According to writer Carl Gottlieb, the line "You're gonna need a bigger boat" was not scripted, but was ad-libbed by Roy Scheider.

I heard that the reason Roy walked back into the cabin before saying it was so people could calm down enough to hear his line. When the shark emerged it gave people such a shock that Roy's line couldn't be heard over the screaming and commotion.

Did you know that in 2005 Carl was doing a convention with Peter benchley. It's on youtube. The two are interviewed for quite a while. And he stated that he was corrected by Roy scheider himself when Roy told him that it was in fact in the script. And that while Roy did improvise lines that was not one of them.
