GM Duramax Diesel Piezo Injector Operation

  • Weber State University - Advanced Vehicle Systems Lab. A brief description and demonstration of the GM Duramax 6.6L Diesel Piezo Fuel Injector system of the 2011 - 2013 GM Duramax equipped trucks. The Piezo crystal stack in this injector can react in 0.0001 seconds and deliver up to 7 injector fuel pulses per combustion event. This injector system is much quicker to react than the previous model injectors that were electromagnetically actuated. This allows for more power, better fuel economy, and cleaner emissions.

    Another superb video to help explain how this work. I was just strugling to explain piezo to my step son last night in an easy to visualize way, this is perfect!
    When using the megger you should drain the voltage after each time i believe (well on mine you have too anyway it has a button just for that. That's was in part why it did not go to zero when you left the wire. It also helps keep the bateries last longer.

    The crystals change configuration or shape and return back to their original shape great tollerence to any effect of heat or wear. By changine shape, you create a leak within where fuel passes through. You can pulse these so many times and they will always return back to its original shape

    Yes, the only injector capable of producing 4-6 injection sequences in a single stroke.Pre and post, greatly reducing nox, giving a cleaner burn and eliminating diesel knock resulting in a quieter engine

    And as we all know, the crystals do not operate directly on the pintel. It lifts another piston that changes hydraulic pressure, opening the pintel. Thanks for the video!

      +kraymer999 LOL, yes, as it turned out, the 1000V setting caused a spark between the meter leads rather than actuating the injector. I had the leads too close together. After I moved them farther apart, it worked fine. Have a great day!

    This is a good qualitative test, but if the injectors can really consume 30Amps times 250Volts for a total of 7500 watts as stated in the video. there is no way that battery powered meter is a good functional test. I assume fluke is correcting the actual applied voltage by changing the displayed impedance. Note that coming in contact with 250 volts dc at 1 amp could be lethal. Thank Tesla for the ac system in our homes.
