Man, massive credibility and integrity points for this review! So many YT bass reviews gloss over the negative aspects of a bass, but not this one! LOL I thought the review was fair and balanced, but would add that given the price point (under $600 USD), this is the quality and caliber of bass I would expect from a company whose primary focus is amps. At that price point you can get better basses (Spector Legend, Sterling MM, Squier). Keep up the great work!
I would’ve expected something a little weirder or experimental, what’s the point in making a slightly worse precision bass when they’re already a hugely popular and successful company? It’s not even very low priced so it can’t compete with beginner models or anything like that
Never witnessed such an insane neckdive on any other instrument ever, not even Thunderbirds. Looks nice hanging on a wall though, but they really should stick to amps.
This is the most honest review you will see about this bass. Bassist Christ put it through its fullest paces and came to the stunning realization of "It ain't great" found in the Bass Bible Chapter of Ampeg 11:20 when talking about Orange. Jokes aside, fantastic vid and glad to see the transparency
A simply awful professional and amateur bass instrument. Two sitting in a country music store I was visiting two days ago. Never seen these before. Picked up one, balance was completely out. Neck is just too thick. Picked up the other one next to it, just in case it was better (or worse) and it was the same. The overall shape is thoroughly gormless and bland. No perceptible reason to buy one unless you think you need to prove a point. But please don't buy one. Be suspicious of anyone who tells you they're any good.
Agree with you 100%.. had one back in 2015 .. didn’t like the neck dive , the too wide neck at the headstock ( 44 mm !!! 😳) , the sticky finish on the neck , and having the body dig into my arm when playing it ..
O my, I was ready to try this some years ago but never got ahold of one. Kinda glad I did. Love the orange, but that's about it now I guess. Is the sound cutting out from time to time btw?
My first Precision Bass---an original 1962--had a nut width of 45mm(1.75") and coming from a Framus with a neck like a broom handle, it was sheer heaven for me. Since then I have always gone for basses with wide necks. I have bought a couple of Jazz basses thinking I would get used to the narrower neck---I didn't and quickly got rid of them.
The quality of your videos is insane, congratulations dude. About the bass.... I had the 2017 black version and sold it due to the unbalanced bass and neck heavy. On top of that it had an awful fret job.
Okay, now I'm kinda glad I suscribed. I got this Orange Crush 50 which I kept for home practice because it's a freaking jewel, so when the O-bass came out, I really went all "oohs and aahs". For good or bad, I don't think it's available here in México for now, but I was willing to wait in line, now I... think I'll wait for another five years if they improve all this issues. The looks are certain eye-candy, but I think you could add wheels to that fretboard and ride it to the next gig... XD
Oh No the O Bass has neck dive which can damage the instrument. I like the O Bass's split coil which is popular with Precision Basses from Fender for metal rock and pop. I really love Orange Amplifiers but the O Bass looks and sounds uncomfortable to play
I've had two of these. The electronics are very cheap-no better than a base model Squier. Any better quality you may have perceived is in your imagination (that includes the PU). The painted neck is a plus for me. I find sanded or satin necks to be to have too much friction. I installed Keller Sound wiring harness and a 1/4 pounder and it sounds good to me. I have other basses I like much better, and this is definitely overpriced, but it does have some nice qualities if you can find one used at a good price.
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" to make me buy this bass. Something like that. EDIT: That's a shielding rather than a grounding issue. A few feet of tape fix 'er right up.
I have this bass, the older one. It doesn't really sound like a classic P-bass, and it sort of sounds... a bit more scooped, probably? More treble and more bass, less low-mid presence. I stuck a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 and... it wasn't really much of an improvement (slightly clearer tone, but only just, and maybe a bit less character, but nothing that's going to really be noticeable in the mix). The stock pickup is mostly fine, really. I don't like how it sounds with roundwounds (it's a bit too scooped for my tastes) but with old-school flats (Pyramid Golds, in my case) it's really gorgeous. Regarding the neck, I have small hands but I don't have much trouble with it; the slab body quite appeals to me too. It doesn't balance very well but with a suede strap it's fine. I paid €250 for it, second hand, with a Fender Yosemite pickup (nothing special). At that price it has the looks, it feels solid, you can't go wrong. At €500, it's quite steep. The right price in my opinion is around €350, perhaps.
I own one and I love it. The only issue that you mention I agree with is the neck dive. I have 0 other issues with it. It is a monster P bass tone and honestly it does nothing but get compliments in the studio and live. I am sorry you did not enjoy it, i sure enjoy mine.
@@ampthebassplayer I honestly think it’s a bass you gotta have for awhile and really dig into and use. It’s a monster to tame its quirks but it is a quality instrument for under 1000.
@@Wharbaby This has been one of the only basses that physically hurt me to play. I spent about a week with it before I made my video, and I just never got comfortable with it, and actively dreaded playing it.
Pretty weird they painted the back of the neck and headstock when they could've just painted the front of the headstock orange to match the body like the Peter Hook Yamaha Bass from a few years back.
I’m looking to buy a bass for in the studio ~ I mostly play guitar and keys and have been doing what I need to on a cheap bass from my uncle’s 80s band… Budget should stay ideally under 1k but there’s some air up to maybe 1.5k for the right bass… I would love a rickenbacker but I think that’s out of my league 😅 Any recommendations? Look wise I’m attracted to the fender vintera ii 70s tele bass but I’m open to anything really, I just want really solid quality and a reliable four string for years to come. I have big hands but mostly guitar so would also consider short scale.
In terms of the nut being 44mm wide, please remember that a 1957 Precision bass is 1 3/4" or 1.75" at the nut, and many P basses are 1 5/8" inches They basically based their overall neck width on a P bass neck, not a jazz neck (1 & 1/2" ).(also including P bass split singles coils.)
44mm width of the nut is too wide and difficult to play for most bassist's the metric scale is a British thing as Orange Amplification are United Kingdom based. I still prefer Orange's amplifiers as my go to amplifiers like the tiny terror amp head but if you want a no nonsense practice amp their's the Orange Crush Mini its loud and in charge
I rather buy a Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jazz Bass Or Sterling Ray 24 by Music Man. Both instruments are going to have smaller nuts, less dive and a easier playing neck over the Orange O bass.
just save up for a Fender Precision Bass or a Squier Precision Bass which is cheaper than the Fender P Bass it's a more solid bass for rock metal and pop etc. But the O Bass I would avoid as its got neck dive issues its uncomfortable to play and it doesn't sound as awesome a a Precision Bass
Great review, how is it compared to other basses when it comes to pricepoint? I know it has its shitty sides but I still want one, it looks cool and its made by orange.. haha
Honestly, if you watched this video and still want one I say go for it. It’s uncomfortable and unbalanced, but if you love it in spite of that you’ll find a perfectly decent P bass.
Very average assessment from a very average player ! first you don't explore that it's a under $500.00 unit ! and compare it to a Fender P. absolute waste of a post !
That intro track sounds great! (Shameless plug 😹😹😹)… I can definitely see, as a guitar player, how this instrument caters to us rather than bass players. When looking for a bass, guitar players might just pick something that looks cool/unique and sounds good enough - we are less likely to pay attention to quality/comfort (especially in a gigging context)… that being said, it’s weird to think why this product even exists. Orange?! Why?!
Tired one out at a London bass guitar show several years back and it sounds like you had the same observations I had back then, probably one of the worst feeling new basses I’ve tried. Unnecessarily blocky and uncomfortable. Felt like a £150 (or less) bass from the 90s/00s (emphasise on those eras since in the past few years Harley Benton have proved what can be done on a budget)

I'm not usually one to comment on a bass's color, but man, I love that orange. And the white binding completes the creamsicle vibe.
It’s a great look! If the bass was half as fun to play as it is to look at, this would be a home run.
the o bass in orange looks striking but as it is uncomfortable to play I'd rather play a Fender Precision bass which is more comfortable to play
Goddamn it, I love you so much Andrew hahahaha

why the fuck is it NOT short scale??

A 44mm neck... Compared to a 41/42 on a P bass... 2 mm

Consider how bigger a P neck feels compared to a J and there’s only about a 3mm difference between them.
