  • These are the main reasons why you may need to kill your lawn and start over from scratch. Not everyone should kill off their lawn but if you have any of these issues in your yard then you should at least consider it.
    ► To fully kill off a lawn you will probably use glyphosate. This is a good 41% glyphosate option to use as it's pure and not watered down but it also already has a surfactant mixed in so it will be as effective as possible: shrsl.com/47fy4

    Can I kill the lawn, rototill it, add fill and then resod? Or do I need to remove the dead grass before rototilling?

    You have great information and videos. I’ve put off redoing my front yard because I’m “one of those” old hippie tree-huggers. You know, the ones who absolutely hate glyphosate with a passion. I have bagged and disposed of everything I mow (especially in the spring) to try and eliminate weed seeds from spreading HOWEVER, after years of natural products that do NOTHING against weeds, which is essentially my whole lawn, the weeds won and it’s time to swallow, cry and give it up. It’s going to HAVE to be the dreaded glyphosate products. By looking at lawns around me, it’s evident that I won’t be the only one using the stuff. Your videos show the options and procedures very well. Thank you !

    My fundamental was the builder had buried a layer of gravel a few inches below the surface which I should have found out by tilling the bare land but I just threw dirt over top.

    This next spring im spraying with chemicals 2 times spaced out 2 weeks apart. then burning. After that I will til my yard and level it out. Then sow bermuda seed. Purpose of restart is to lower the Ph and to have one grass type. Right now I have Hybrid and common bermuda, a little centipede from neighbors, st augustine, and zoysia. A couple of shady spots with Kentucky bluegrass

    Great video Brian! Last September I did a full renovation on my side and back yard due to large patches of unwanted bermuda. Before winter set in (helped along by a long NC fall), I had a great looking TTTf lawn. It was a lot of work, a lot of stress, battles with fungus and grubs, but for the most part, it looks pretty good. Wish I could attach pics!
    Enjoy your weekend!

    Does killing the lawn also kill the grubs? If not what should the steps be before having sod installed?

    Question about drainage. I bought a home 1 year ago (Independence Oregon) and have about 4" to 6" of standing water in some areas after a heavy rain. Are there any options of amending the soil without digging in a French drain.

    I disagree with the “too old cultivars “ reason.
    If that cultivar survived several decades, then I’m pretty sure it can survive anything:)
    It may not be as green as new ones though…

      Yes, that's a good distinction that I should have said. By old they certainly are able to stay alive year after year despite being not loved all the time but the issue is there are better versions of grass now that can look better for more weeks out of the year...often times with fewer inputs.

    Morning Brian,
    As always, great video. I’m starting to stock up on my lawn supplies before I see more price increases. Q. Brian, as you know, I dethatched, and overseeded my lawn and need to do a slight overseed again to fill in many bare spots. You suggested applying Milo as the starter fertilizer which I just stocked up on. Do you suggest dethatching the lawn again ? Also, what’s your thoughts on using Scotts lawn soil on some of the bare areas vs sand?

    What’s the quickest way to kill a lawn and restart if you have red dirt ?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 місяці тому

      I'm not sure I know what you mean by red dirt...are you talking red clay? Regardless, if it's clay or some other dirt Glyphosate is usually the fastest option other than a bulldozer. Sometimes you have to time the glyphosate well to get a full kill in 1-2 applications but some lawns may need 3-4 applications spread out over months if there are different grass types (or weeds) that are dormant at alternating times of the year. If you were to solarize the lawn from June through August under black plastic then you would probably have a good seed bed for planting in Sept; that's another option. Most just use glyphosate though once or twice over three weeks and call it a day. Glyphosate is the main active ingredient in RoundUp but can be bought generic or under many different brands.

    Hi sir, great video. How long do I need to wait after spraying glyphosate to put down nitrogen and potassium fertilizer? And how long do I wait to put seed down after the fertilizer? I’m brand new at this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    What do I use to kill the lawn so nothing grows back

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  6 місяців тому +1

      if you live where it's fairly dry then a lot of salt will keep things dead for a long time; still most anything will only kill stuff off for only a long time assuming you ever get rain. water on soil that has any moisture in the root zone will almost always start growing something given enough time. I suppose you could salt the area and then apply black plastic over the lawn for the Spring/summer to solarize the area (sorry I don't have a video on this). Basically the heat will get high enough to kill off any weed seeds. Then by fall you should have a salty dry ground with a bunch of roasted weed/grass seeds in the lawn. That should keep things dead for a really long time. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the video!! I live in Florida and have Bermuda grass creeping into my St Augustine so my plan is to rip up everything and put down provista St Augustine to have total weed control. The Company doing the work will be using a sod cutter going down about 4 inches but they said I could spray first to make sure all the Bermuda is dead being that cutting it up most likely won’t get it all. The only issue is I don’t really have several weeks for multiple applications of glyphosate due to the seasonal change. I know there’s some products that kill weeds / grass in hours, although not sure about full lawns. Can you think of a faster way I may be able to accomplish this? Or maybe since they’re cutting out the sod I don’t need an absolute total kill?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 місяці тому +1

      Best for this would be black plastic tacked down securely for at least 60 days during the hottest months of the year. It works because it kills off foliage, roots rhizomes and seeds of it gets hot enough for long enough.

    Another great video. What are your thoughts first kill all the lawn then tilling it to use the existing soil to "level" it as to bring as little to non top soil.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 роки тому +2

      It could work but native soil is usually harder to work with than topsoil brought in plus even if you leveled it you would almost assuredly see settling over time resulting a lawn that isn't flat. Tilling a full lawn is also a ton of messy work so it's not something I'd ever want to take on myself, if I wanted to do it I'd probably hire a landscaper crew with big equipment to do it for me...bringing leveling material just seems easier and cheaper to me.

    I have a question for you. Last night I sprayed glyphosate on my lawn and I got about 3/4 of the way done before it got dark but I went ahead and sprayed the final 2 gallons and finished up and crossed my fingers. Do you think this will work across the whole lawn and it should still die off? All but the last 1/4 I sprayed had dried but of course once it was dark the last tank seemed to just stay looking wet. Do you think I should go out and respray or wait a few days and see what happens?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 роки тому +1

      It should work fine. The glyphosate enters the leaf tissues night or day but the water it's mixed in may stay on the leaves wet. I doubt you'll have a problem with the app other than maybe missing an area because of spraying in the dark. Wait at least 10 days before expecting to see any major change, 15-18 should be the end result of the app. glyphosate won't burn the leaves so you have to wait for the systemic kill to show itself in the leaf tissues.

      Thank you for your quick response I really appreciate it! I have to say, from when I started getting into lawn care and loving my yard a couple years ago I have changed my viewing habits a lot. There are some channels best suited for certain people but the content you put out is almost always exactly what I’m looking for in terms of educating myself on a specific topic. I also have goals to do my lawn care pretty much the same as you with as many organic products as possible and have a lawn that needs little to no weed control and stays green through the summer months. So I guess this is the long way of me saying thank you for your efforts and the videos you put out for people like me who really want to learn the right way of caring for their lawn!
