Totally love Hera but I was going hard for Viper on this one after he cleared Daut. Viper was playing like an absolute legend in the final. Hera is hardcore though. Can't wait to see what's next.
I would say Viper could still be at Heras level if he would ackknowledge that he gets older and needs to take care of his body to perform consistently over a longer duration. Generally: be sporty, eat well, hydrate, sleeping schedule; But more specifically: stand up between games, stretch, get circulation going, hydrate more than you think you need. The level is incredible and the concentration needed is insane. To perform on this level for hours you need to be either young, or do things to improve your bodies ability to concentrate. Nobody over 25 can hold this concentration while just sitting down in a chair. Actually I think Hera said he does things like pushing circulation between games to be as fresh as possible. That to say, its a commitment and a decision to have it and I dont know how far Viper wants to go for being the best. And cant blame him, he reached it all. But could be cool seeing him again at 110% now that the overall level is so high. I just want to see that guy dominating, its so fun. :D (Also Viper plays best if he just has fun and feels no pressure is my impression)

3rd place match might not matter for someone like TaToH who has a lot of S-tier experience, for Seb it's huge. Playing against the best of the best will help people develop into better players, $1,000 extra prize money is also huge for players who are part-time or have other traditional full-time jobs. Even if Seb had a bad draft in the semis like TaToH did, it's an opportunity for him to trial a new draft strategy straight away and learn. Instead of waiting weeks or months for another opportunity to draft against someone in the top 4. TaToH probably doesn't need to trial a new strat or wait that long to go up against another top 4 player. It also gives better viewership for tournaments which will hopefully entice sponsors to come on board so we can diversify from just Microsoft and community donos.

In regards to the conversation that starts around 34:43, as a former tournament organizer for Smash Bros. games (which are traditionally double-elimination), I also take issue with the "3rd place match" that seems very prevalent in AoE2 tournaments. It is essentially looking at the players who lose in the semi-finals of a single-elimination tournament and saying "okay, but not for you guys, for you guys EXCLUSIVELY, this is actually a double-elimination tournament". The justification of 3rd place paying more money is flimsy at best because the alternative is to simply have a tie for 3rd place and pay them equally. With this in mind, playing the 3rd place match would feel to players like fighting just to REMAIN at 3rd place and not lose some of your prize pool, rather than playing to advance and win more prize pool; "you've already achieved 3rd place, now try not to lose it". I believe the real reason for it is so that there IS a distinct 3rd and 4th position in the final standings, but if you want that, in my opinion, have the final bracket be 8-man double-elimination instead of 16-man single-elimination. It's kind of like Thursday Night Football in the NFL. The players hate it and it's bad for their mental and physical health, but fans want football on Thursdays. Players surely don't enjoy having to play a 3rd place match, but we want to see a distinct top 4, not a top 2 and a tie for 3rd, so tournament organizers feel a need to have it for appearances' sake in a single-elimination bracket. I had a similar issue with how Nation's Cup 2023 was handled last year. I don't think that a single game win in a best of 7 series holds the same advantage as every other team having a second life, and it felt like punishing the team that performed the best on the winners side. Traditionally in a double-elimination bracket, if the player or team coming from the losers side wins in the grand final, there is a second, sudden death grand final series played with both participants now having lost one series.
And in all those years when Hera was grinding and learning from the likes of Viper Tatoh and Daut, they got old. Hera is not even 25 right? obviously the mentality will be different now. Take prime Viper of 25 YO, he will swipe the floor with prime Hera any day of the week.
@@FaTal_AxE That's apples and oranges imho, like comparing star football players of different eras. The game itself is played differently now and has shifted tremendously over the years. I also think that prime Viper's competition was nowhere near what Hera is facing these days. I think it would be a very close and interesting match.
I think it's a very fair assessment. Hera is without any doubt the peak of AoE2, no player has achieved the level Hera is playing at the moment. However, Viper didn't have to. In Viper's prime, he was already completely sweeping the floor with any and all competition, so much so that even his fans were begging him to lose a tournament to spice things up (a similar thing is starting to happen with Hera now). If there is no competition, there is also no innovation, there's no drive to get better, no player at the same skill level to practice against and learn with. Prime Hera vs prime Viper would push each other to play better consistently and it could go either way. The age card is definitely valid, the dude is playing with a tumour in his hand and has a kid about to pop out, that wasn't a factor back then, you can't say that's not a factor now.
What Sebastian is doing now by learning from Hera gameplay , Hera did that with Viper. He literally copied his style and got here at this level. Not taking anything away from Hera, but that's the fact. As Daut mentioned back in the day, Viper would make the opponent work for killing every unit, he would have enough army at every place to defend, as Hera does it now. and Viper did all that before DE, imagine if he didnt have the age factor and wrist injury, He would be so much better right now with no one ever close to beating him. Yes Hera could potentially have come close, but IMO theViper will remain no 1.
Even if Viper had won the Arena game and we went to game 9, then that would have been Land Madness. That's one of Hera's best maps and he also had Chinese available. So advantage still him I'd say.

Man,,, viper, tatoh playing the old card is not ok! Hera grinded years and years to beat them!
Do aoe players really call bombard cannons "BBC's"? 💀
yes
Yes. Why, did your mind go somewhere else..? :P
@@ar1sm70He probably thought about the British Broadcast Channel 🤔
masmorra, let them get some sleep man... tati man almost fell asleep obviously and was very happy when it was finally ending :)

Viper only lost due to draft..he should have won the Arena game and needed better civs
Even if Viper had won the Arena game and we went to game 9, then that would have been Land Madness. That's one of Hera's best maps and he also had Chinese available. So advantage still him I'd say.
