To those complaining about the brass instruments, bear in mind these are natural brass instruments, unlike the modern valved ones AND unlike most baroque brass instruments used in period ensembles, which use either holes (trumpets) or the hand (horn) to change the pitch.
Playing these natural instruments is extremely hard. I, for one, salute this orchestra for their historical accuracy and their bravery.
I'm no expert or musician but it seems like the original French horns are the most difficult to play. How do they do that?
@@josephanthony8585 This would have been the period where horns were first used as orchestral instruments, taken from their original use as 'hunting horns'. When they were hunting instruments, they would be played 1 handed so the player could also be on horseback. Without the addition of the extra hand to correct pitches inside the bell, the horn can only function on the harmonic series determined by the length of tubing given, which leaves many pitches out of tune with the equal-tempered system we use in virtually all western music. So when playing on the original instruments, it's actually near impossible to get perfection intonation, because you don't have the ability to correct pitching with your other hand!
As far as difficulty goes, it's just a different style of playing to the modern instruments, as all the work has to be done with your embouchure; though the horn is widely regarded as one of the most difficult instruments to learn generally.
Seriously, this may be the first performance of Handel I've ever truly enjoyed, intonation be damned! I never enjoy playing Handel in a modern style-it comes off so staid and sterile. This has life and energy! Seriously incredible work by all involved.
You are right. Baroque music with baroque instruments. Maybe my favorite era.
Yes, but albeit bravery, I would have sacrificed historical accuracy for finer sound. My ear is not very good, but it is rather distracting.
Not only the horns - with crooks notice - and the natural (valveless) trumpets (TWICE the length of the modern instrument) which required getting up into the highest harnonics in order to play melody: a skillful use of wind and lips alone which only a few modern trunpeters can manage... but note also the baroque oboes (only just evolving from their Rennaissance ancestor the HAUTBOY) yet note also the authentic eighteenth century kettledrums (hand tunable only and with no modern ratchet mechanism) and played authentically for the period with very hard-ended beaters. Conductor and musicians here have done Handel proud. This is EXACTLY how he wrote it and wanted it played! BRAVO!!
Soberbio comentario. Me interpreta al 100% . Viva Händel !❤Viva la música Barroca !!❤❤
Fireworks will never sound the same after this. Fantastic drums.
Absolutely marvellous, never seen or heard so many old instruments together at one time. I love it and suspect it is closer to Handel's original score than today's modern instruments.
Oh, I love these powerful women playing drums and horns! Wow!
Yes. When I was a kid in the 80s girls played only flute, piano or cello. I’m happy things changed.

It is 27 March 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic. It is 1:30am on Day 3 of a one month lockdown in New Zealand. I woke up an hour ago in the midst of a massive panic attack and could not settle. Decided to look for some music my late parents used to listen to and found this. In moments I was transported. I had forgotten how marvellous Handel is and this rendition is particularly vibrant. Thank you for the lift! 💛
This is truly a terrible time in our history - but the remedies of the past still work today! Handel was a God-send!
I empathize with your seeking out music for comfort. We all need emotional support to get us through difficult times. Handel and Bach are my mainstays to relieve stress. My thoughts are with you. I'm so glad we have such music.
Kueta35 My feelings and situations in pandemic covid 19 are the same way. Hendel’s music is marvelous.
One month later and I'm up at 4 am listening to the same music in the same country. Hope you're keeping well Kueta35
Hope you're feeling much better Kueta35. Bach and Handel are so calming to me. They wrote SO much music. keep listening. It will always help! Big hugs from Australia, and feeling a bit the same!
Finally! A conductor who actually conducts!!!

When the first recital was given 11.000 listeners went to the banks of the river Thames and I believe 4 people were killed that kind of a bit star was Handel in those days. What a performance fromt Le Concert Spirituel, great. Thank you H. Niquet
Changed my mind. It's absolutely BLOODY marvellous. What a triumph!!! Herve Niquet is quite the popinjay. However, I could forgive him anything for eliciting such a sublime performance.
269 years later, this music is still fan-tas-tic !!!
Handel's music here is just beautiful, glorious, majestic!
God! What a performance. Handel would have had goosebumps if he had heard this beautiful version.
I thought the tempo way too fast causing it to lose a bit of it's intended majesty, otherwise, an excellent, breathtaking performance and recreation of a brilliant work.

Simplemente...MUSICA GRANDIOSA !!!! del Genio G. F. Handel. Interpretacion al mas puro estilo BRITANICO... EXCELENTE !!!
Love the percussion flourishes. Exuberant like it should be.
A treat for the eyes as well as the ears - the rough sound of the horns gives me tingles & brings tears to my eyes. If I'm feeling down or disappointed or stressed I turn to this.
the greatest of all: GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL !!! the very master of baroque ! until now !!! So powerful so great so mighty so fluent ! This is the genius of Haendel ! For ever !
It is now time to watch 'The Madness of King George'.
All of them are masters though. Bach has different styles. Handel has different styles too.
Mdebacle It’s a shame that the movie had to be given such an Americanised title for something so absolutely British; the correct form in English would have been ‘The Madness of George III’ (or possibly ‘...King George III).
It is so nice with all the original instruments and I love the conductor, he looks like a magician and is so free. Beautiful

A feat of the imagination. All thanks to the one who was granted the privilege to hear it within the stillness of the air, was blessed with the musical gifts to notate it, and brought to multitudes of people such a pleasant and resplendent feast for the eyes, ears, and senses.
Splendidly triumphant - exactly what it should be - WOW!!!!
what a fire...
I'm moved with the conductor...its brilliant
I have been listening to baroque music since I was 7, when I was introduced to Handels music for the Royal Fireworks, and Water music, and have listened to many variations of both. This, is by far, the best! To hear it as it would have been heard, over 200 years ago, is wonderful. Love the conductor, such flamboyance, and purpose. And kudos to the players, for their passion. Why did I not find this sooner? But find it I did, and glad of it I am. To those people that don’t like this, go back to your caves.
Discovered Handel's music during a visit to Kensignton Palace in 2002. It is wondeful and I could listen to it every day.
When I am down for any reason, I switch over to this magestic performance and return completely relieved. Thanks to Herve and his beautifull crew. Look forward to any occasion to meet, Thanks...😀
relieved... that I don't need to practice to perform at the Proms!

When I first saw this, I thought it was way too fast, but getting into it, my opinion changed 100 percent to positive. This is what Handel would have heard, and these brave souls deserve kudos! Quite a moving performance, and the conductor knows his business!
The power, the glory, the majesty...the period instruments. What is
not to like??? Bravi!!!
nice, but no fireworks ? :D ok, it's unfair, but the piece was meant for "open space" and splendor on river thames, not for indoor performance
How beautiful is the sound of these keyless natural instruments from the time of Handel. Although the pitch is not so perfect, they sound with the real sound of the time
I was there :)
Additional color. The musicality of the performers carries the day.

Of course, when you consider the setting of this piece's premiere (i.e., outside), it would make sense to intentionally sacrifice some refinement for the sake of power. In my opinion, that approach is much more conducive to this particular piece.
How adorable!! Sweet as honey, strong as pepper and warm as a camp fire!! Makes the soul sing & the heart feels safe.
BRAVO!!!!! ⚘👏👏👏
GLORIOUS! SUPERB CONDUCTOR! EXTRAORDINARY ORCHESTRA!
The first few bars I thought: way too fast. I was wrong. Hervé Niquet made a wonderful interpretation of this music!!
I thought that was Count Dracula conducting.
@wkruit..Still...a bit overtempo for the type instruments used. Made musicians appear sloppy when they were working hard.
The magic that happens when we all work together as one! Bravo 👏
What an experience to have to been there its absolutely fantastic to listen to online but in the Albert Hall.
Best rendition I have ever heard!
I have seen comments on the tempi/tempo of this performance……..personally I think this is superior to any performance I have seen, just perfect.
Exciting! There is an energy that builds and builds in this brilliant interpretation. Handel's music is among my favorites. One is forced to wonder what would come from Handel's pen were he alive today, what would his music sound like with the benefit of centuries of advancement in instruments and acoustics.
Thomas Campbell Centuries of advancement?? I think not.
Agree with everything you say. Would have loved to have lived in peaceful tes in the past.
Sorry That should be times
Really great. Passionate musicians. Passionate conductor. Great European music.
This is the greatest performance, isn't t it? Wish i could be there back in 2012 ...
Think what you like, the conductor was amazing, no music in front of him, he felt every note, and for once we had a very authentic orchestra composition, this was very much the way it was intended to be heard, bravo, a truly original performance.
I agree. Wonderful.
The opening movement was our wedding march, BRAVO! And Herve Niquet is one fantastic conductor.
Hearing this, especially the kettledrum solo, makes me wish this was played at every major fireworks event :)
When a graduate student at Cambridge University 1967-70 the Band of 64 woodwinds, horns, trumpets snare and kettledrums performed the Fireworks Music in front of the Gibbs Building facing the Backs on of the days during May Week which of course being England was in June and lasted 10 days. What a memory for life!
I never tire of listening to this magnificent performance. Instruments that are not easy to command with a lush sound as Maestro Handel intended. What pure joy.

Händel has never souned more French and it is absolutely magnificent! My favourite interpretation of this masterpiece ❤ The instruments, the nuance, the grandeur and delicacy - a catefully thought out performance that stands out and brings new life to a composition we've heard countless times.
Handel’s (sic) music is essentially Italian-style massively tweaked for English ears; what is it you identify as particularly French here (apart from the superb French performers) ?
Absolutely wonderful!!!!
This masterpiece is universal, and transcends the times

Those complaining about the tuning of the brass need to get a grip. Observe the trumpets and horns, these are historical musical instruments that changes it tune based on the shaping of your mouth or the cup of your hand in the bell. There are no valve levers. Give it a try and see how it goes for you.
James Dean
No one is complaining about musicians using instruments from the early 18th century for music from the early 18th century.
Yes, agreed, intonation isn't everything. This is probably very close to how it sounded in 1749.
Not everyone is a professional brass player, if you've ever heard problems, they must've been from students.
As you can see on the hornists, there is no hand in the bell. This was the style to play the horn up to 1750, when the "stop technique" was discovered und developed. The switch from open play to stop technique was one off the manys steps away from baroque and towards classical style around 1750. Händels horn players still played without stop technique. Only 5 years later the horn players in the new Mannheim orchestra under Jan Stamitz frequently applied the stop technique.
I mean, the tuning on these instruments aren't that good, valves weren't incorporated because they weren't sure how to adjust pitch in that form.
Just listen to 1:35 it's terrible
I think this suite is way ahead of its time because it reminds of the compositional style of the romantic composers (Berlioz, Holst, Sibeluis). The overture is extremely great. Handel was a visionary
If ever there was a true universal language, Handel found and mastered it. How wonderfully these gifted musicians and Conductor share their love for this very exciting and spiritual work with each of us. Thank you.

This performance these wonderful performers with incomparable skill and exquisite technique is beyond description , and full of admiration , tribute and emotion
How wonderful that this music is being played more and more in the manor in which it was designed to be played, with the sound of that time. For so long the only variation in music was to make it faster. Faster is simply a trick, a parlor trick for musicians who either practice a lot or have the knack for moving their lips and fingers fast. Boys, that aint music. This is music, the most joyful to my ears of all the genres.
Imagine the original performers, doing their utmost to deliver the finest performance possible, especially all of the brass instruments without valves, and any and all instruments that might be adversely affected by the climate on the river, and delivering that performance for a king, conducted by the composer, whilst floating on the Thames. I am awed by this performance of work I am intimately family with with, knowing the human whistle part from the beginning to the end.
🇬🇧Playing the ancient instruments is new to me! But I thought a marvellous performance! 🇬🇧
Think of the talent it took to be able to write this music. And how lucky we are to be able to hear it played on the original instruments, hearing it just as Handel would have. The drum solo is wonderful!
