding our art, it would have been lost without your help. I am one of those "sleepy museum cops" XD From my point of view, it's not Africa who's not ready for taking back the art. In fact most of Europe isn't ready to let go of all colonial thoughts and heritage, because most of us don't even realize how much of our culture is still based on colonial structures.
That is an excellent point. I'm French and they teach us basically nothing about colonialism in schools (except about Algeria). If the subject would not have made its way into the news, I doubt European people would have realized how much we stole from African culture. When we go to museums showcasing this art, like, we know its art from Africa. We just don't think about who it belongs to. We just think "Oh wow, it's pretty." or "So that's what it meant back then." It's about goddamn time we took the time to stop and think about giving back what's not ours.

Make my land arable and plant maize which is foreign to you... bring cows and pigs which are foreign to you... raise them for 400 hundred years and teach you to do so too... Plant all the vegetation and build all the infrastructure - roads, schools, hospitals, banks, mines and military of a country that I decided to share with you so that your people would stop murdering each other... until your descendants come to me and say I stole all these things because I have more than you and it is wrong to have more than another. Then you can murder my loved ones for this country, oust me and brand me with the minority of those who treated you unkindly from my land. Then you can erase all history of my existence, forget noble prize winners and poets and historians and mathematicians and scientists... remove every trace of them... even the language... except the bad people, keep them to remind you of those who treated you unkindly. Then you can burn the infrastructure and empty the farms, loot the banks and blame the failures on me. After that you can turn on your own kind who learnt from mine and watch everyone suffer together and laugh with glee while you flee to another country with the education you bare and money you stole while your own people suffer.

Just like certain African tribes sold slaves to the white people, they also sold "art". There is way to say what was stolen and what was bought, but Africans did in fact willingly sell stuff to white people.
In the majority of cases, that's not true - in the same way that slavery is portrayed as Europeans hunting black people, putting them on ships and taking them to Americas. They didn't, they bought them from their own countrymen and leaders in the trading posts on the coast. Same with the majority of the art - it was actually purchased, not stolen. No one, at the time of colonialism, would go half way around the world to steel a 2 ton carved rock... when he could pack 2 tons of spice, expensive wood, silk or other things that were actually sold for profit. They were mostly purchased - true, for next to nothing compared to its current value, but that's not Europe's problem. They sold it. Same as Manhattan was not stolen but sold. Sure, for a handful of colored stones - but hey, someone sold it - you can't bitch about the price later when the new owner increases its value. And the question is real - to whom would they return it anyway? Those countries with those borders did not exist at all during the colonial times. And who know from where exactly were those works of art? The whole thing is just US PC SJW guilt trip, Europe does not give a damn.
Александар Матић it seems france gives a damn. But overall, i guess i have the unpopular opinion of agreeing with your general sentiment. It's hilarious that they claim Africa can't protect and preserve its art whereas our art and cultural history was stolen and destroyed by European. Their right by one thing that we couldn't protect our history from Caucasian colonialists.
There are a lot of reasons why an honest discussion should be had about the capacity to ensure the safety of the art and Macron is quite sensible in establishing a timeframe for negotiation and another for returning the art. It gives countries the time to prepare the museums, to train arqueologists, restoration specialists etc. There are currently things disappearing from museums in parts of Africa because there is no proper cataloguing of the items. In spite of the inmense work done by rangers there is still masive poaching inside national parks. Many countries have tiny budgets and gigantic needs for public investment of all sorts. They can't spend the sort of money required to keep lots of valuable artworks because there are tons of other pressing issues such as vaccionation, district nurses, etc. Of course you can't say "africans can't take care of their won art" as if they are naturally incapable. But if you are African you know perfectly well the levels of corruption that exist in some countries and you know that there will be people willing to receive payment to look through fingers with a theft of art from a museum which end up in the collections of private citizens. It happens even from the most intensely guarded museums, just imagine how easy it could be from some places in Africa. Yes, the art should be returned. But it needs to be done properly in an orderly manner so that the museums responsible have time to build the capacity to handle a larger catalogue to countries that have institutional capacity to guard it. There is no point in it being returned, stolen and disappearing forever into the collection of some american or european private art colector and lost to ordinary people forever.
I suspect that statement is based on the countless examples of failed African states. During Egypt's change of government, over 50 pieces of ancient Egyptian artefacts were stolen from a museum in Cairo. Why would the Egyptian Museum in Berlin be motivated to return a priceless, irreplaceable artefact like the Nefretete bust, knowing the state can't protect it? You know the museums want to protect the artefacts, right?
They had the same arguments so that they wouldn't return Parthenon's marbles. Then Greece built one of the best museums in Europe and guess what? Still no marbles
It takes time but I am sure it will eventually. One of the heartbreaking things about the British Museum is just how little (almost nothing) that is actually from the British. It is like a catalogue of stolen or obtained by powerimbalances. A marvelous beautiful Museum sure, but a sad one as well. Mesopotamia, Greece, Africa, Asia it is all locked away in Britain at a time where we all have a need to see that our cultures did contribute to the greatness of human culture.

All this was even done under the name of a charity, while people donating thought they were supporting a proper development of Congo, they were sponsoring these attrocities. A bit offended by the joke for Greece. It’s ironic because Greece is one of the few European countries that is in a similar situation and can understand Africa’s problem with art. So, I would expect a more nuanced joke about Greece rather than saying it smells like feta cheese.
I think it may actually have been a little ironic: I read it precisely as a crack at the way Greece was also a colonised state of sorts and therefore looked down on by the large european powers who never really took it seriously.
Agnete Thomsen Greece was never colonized by Europeans. It was ancient Greeks colonizing parts of Europe, such as southern Italy. Please review your history sources. As long as the poor workers aren't the ones paying the bill. Remember a lot of european people never owned slaves or take part in the slave trade, if you want Europe to pay réparations then only the people who built their wealth from colonialism and slavery should pay
In general, If people feel like Africans won’t be able to take care of it, then they should build museums and other appropriate art institutions in Africa and show them how to preserve it. Set them up for success instead of not even trying. They are more than capable of taking care of their own art. Besides it shouldn’t be up to the people who stole it. It doesn’t belong to them
It's not that they don't know how to take care of it or that modern museums don't exist in Africa, it's that they could return it to a perfectly modern museum, and then the next week some local warlord drives up with soldiers packing AK-47s, and takes the sculpture so he can put in his bedroom. Moribax85 oooh well Egypt can give it back, Sudan should ask for it. But it doesn´t make right what Europe did. Europe stole it, they saw things and since they thouhgt of themselves better than those with more melanin in their organism, they thought it was tehir right to take those properties. Why should you be ashamed of what leopold II did. He was barely better towards us at the time. People dying in factories and mines an masse because they worked 12 to 14 hours a day. Caught in explosions Or generally just crushed in the machinery. (including children from 5 years and up) And then replaced an hour later and back to work you go. Being payed slave wages that you could only spend in stores that were owned by the factories before you could go home towards your shack that was also owned by the factories. Women being raped by bosses. Freezing to death. Starve to death. And if you dared complain about it the king would send the rijkswacht (roughly translated "empire's gaurd" or "kingdom's gaurd") towards us to break it up and "accidentally" kill you in the process. A process that lasted to WWI. We were second and third class citizens in our own country at the time.
Tycho Vereeck It’s a mixed bag, yes indeed, but unfortunately most countries have done horrible and cruel things in their past or presence. We should understand it as a responsibility and an important historical lesson never to forget but not as something we should feel guilty about or let us getting blamed for. If someone does that, like Trevor here, he misses the difference between guilt and responsibility.
Growing up. In my village in Cameroon 🇨🇲 I was told the story of Female fighter ( Ngonso ) who founded our tribe and how for decades her carved statue was was permanently borrowed to Europe .. so I grew up seing the fake replica and not the original
It’s good that the French president decided to bring back the history, culture and art back to Africa because its their culture and it’s their history. Same thing to Asia, when the British power took over both India and China, they tried to smuggle, buy and even steal the art made from them. So, giving back their art, history and culture is a good way to show that they care. But the other artist as shown in the video who they say they speak for art, they don’t. they speak for their own greedy and stupid ideals. I’m an artist and I don’t believe that taking someone’s art means they are respecting it, stealing is stealing man, they gotta give it back bro.
I’ve been saying this for years. I think a great way to make amends with the people around the world that have been torn from their homelands or cultures that have been ruined from conquests would be to give them some of their history back. What has been done to the history of South Americans, Native Americans, Africans, Indians, and so many more is wrong and a good way to start to say we’re sorry would be to give back what was taken from them. It’s too bad that some societies that we completely decimated are gone(like most the original people that lived in Australia and most the islands in the pacific)but we could honor their past by placing the art back where it belongs.
Danielle Martinos yeah that would be a good way to start, cause the hate for white people is at an all time high right now. How can Europe do it without going broke though
In case anyone wants to know, there is also a lot of art that was stolen from Greece and is now displayed in other countries. (For example, a lot of the Parthenon in Athens was carved up and shipped out.) They use roughly the same argument: your country is unstable right now, so it would be irresponsible to return the stuff we stole.
Don't try to compare people of different ethnicities, you all know damn well the only reason you can even comment on a youtube video is because of white people.
♥️❤️Let's just say, we all played our paet❤️💖 A Sunday New York Times article by David Streitfeld has the feminist and tech worlds up in arms. Reporting on a sexual harassment suit filed by a junior partner in a venture capital firm, Streitfeld begins by proclaiming that “MEN invented the Internet” (those CAPS are his). I came across Streitfeld’s article after a friend suggested I check out tech journalist Xeni Jardin’s Twitter feed. Jardin’s response to Streitfeld: WTF: “MEN invented the internet.” I’m sorry, did NYT just breeze past half a century of women in computer technology? Herein lies the issue: Though Streitfeld primarily covers Ellen Pao’s lawsuit, he undermines his piece by leading with an emphatic and incorrect statement about men as sole inventors of the Internet. I’m not certain if Streitfeld was being tongue-in-cheek or if he simply has a narrow view of Internet history. But his article does incite, albeit unintentionally, necessary dialogue about the roles women-and racial and ethnic minorities-have played in Internet innovation. While some apparently assume that men alone developed the Internet, a quick glance at the Internet Hall of Fame’s 2012 inaugural inductees and the Early Internet Leaders list prove otherwise. (I also recommend reading History of the Internet). In reality, the genesis of the Internet was a collaborative effort. It took decades of developments in computer programming and network technology. We can’t let the current cult of tech fandom around “white” men-such as Steve Jobs, whom Streitfeld name checks-obscure the women and the racial and ethnic minorities from around the world who contributed to the birth of the Internet. But I get it. For those who want to trace the Internet to a specific point of origin, there’s a tempting one to be had: the work of DARPA, a military research program that in 1969 launched ARPANET, the packet switching network that is the foundation of the modern-day Internet. Since the early Internet was a project of the U.S. military, we credit its development to a government institution primarily headed by men (although Elizabeth Feinler also pioneered the early ARPANET platform). Even if we focus more broadly on the late ’60s and ’70s development of the network protocols that shaped early Internet platforms, we still find mostly men-with the exception of Radia Perlman, a.k.a the “Mother of the Internet.” The relative absence of women and racial and ethnic minorities during this period of tech innovation is not surprising given the oppression these groups faced in both public and private spheres, which largely kept them out of the field. But to zero in on the DARPA era is to accept a myopic view of Internet history. The Internet was enabled by more than the development of electrical and optical networking infrastructure; it also required programming-language innovations, which eventually enabled more sophisticated communication to occur between networks. If we zoom back out and survey the computer programming landscape of the early 20th century, we see women such as Grace Hopper, who developed COBOL, a foundational language of web programming still in use today. To discuss early innovation of the Internet is to recognize that women also led the way in shaping computer and network technology That said, it isn’t necessarily productive to frame conversations about Internet innovation by which gender or race is primarily responsible for its inception, given that the origin of the Internet is about the ideas of many people. While we chuckle upon hearing that Al Gore invented the Internet 30 years after the infrastructure of the Internet was already in place, there is a sense in which Gore was a pioneer of the Internet: not because he invented codes and protocols, but rather because he sponsored legislation during the ’90s that funded public access to the Information Superhighway. If we can credit Gore as an Internet innovator despite having nothing at all to do with developing its infrastructure three decades prior, then surely we can credit women whose development of early coding language, network protocol and ARPANET influenced networked infrastructure pre-, during and post-DARPA. Certainly we can credit Ada Lovelace, a mathematician of the 19th century who is considered the world’s first computer programmer. And, of course, there’s an entire history of mathematics we can link to the African Diaspora! You get the point. The history of the Internet is untidy and perhaps best understood as a web-opposed to a timeline-of development. When we acknowledge that the history of the Internet is as interconnected as the medium itself, we recognize that women and men of various backgrounds contributed to what we now know as the modern-day Internet. To learn about today’s women tech innovators, read Laura Sydell’s “Women of the Valley” in the current issue of Ms. TOP: Photo of U.S. Navy Admiral Grace Hopper, a notable computer scientist credited for developing modern computer programming language. The show is a bit unfair to the museum in Belgium... Pieces of art are being resituted but not like in one big ship where everything dumped with no explanation whatsoever. It's complicated to find the real owner of something that was stolen more than 100 years ago. It takes times but people are working on it. Besides, I don't think just giving all of it to Kabila's dictatorship and let him care about "restitution" would please to the owners (in an ideal world that should not be our problem I agree). As you said, Congolese museum officials themselves say that they are not ready to welcome the pieces of art we have stolen from them. The museum in Belgium was reopened last week (or the week before?), and was redesigned by congolese artists who also included their own modern pieces of art that we actually paid for this time. For example, at the place of the statue of our genocidal King Leopold II, you now have an african statue created by a congolese artist. With the additional interviews, documentaries and research that is shown there, the museum is a big kick in the ass to the few still standing behind Leopold. Stolen pieces of art are still shown, but restitution is still on the table. Even if there are still many problems, this museum is a step forward for the recognition of our crimes in Congo, not the opposite. I hope that one day you come to Belgium, but before the biggest waffle heist in the history of mankind, you visit the museum ;-)

Trevor's throwing shade everywhere.. lol I also like that he said "borrowed by force" because it's so true, they stole it under the guise of civilization
Things were chaos all over the globe back in those times - mongols were raiding us, we were raiding ourselves, african tribes were raiding themselves, everyone was killing and selling and stealing and colonizing shit from everyone else. While one group of ppl eventually came out ahead, i don't think you can really look at their actions through a lense of today's values. They were a product of their time, and so was everyone else back then, not just the Europeans.
And now, they're refusing to return it under the guise of civilization.

i personally think if they cant take care of it still they should give it back first, what happens will happen (what will happen though)

@@IAMNOTAUA-camR

Though I would like to noted that any economic restitution in this day and age would literally be a logistical nightmare, as one would literally need to explore every person's history to find proof that they came from a slave family, which will be bloody annoying as freedom was officially given over 150 years ago, meaning there is a large likelihood that several documents were burned, decayed, or otherwise unreadable.

So does that mean that Europeans don’t have culture or any art or anything?

Yeah it's extremely rare for a nation to goto war with another nation then give the treasures of war back because of guilt...
Yes, we should give it all back, so when you have no more money and you cant pay rent you can go and sell it.
No one asked.
I just want the jewels on the Queen's crown. They don't belong to them either

A Sunday New York Times article by David Streitfeld has the feminist and tech worlds up in arms. Jardin’s response to Streitfeld:
WTF: “MEN invented the internet.” I’m sorry, did NYT just breeze past half a century of women in computer technology?
To discuss early innovation of the Internet is to recognize that women also led the way in shaping computer and network technology
That said, it isn’t necessarily productive to frame conversations about Internet innovation by which gender or race is primarily responsible for its inception, given that the origin of the Internet is about the ideas of many people.
