What me and my buddy do quite often, we get up in our saddles and tie a rope too bag target and drag , stop , drag move , twitch it really helps with what you talked about Jason on live game, best way to train for real life situations 👍
@@outdoorsman9384 brilliant! I like that idea alot
Yes yes. I think this advice is so right on and will keep folks from giving up on trad.
I've shot thousands of arrows and still not comfortable over 12 yards. Your last video on this subject eased my mind a lot. Thanks.
Agree too many people watch channels where trad shooters are pumping shots in the 10 ring at 30 yards consistently and then get frustrated when they can not. HUGE difference between hunting and 3d distances. Hunting shots with a trad bow should never exceed 20 yards in my opinion. Too many variable to go wrong. when setting up your gear and practicing for hunting keep it close.
Great advice Jason 👍 it’s like Howard hill said” decide if you want to be a target archer or if you want to hunt” because hunting situation is a totally different thing
It sure is. And regardless or what anyone shoots distance wise in targets or 3d. In the woods when hunting, keep them close. 20 and under. preferably 15 and under means more time cooking meat!
Agree with the distance….
I practice at 5-10-15-20-25 have no delusions of how far I’m willing to try at an animal. 15 and in for me.
@neabowhunters8107 yep every shot has better odds on putting animal in the freezer when you keep the distance close
I saw an interesting video about an ancient bow that used gearing, much like a pull back toy car to achieve incredible power and speed. Wish somebody tried to design such a concept on CAD.
This guy is speaking my language... Just subscribed!
@@Ta-Seti-Ra glad you enjoyed it
Great video! Jason I always say it's not how far you can shoot it's how close can you get!!

Love the shirt -- greetings from the CA chapter. By my reckoning, if a compound shoots 50% faster than a good trad bow, then the max range should be roughly 50% further. So if a trad hunter maxes out around 20 yards, then a compound shooter maxes our somewhere around 30 yards for practical hunting purposes. To me, 40 or even 50 is doable but the stars have to align. An alert buck at 50 is just a photo op.
well said. I agree max compound distance should be 30. Many will argue that with me and that ok. But my 2 cents. 20 and under for trad and 30 and under for compound.
Solid information right there form and accuracy is very important and how and where you set up is just as important hunting with a traditional bow is an eyeball to eyeball game and thats what makes it so great.
@@user-uo2tu3mh3o agree on all points
Excellent compliment to RU Good Enough!
@@timbo749 thank you.
At.76 years old, shooting a long bow, along, long time,25 yards would be my longest, yet most are 20 yards and under,I have only killed 6 dear, one wild boar, one big black bear, which made pope and young, and a couple grouse! The record ain’t good, but you have no idea how much fun I had over 35 years of shooting traditional long bow shooting!A lot of people will give me hell, but compound bows with range finders, lighted arrows, scopes,is not bow hunting! It is only a gun without gun powder! Please get your self a long bow, practice, play the wind,be quite, and relish nature at its best !You will feel so good,no maintenance ,light weight, put, some beaver ball sinlencers on the string! Then you are as quiet as a church mouse!Criticize me all you want, but down deep inside you will feel the utter utopia of shooting traditional!Thomas A.Filipiak
@tomfilipiak3511 agree 100 and you bailed it when you said it's not about the game count, it's about the fun and adventure!

I was training at 25 yards all last week. 😅 Yeah, too many variables. Ethical shots within 20yards.

Jason,
The bow needs to be tuned. The arrows need to be be tuned and I would recommend 100 grain brass inserts and 200 hundred grain three blade broad heads. The lessons coaching record the shot sequence get it and repeat it. Create muscle memory and accuracy. Then see if you can sit still long enough for a Deer 🦌 not to notice you at 200 yards.?
Yep tuned equipment makes a difference.
" *three blade* "
Why that? A single bevel two-blade should penetrate further. Tip stability? Easy to sharpen?
@@bakters
Hey listen here Mr. Two blade single bevel with a Tanto tip and full pass through on game animals and quick clean kill……. I will tell you why…….. someday……. Just not today okay?

I'm not suggesting you are wrong. I'm simply *curious* of why you have made this particular choice.
Especially considering that so many other choices you have made *do* align with what I consider to make the most sense.
No rush, I'll wait, but I am interested to know your reasoning.
The shocking science of string jumping-an article by Chuck Adams…i think every bow hunter should read and fully understand…i believe the science broke down that a deer has the speed/reflexes to beat a 300fps bow at 12 yards and beyond…bow/arrow noise-especially the whizzing through the air as the arrow flies down range is so crucial…i shot my 6x6 two years ago with a Big Jim Mountain Monarch at 35yards-he was puffed up and angry at another buck…my doe last year at 30 yards with a Big Jim Buffalo…past 40 yards with a bow-the stars have to be perfectly aligned…past 50 is just foolish if you ask me….gotta know your game…elk/moose/black bear-60 if the stars align
@travis9687 that was a great article
Good stuff buddy! Aim small and the name of the game is keeping it close when hunting

Speaking of targets you got any good suggestions on where to purchase them just checking
I always search a bunch of places online to see who has deals going or if any blemish targets are available.
Just want to say thanks for all this helpful content. Myself and a buddy will be going trad bow hunting for deer for the first time this fall, due in large part to the education provided in this channel. A quick question, Do you have a 3d target that you recommend?
@joshlafave4927 you guys are gonna love hunting with trad bows! Target wise I like the delta/Mckenzie river bottom buck or intruder. They last a long time are not expensive The best ones are rinehart but they cost more.
I like your shirt

Sensei Jason, how often do you or rather would you recommend shooting from the stand or elevated position?
@christianb5110 as much as you can for rhe month before the season. Most Important time would be the last 2 weeks before the season starts
If your left eye dominant , but right handed, do you recommend a left handed bow?
since traditional bows dont have sights or anything like that its best to buy a bow in the hand of your dominate eye. I am left handed but shot a compund right handed (also golf right bat right etc) but when I went to a traditional bow 30 years ago I boguht a left handed bow as Im left eye dom. Best decison I ever made. only took a week or 2 to get used to shooting left handed.
Meh. Idk. I use my left to write, etc. I draw my bow string with my left hokd with my right. I used shoot left handed rifles, a Injury has forced me to shoot right handed. Took a while a few thousand shots, ( used a .22 ) but my eyes adjusted and have zero problems useing open sights. Also decided to practice shooting right handed with my bow and now can shot ether left or right.. I much prefer lefthand bows. But eyes and brain can be trained.. shoot what's comfortable and let your eyes and brain work out the rest. They will,
I just close my eyes and hope..... 😅😅😅
Less target panic or buck fever that way😂
jood job!!!!!!
@@wilmerroquemdoutdoorsinmor3519 thanks
I am looking to get a traditional bow Any recommendations ?
@wilmerroquemdoutdoorsinmor3519 so many great options. Cheap great bows like the samick sage and black hunter on Amazon to many custom bowyers you can find on forums and in traditional bowhunter magazine. It's really hard to find a bad one. Puck a style you like. Then call that bowyer and tell him your specs and what you want and they will make you one. Or any bear bow is fantastic as well. First you need to know your draw length and rember all trad bows unless otherwise specified are dwar weight measured at the 28 inches and go up or down about 3 pounds per inch either way.
I’m in Alaska and guys here regularly take 40+ yard shots at animals with compound bows and I just heard about a guy taking a caribou at 90 yards with one! I’m not saying that is okay, and I personally feel a 90 yard bow shot is unethical even if he was by chance successful. I’m just informing what the reality is.
heck there are antelope hunters (its a small animal) taking 120 yard shots with compounds. Its disgusting.
Do you shoot instinctive or gap?
Incase he doesn’t have time to respond he shoots instinctive. Been watching Sam about a year now his tips and tricks are so good.
@@thrivingarkansas1925 thanks
@DixieBowhunter-m5g I shoot purely instinctive. If I shift focus to my arrow or anything other than where I want the arrow to hit I blow it! Gap is the best way for many people and especially in the beginning. And there I times I wish I was a gap shooter. But I can not. I can not even think about my release or anything. I have to focus hard on where I want to hit
