If you don't have a wave pool close by. Learning to surf properly takes forever depending on where you live. You have to wait until the conditions are right, you have to battle against kooks and egocentric surfers.
But the good thing about this is, it changed my daily routine, forced me to workout more, eat better ect.Totally worth it once you get the hang of it. Cool video man!

Thanks for tuning in Giovanni, way to stick it through. In any sport you're going to run into some sort of egotistical individuals. It's not so much of the right conditions, it's more like assessing what makes sense of your ability, if that makes sense. I hope your scoring some waves somewhere 🫡🤙🏾

Surfing, the only sport where you need to compete in order to practice.

Once you figure out how waves work and how to catch them, skateboarding is much much harder than surfing , and there’s far fewer entitled people with hyper self focused attitudes.

Thanks for tuning in! This is pretty interesting perspective especially on the hyper self focused. I feel with any extreme sport you're going to run into entitlement or ego especially if the individuals are good at what they do. Do you surf? Or have you done it a few times? I really like you're perspective 🫡🤙🏾

@@betterL8thennever thanks. I was an everyday surfer for years and feel comfortable on any wave 2-20 feet on any board. I have been an everyday skier, mountain biker, BMXer, windsurfer, snowboarder, skateboarder, rock climber and sailor throughout different periods of my life. I have worked as a competitive coach and supported athletes to win national championships and Olympic berths.
I don’t mean to pick on your audience. Surfing is hard, it takes loads of dedication. It’s uniquely challenging because the learning curve is so hard to navigate very consequential.
To be honest though, out of all the sports if done, surfing has the worst culture. I’ve made lots of close friends in surfing, but also encountered some of the most disrespectful, immature and entitled behavior outside of our current elections cycle. I have loads of respect for surfing and surfers, and I don’t feel this narrative that surfing is the hardest sport is good for surfing culture. Surfers don’t need more reasons to think they are special. Rant over. Good luck to everyone catching some good waves this week. Respect 🙏🏻🌊.

It's as hard as any sport there is. To be Pro level good, it's harder than hitting a fastball. It also really depend on your athletic ability and the time you put in. you can still be proficient and have fun , but it takes time.

Like most outdoor sports, surfing is hard. But when you compare it to similar sports: skateboarding, snowboarding, rock climbing, etc… it’s not that hard.

Surfing is the one sport I've always wanted to try but never could because I live round about as far away from any half decent surf spot as I possibly could (middle of Europe far away from the ocean or other bodies of water able to produce decent sized waves). I took a windsurfing course during a 1 week summer vacation with my school that was in a hotel right next to a pretty large lake and that was really cool but it doesn't have the same vibe I get from real surfing videos. One day I want to take a nice long vacation and attend some sort of surf-school where I can try it out for myself.

I don't think the actual act of surfing is that hard, especially if you're a board sport person. Coming from skateboarding or snowboarding. They aren't exactly the same though so those of you who do try it, the application of force onto the board is a bit different technique. It also helps if you enjoy the feeling of speed. You don't always have to go fast but when waves get a bit bigger those drops become more intimidating and faster so enjoying that feeling is important.
What makes surfing hard is all the other stuff. It's a very slow learning curve just by it's very nature. Put it this way...I consider myself a pretty good surfer. Low advanced. On a great day when everything is flowing and going right, in a 2 hour session I could probably get around 30 or so waves. Now let's calculate. A good ride might be 15 to 20 seconds. And even that might be a bit generous. (of course location matters...some lucky ones will have long rides but most will be similar to this I think). So out of 2 hours you're looking at about 7 to 10 minutes of actual riding time. That's it. 7 to 10 minutes to practice the things you want to practice.
And some waves don't allow you to practice certain things. If it's breaking fast I don't get to practice my cut backs. If it's a softer smaller day, it's really hard to practice tight pocket snap type turns. If it's soft I can't practice floaters and foam climbs. And sometimes what happens is when you get a great wave that has the right ingredients you might just enjoy the ride so much you forget to practice certain maneuvers that you need to work on. And don't forget this is when you can actually get out the back, have good positioning, and can paddle into waves well.
When you're starting out, those are the things that can take a ton of time to learn. For example, if you don't surf enough then just the simple act of paddling out on a slightly bigger day will be a huge ask for your body and drain your energy. Further, you can go surfing every single day in smaller conditions, but that still doesn't really train your muscles for when it gets more powerful. Really the only training for good conditions is going in good conditions many times to get those surf muscles where they need to be.
And once you're out the back, reading waves can be an incredibly difficult skill to acquire. Even a lot of surfers who are intermediate or advanced can still be guilty of waiting for waves to come to them rather than hunting for the peaks (beach breaks; don't snake or drop in). Developing that axis of where to be, left/right, in/out takes time and experience.
In short, surfing is hard because it simply requires a TON of time in the water. Most people just don't have that kind of time. And that's why it becomes a lifestyle for many. You schedule your life around surfing rather than the other way around.
Wave pools are changing that though.

@@betterL8thennever I’ve been surfing for over 40 years. I’ve surfed across five continents and think it’s a great sport. But when I see 150 guys in the water at places I used to surf with 10 guys back in the 80s, it’s getting a bit overcooked. I’m only going to surf in weird countries that people can’t pronounce or find on the map 😂
