In this guitar lesson, Steve Stine is going to show you how to play the #1 most important chord progression for blues guitar.
It’s called the “12-bar blues,” and it’s used in thousands of blues songs. In fact, most blues songs use this chord progression or one very similar to it.
So check out the video and try it for yourself. Because after this video, you’ll have the know-how to create your own blues progression from scratch.

This reminds me of most songs by Cinderella, Tom Keifer being one of my favorite guitar players (and most underrated in my opinion).
There is NOTHING like good ol' blues. Thanks man for all your work and your teaching skills are really something. Keep it up. I'm trying to learn a little playing again after a very long time.

This is why Steve is great. Because you watch most other lessons and they just gloss over the theory for 6 secs then focus on training the standard sounding blues riffs.
Whereas Steve rather takes the time to break it down in a way that a beginner can grasp the theory in a way that makes it far easier to mentally get to the house of blues from open cowboy chord country lol

I started researching the blues because I’m interested in being a music producer. I honestly didn’t expect it to be so straightforward. I think my only problem with this is the bar chords don’t sound quite as flashy as the dominant chords since you’re just playing regular major 7th chords.

    • @erikaw7767
      @erikaw7767 Рік тому

i hear that, but there are ways to make the bar chords more snappy... where you can start a strum on the bass notes and up stroke on the high notes, its really nice when playing lose. also you can mix the bar with 7ths.

I'm a bit late but, you can either think off doing a normal A chord, remove the index finger and do the chord with the other fingers. Then move the shape up a fret or two, and do a Barr with your index like normal! You can also move away the three fingers and do it with a barre on the ringfinger.

So you're saying that to change the key, you change the 1 chord to a chord of the key you want to be in, and then from 2 to 5 it starts over from A to D, in which case you'd play for instance key of F you'd play F(1) and then C(4) and then D(5)?

Thanks for watching, Justin! To answer your question... not quite. :-)
This is one of those times when knowing the notes on your guitar can be a big help. Here's a video Steve did that shows how to learn the notes fast: ua-cam.com/video/rDfw2jRF898/v-deo.html
To answer your question, the key of F is based on the F major diatonic scale, which has the notes:
      F G A Bb C D E
So, for the key of F, the 1-4-5 chords are F, Bb ("B flat)," and C.
In the key of G, based on the G major diatonic scale:
      G A B C D E F#
      The 1, 4, 5 chords are G, C, and D.
      Hope this makes sense! :-)

Ah okay, so aside from knowing the starting note which dictates the key you're in, you don't necessarily even need to know the order of the notes that follow the first note since you're playing the same shape up and down the board. So C chord in key of F is same as D in key of G

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  2 роки тому

Yes, the barre chords follow the same pattern on the fretboard, no matter what key you're in. (And I apologize, my G major scale example got put in the wrong part of my previous comment somehow. I put it where it was supposed to go.)
So yes, you don't necessarily need to know the notes to play a 1 4 5 chord progression with barre chords, but being real, as a guitarist the more you know about notes on the fretboard, the better. :-)

I'm sorry for this long ass comment, but I feel this is something that needs to be addressed seriously.
Isn't it kind of limiting to play shape of A chords the way you do?
Like, you cheating on the shape of A using two fingers, not the A chord itself but bar shape of A on D chord and the other one that uses the A shape.
I don't blame you, the shape of A really sucks.
But still, two fingers on a bar chord, won't that make you a rhythm player?
Nothing wrong with that, rhythm is key, but I think most guitarist want to play lead stuff, yeah?
Won't this be extremely limiting as a blues player as you cannot do taps, puls or slides in the middle of chords?
Like you can't really make it bluesey without the funny sounds in the middle of things.
The way I see it, playing the shape of A chords like you do here, is absolutely not what you want to be teaching beginners.
You are teaching the foundation to someone who doesn't know any better, beginners don't know why finger placement is important and that is why you need to teach it correct the first time.
Speaking from my own experience, I cheated a lot when I was a beginner, simply because I didn't know and nobody told me.
Over the years I developed bad habits as I was trying to make up for the fact that I didn't play chords with correct finger placement.
I had to unlearn muscle memory and half of everything I knew about playing the guitar, that is not easy, nor fun.
Ofc, if you are missing fingers then yeah sure, make due with what you got, but you don't seem to be missing any fingers?
    Other than that, good stuff!
