  • We, at Engineered Diesel, created this video to help our customers have a better understanding of how a common rail diesel injector works, which makes it easier to understand why they fail. This video also points out common failure points within the injectors. If you are experiencing ANY of these symptoms, you may need new injectors.

    Thank you for putting this up . Start to understand why they are so expensive , good materials required to cope with high pressure & heat + tight tolerances .............. makes you want to go back to carbs !

    Low sulphur diesel can be blamed for a lot of injector pump failures since the sulphur content acts as a lubricant. The mk3 mondeo tdci has this problem. When the pump wears it releases tiny metal particles into the fuel system. There were a number of cases of an injector being held open flooding the cylinder causing a bent con rod. Modern diesels are great when they're running right but can be an expensive pain in the arse when they go wrong.

      I think two stroke oil in low proportions can fix this problem with the lubrication. I read on forums and most guys that tried either got improvements or got nothing. I never saw anybody complaining from the two stroke oil. Some even said that their engines stopped smoking at high loads and rpms and became quieter .

      Hi Sir. May I ask what would be the safe amount of sulfur content in a diesel to refrain from failures? Thank you

      At CN we use a ultra high sulfur diesel fuel so this is not much of a problem. Our GE es44ac still has issues though.

      Wouldn't high sulphur increase also increase corrosion tendency of the medium.

      It's not the sulfur, it's everything else that's refined out with it

    the weakness in common rail is the pump that has maintain high pressure in the rail. Proper diesel injectors are driven by a large full size camshaft and are very robust.

    • @xdygmnyrdf
      @xdygmnyrdf 5 років тому

      the injectors are driven by only 2 wires, no camshafts. this isnt pumpe duse system

    • @slec-wz1db
      @slec-wz1db 11 місяців тому

      most common failure is the suction control valve, not the injection pump itself.

      @@slec-wz1db lets not forget rust........its a common problem that the dissolved moisture in diesel fuel causes rust to form in the metallic components, and common rail pumps dont like rust at all. There are large, high efficiency filters that can scrub out dissolved moisture, but the OEM filters fall far short of that.

    • @slec-wz1db

      the internals of the injection pump, fuel lines, leak off lines and injectors on denso common rail are made of high grade stainless steels. I have not cut open a fuel rail itself but I have seen a fuel rail relief valve and it also made of stainless steel. I would presume that the fuel rail is also made of very robust material as it has to withstand fuel pressures over 4000 psi.

    Very Very Nice Video, I loved it. Now I understand the Injectors better. I have a 2007 Nissan Qashqai 1,5dci K9K engine that won't start. I am here in Mozambique/Africa. Luckily I have some experience on injectors, and I do have a Ultrasonic Cleaner. I did dismantle them all and cleaned them . Did a test on the Car, they blow diesel fantastic.. Unfortunately the car still doesn't start. I will do a Leak test tomorrow, and update. Are there any special tools available to open solenoid part , and get to clean the small inlet nozzle ?

    So it looks as though such a nozzle could spray continually - like the fuel injector in a gas turbine - so long as the fuel rail was maintained at a suitable pressure and a constant current was applied to the injector. I wonder how wide the range of pressures is for which it would atomize the fuel.

    Sure injector leaking cant cause blueish smoke as the blueish comes from oil. So like valve stem seals in head or worn rings.

    One question no one seems to know the answer to. And a firm in Brighton called auto diesel marine a Bosch agent repairing injectors and repairing engines had no idea. How terrible they did not know the exact point in a Diesel engine when the injector fires. I’m after thinking about it, believe that it is either just after piston has reached top dead centre so as the explosion goes off it fires downwards. Or as piston rising from air intake stroke. As it’s pressurised in the rail, and if it was to be injected into the compressing air, I would think maybe when piston is 75 percent up and air not too hot yet to make Diesel go bang. My first answer I believe more though. Do you know?

    Could a high pressure in common rail fault be caused by the high pressure pump not shutting off?

    • @lockie9341
      @lockie9341 2 роки тому +1

      usually caused by a faulty suction control valve allowing too much fuel to flow through the pump (the pump is constantly driven by the engine, pressure is regulated by flow control)

      I think increases fuel consumption
      Black smoke

      Excuse me if my answer is not Wright

    • @viniciuslima4556
      @viniciuslima4556 Рік тому

      If the valve is leaking, the injector will be constantly open due to the pressure difference between the lower part of the needle and the upper part (piston). That would mean you would not only be wasting the fuel but would also be highly increasing the amount of diesel that is not completely burst, which would then be burst in the exhaust system leading to that black smoke coming out of it.

    I have a Peugeot 308 1.6 HDi diesel automatic with electronic gearbox. I put it into the local Peugeot dealer for a diagnostic test as the 1st and 2nd gears were a bit "lumpy". The test revealed a fault on Injector #1. They said that this could POSSIBLY be the problem withe gear change "lumpiness"!!! They said to RENEW this injector would cost me £844.21p!!!!! (where did the 21p come from)?
    When I asked if the fault was with the injector or the electric 12V timing solenoid they just said the fault was with the injector and could not tell me if there was a timing problem. When the car is out of gear and idling there does not appear to be any problem with the engine, everything running quietly/smoothly, no misfire even when increasing revs, all sounds good. This does not seem to me that the injector is a problem or the timing.
    Makes me wonder if the ECU computer needs resetting. Has anyone got any ideas?

      The main reason for black smoke from a Diesel engine is having a fuel mix that is to rich. If you can try modifying the air fuel mixture too have more air.

    • @CheekiScrubb
      @CheekiScrubb 5 років тому

      a bit late but if it puffs black smoke then i think its too rich of a mix probably a seapage on the nozzles causing excess fuel leaking into the combustion chamber or a misfire on the solenoids either way you should get the injectors checked out its probably because you were running diesel fuel with too low of a sulfur content not providing enough lubrication on the injectors hope you can get it fixed

    • @stevewaclo167

      One detail I don't understand is why does an injector (i.e.: LB7) exhibit a certain amount of return fuel flow, even when the injector is closed. This drawing does not show a path for return flow under that condition. One of the items overlooked (like the ball?) 😄.
