I went from the VIC-20 to the C64, then the Amiga 1000, a second-hand A500, then an A4000/030. I later got a used A1200 and CD32. Finally, I saw an Amiga 600 on display in an electronics store (Dixons or Currys, for your UK viewers) sitting unloved, and I managed to get it as a "manager's special" for £40. It wasn't complete, but it was still a good buy I thought. Its compact size endeared it to me, but I've barely used it. The A4000/030 remains my favourite Amiga, with the A1000 in second place. Opening my A600 just the other day, I find evidence of leaking caps to the left of the IDE connector, so I'm researching 'recap' videos.

Great video and good to see you back :) I really think it depends what you want from an Amiga, for me the A600 is perfect, even with its base 68000 it's an incredibly usable machine so long as you have some extra chip RAM (cheap as chips) and a bit of fast RAM. I use mine for DPaint and Games, it will very happily work on Blitz Basic projects as well as Scala at a pinch. Admittedly I am a very patient person. It's the absolute solid reliability of it in a small package that charms me, and because of that it's coming with me to Japan and is going to be pressed into some animation work :) That and the Amiga 600 I bought in 1993 at the age of ten is still with me and still works.

@@RETROCENGO Amiga is dead. I repeat: DEAD in 1994 (in 1990 whit Amiga 3000 IMHO). Unfortunately for all of us. This is classical sample when computer science/hobby became religion. There is nothing a modern computer cannot do infinite times better than the Amiga. It is sad but it is so. My interest in these glorious old machines is historic, but I am baffled by certain expressions about "old times". The Amiga is dead, computer technology is going on.

@@hakudo3162 computer technology is moving "backwards" unfortunaltely. Pc , laptops and phablets gets obsolete and deprecated every 6 months offering little to nothing in the technology field. An Amiga 500 is a masterpiece of brilliant engineering even nowdays. If you want to follow the new technology have in mind that new technology needs to be replaced in 6 to 12 months - call it a defect capacitor , call it a defect chip call it a underpowered processor...And yes this is not happening in the Amiga world even in 2021. I was a big box guy. I saw the big box units as "damm close to Unix" (in the way Amiga came across, acted + responded) high end graphical workstations long before I saw them as computers. Both the smaller ones also had many charms in many ways.
Commodore's refusal to Sun's proposal about the 3K... boggles the imagination.

I was a A500+ guy, (my 1st Amiga). I skipped the 600 as I had all the sidecar addons for my A500+, scic HD (40Mb), 2 meg fast ram, etc.. I later got a A2000 w/040 and a pc card. I wish I had held on to that equipment. I had so much fun with those computers back in the day.

We never had any expansions for our A500+, but I saw the sidecar ads in magazines and I thought they looked really good, extending the form of the case and giving the humble A500 the potential to become a very serious machine. The only downsides were, as I recall, fairly high prices and of course one needs quite a wide desk to accomodate them.

I had, still have a Amiga 2000 with a GVP GForce 68040 running at 33 Mhz. Along with that card was a 1.2GB SCSI hard drive. I used a GVP G-LOCK for overlaying text and graffics on a video using S-Video in and out. Also had a setup on the Amiga to do assemble video editing using my Hi-8 camera and Hi-8 deck. This was in about 92. I have a mod board on the Fat Agnus chip I think gave me more chip ram. I opened it up to look at the battery, I was happy to see there was no corrosion. The rest of the board looks good. I'll probably take the board out to clean. Then look into retro bright for the keyboard. Looking forward to turning it back on. Need to make a image of the HD.

My favorite is the A2000HD which I have owned since the early 1990's. I own all the Amiga Models except the A3000. The Amiga I use most is the A600 which has a Vampire in it and its a pure joy to use but I like the small form factor of it and it fits nicely in the corner of my L Shaped Desk. Now I am not into games but if I play games it will be either on the A600 or the A1200. The reason the A2000HD is my favorite is because its been with me forever and I used it to run a multiline BBS back in the day but also I used it for productivity applications, running Mac System 7 using an AMAX II and not so much for games but if I were to play a game it would either be Battle Chess or Lynx.

I got a 500 just for the nostalgia (I really wanted one as a kid) but the benefits of the A600 did make it a tempting alternative when I was looking for a machine to buy - mainly the hard drive interface and the PCMCIA slot. The PCMCIA slot is a pretty economical way to add good networking hardware to the Amiga (none of that "Plipbox" junk!) - but in the end I really just wanted to go back and get the machine I saw in the shop in 1988.

When I download something on a PC I just push it to the Amiga with TotalCmd built in FTP client. Then new 3.1.4 OS allows the full RAM of the Furia to be available despite using PCMCIA.

Something I've posed on Amibay, but would love your thoughts on whether my wee a600 with my Furia 020/40 should be treated to a Vampire 600 v2? I am on the wait-list (time unknown) and have a nice machine chugging along doing its thing. If and when my Vampire turn materialises, do I treat myself?
I know this is very subjective, but I only have one physical Amiga and the obligatory FS-UAE, WinUAE, AF, Amikit, but am pining after my AGA 1200T somewhat and would love to use some old AGA titles on the real thing (i know, I should buy an A1200 too! ).

      @oldtwinsna8347 2 роки тому

Wouldn't have happened though - remember the only reason Apple survived was because Jobs had the vision shifted from selling computers to selling crack (per license model on music) to children. Also, assuming that even the AAA Amiga ever made daylight, the Amiga OS was ill suited and the engineers were going to approach Microsoft to get Windows NT running on it.

    • @MartinMenge

The efficiencies and complete user experience of a full stack system and ecosystem just makes so much more sense for the majority of users. Perhaps an east asian company or conglomerate will enter that space. Sony could, Xiaomi seems to be heading that way. Both have their own "selling crack" or ipod entry point. There is market-space for at least two more Apple-like companies with similar market share, each chipping away at the Windriod mess.

I wonder, I mean, I'm sure there would be a way of doing it. Sure, it may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it could always be in a box like the numpads for the Atari 2600 (Video Touch Pad Keyboard Controller Numpad) was or like the Atari CX85, and thus be on the end of a cable...

Are those speakers Presonus Eris 3.5 ? I've always used traditional 2.1 PC speakers, and love the bass of a good subwoofer. But I recently saw these and have been seriously considering them. (They were boxed so I couldn't listen to them.) They look great and have good reviews. Would you recommend them for someone who is used to the low end bass of a 2.1 setup? How is the bass, the clarity and the overall sound on these? Is the bass deep and punchy enough for me to not miss the sub? Do the controls at the back allow you to turn up the bass and trebble to a noticabley higher level? I realise these are studio monitors with an intentionally flat sound, but I'm not a traditional audiophile and actually prefer boosted bass and trebble. Do you think I would I be happy with these? How do you feel about them? How do they compare to the Mackies you had before?

I still have a C64, 2 A500s, and a A4000 that still works today, with a 68030 pro accelerator card. I was never a games player and I think that's where commodore made a mistake, OK the C64, 600 and 1200, yes, But when they produced the later 3000, 4000 they should have put more effete on professional software like "Final Writer* a great word processor. don't think the A4000 was ever used to it full potential. Its a great shame. I moved over to mac as that's the closest next best thing, PC,s are just pants.

I had an IDE interface for my A500 that wasn't a "goofy sidecar", but rather a daughterboard sandwiched between the mobo and the CPU chip. Forgot what the brand name on the interface was.

Hello, your display case in the video looks like a widescreen (16:9) but somehow it looks like providing 4:3 (I guess it is better for Amiga) How did you do that? Is that a spec of display?

Tolga Yapıcı I use the OSSC to display the Amiga on the lcd monitor. It supports 4:3 displays.

The CD32 has a smaller footprint and a smaller motherboard than the A600, so the A600 is the second-smallest Amiga.

I bought a 500 new way back in 91, and it had an (ugly?) GVP sidecar with SCSI harddisk and 8mb ram, I always saw the 600 as a step sideways rather than forward with its 68000, it was no better than my 500 with its ECS chipset, the 1200 on the other hand was a step forward with its AGA chipset, though not a great step forward with its under done 68EC020, they should have gone 68030 minimum. I would not have been able to play F/A-18 without a numerical keyboard

I loved my Amiga 500 and then later 500 Plus. But I totally lost interest in the Amiga, when the 600 was released. Reason been is it rendered my very expensive GVP external hard drive useless, as this hard drive used the side expansion port that the Amiga 500 had, but the Amiga 600 didn't have.

There's a hack which allows the not particularly impressive System on a Chip (SOC) in a Playstation Classic to emulate an Amiga. A Raspberry Pi 3 can emulate a 68040 equipped A4000 at 4x speed. So, one of the cheap PCBs being used in the various classic mini game systems being released could be used with the same cheap SOC inside of a reproduction A600 case and produced for very close to or the same price as the C64 Maxi (TheC64) which I have zero interest in.
