Have always loved doing this on accent walls and including a vaulted ceiling. Adds so much character to the design of a room. Great job as always Josh 👍🏻
Oh that would look awesome on a vaulted ceiling David! It’s interesting how much better room looks at the little bit of extra work. Thanks for stopping by!
You can use a circular saw with perfect lines if you do not have a miter saw. Just use a quick square on your cuts as a guide. I usually use a piece of painter tap on my cut line as well to prevent any chipping of the finish.
@@Faruk651 or a homeowner/DIY. If anyone identifies with that, just make sure you use a new blade, and you cut from the back side so the rotation of the blade is forcing the teeth into the front. This way, the fibers of the wood have a backer, and there will be minimal chipping.
I have a couple of questions: 1) What if the wall is slightly bowed out? 2) Also, would you still need to stagger the lines if you had a space that was 6 ft across? My thought would be to cut all of the boards to 6 ft and install.
Need to add a spark guard around that plug per code. "ARLINGTON BE1 SINGLE-GANG BOX EXTENDER". Looks and turned out great, like the style, looks expensive though.
Came here to say that. Glad I checked first. ;-) There are so, so many shiplap installs on UA-cam where they don't use extenders. Dangerous and a code violation.
Love your advice here. I'll be doing this soon. The only thing I would change is the lines between the boards. I would just alternate it every row. Less cuts the better. Your way there's more cuts. I get why you did it.
Everything looks good. Except you don't just nail all over the face of the boards. You mark your studs, then put power grab adhesive on the back of the board, then only nail through the lip that will be covered. If absolutely necessary, you can pin nail the top bord to the lip underneath. Why would you want to see all of the nails? Even if you're using finish nails. You'll need to fill and sand every one. Also, you must put a box extension/spark shield on the outlet boxes. It's code.
Do you not watch the whole video? He did mark all the studs. And then he chose not to do power grab since he might want to remove it later and doesn’t want to completely destroy the drywall. Once you spackle and sand the nail holes you don’t see them at all if done right
So rare to find installer starting from top to bottom. Home Depot's video shows from top down also. Eliminating the gap by the ceiling with molding for a clean look could be worth holding up each board when nailing. Some prefer to leave the joint showing up for a staggered look. I am trying to weigh all the prons and cons before starting the project. Any suggestions will be appreciated............ Thanks for taking time to detail the work for an excellent finish.
Great video! If you were installing shiplap around a door, would you take the door off and put in a new jamb or would you just extend the current jamb somehow? Thanks.
Well done Josh. I do like the black, not sure what the boss will say. We are building our own home this summer and I will be using a lot of your excellent tips. I know we talked about doing one wall in our kitchen Shiplap. Not sure if it will be while or a colour. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything so well.
Excellent video. I’m doing shiplap install this week. I was concerned about all those nail holes bc despite spackling them and sanding, you may still see them after paint is applied. Are you gonna add base mould and side mould (verticals) to this wall? Nice job. 👍
Great Video and nice explanation. I wanted to tackle similar project for my living room and this video timing is perfect. What type of material (shiplap) you used? I saw in description but couldn't find link for material.
Found you channel by looking for bathroom renovations and I glad I came across you videos. Love the work you do! Could you do a tutorial on changing bullnose corners to square corner beads?
Going to add shiplap to our existing fireplace TV area. Going to wrap it around an outside corner. Haven’t seen anyone else miter a ship lap for a corner. Anyone have a strong opinion on whether that will work?
Is the process the same for ceilings or are there other steps in order to avoid sagging between the trusses? My trusses are about 24 on center and I'm worried that the gap is too large
Why butt cut at the joints? a 45 would make that joint less visible. And I would always put one of the nails on the tongue so that way, you'll have half as many nail holes to fill
Yes, but if you decide to paint it white in the future you will have no option except to spray paint to cover the black background. That’s the problem with shiplap.
Would have used a 22 1/2 degree miter at butt ends and painted the raw edge before install....sorry..........Window casing, when ripping the true width, cut the back side that goes against the window leaving the finish edge for new casing and paint the raw edge before install.......
3:48 not a good idea when the corner is drywall and has mud, another reason is studs maybe dog legged and out of plumb. I would have done what you did at the bottom or used a 6 foot level from point of reference. Also sockets nowadays have 2 separate power sources thus 2 different breakers, be sure to check the upper and lower before attempting to remove the socket. Just a suggestion :)
Seriously Dude! 👎🏼 about ‘shiplap!’ geesh, I am sick of hearing that term. The DIY shows all get ‘gah gah’ over shiplap. It’’s ridiculous! EFF the freakin shiplap! Love your content, but this stuff gets under my skin. *rant over*. I’m dun now. 😐
Hey Brian! The concept of using black felt works great for standard boards but in this case where you have shiplap you won’t see anything behind the boards other than where the laps are. That’s why you should paint the laps before you install the boards. Hope that helps!

Very nice! What sheen was the paint? Semi-gloss or satin?
She's very smart. Glad you listened to her. Great example for men.
I just nailed into the lip of the shiplap. It holds fine and it doesn't have holes you need to fill in the shiplap.
Doing a bath remodel currently and your channel has been invaluable for a novice like me. Great info and production value!
Looks good. I would put the bottle nail in the lip of the board so you only have to do half the filling and sanding.
Beautiful explanation
Good job sir.

Yes you could for sure use that method. It’s just a lot quicker and less room for error when you use a miter saw. Thanks for watching!
You are a hack if you use a circular saw for finish work.
@@Faruk651 Your a hack if you DON'T know how to use a circular saw for finish work friend.

I was just thinking on doing this on top of my fireplace. Perfect timing. Thanks!

Ficou lindo, amo! Absolutely gorgeous. It is noticeable how your love what you do from your highly detail explanation. Thank you, Mr.
You differently know what you’re doing. Thank you
Do you think I can use my 16ga angled finish nailer to install shiplap around a fireplace?

Exactly. I'm paying extra to see nails every where? REALLY. Do not like at all

Thanks Josh. Those instructions were terrific. I feel really prepared to do an install today
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you as well! I hope your new year is amazing!

Working with wood is a wonderful and easy thing, especially electricity here in Africa or Europe, everything is on clay and concrete
That is good to know. I’m sure construction is much different in other countries than here. Thanks for watching!

It is just standard shiplap that can be found in any home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot. I hope that helps!
Looks great Josh . I’d like to make a driveway gate with a ship lap design. Great video and great channel.❤
What did you use to extend the electric outlets and covers?
They are called box extenders or Spark guards. I hope that helps!
Very informative.
Great video thanks!
How do the outlet receptacles fit in flush with the wall ? Are the screws backed out the thickness of the board ?
Wonderful 💯💡🤠
Thank you Anthony! I appreciate you watching my videos
Found you channel by looking for bathroom renovations and I glad I came across you videos. Love the work you do! Could you do a tutorial on changing bullnose corners to square corner beads?
Before installing it's probably a good idea to paint the wall behind with one coat just to be safe.
Could you share details on spray gun and if you thinned paint ? Thanks
Great work! 😍
nice work
I appreciate that! Take care
Going to need to add spacers on the outlet boxes to pull the plug out a bit....
What do you do if your ceiling is uneven when you start at the top?
Going to add shiplap to our existing fireplace TV area. Going to wrap it around an outside corner. Haven’t seen anyone else miter a ship lap for a corner. Anyone have a strong opinion on whether that will work?
Did you prime or just paint and did you sand the wood?
What kind of paint gun did you use . It look like less over spray

Thanks for coming to my UA-cam channel! Definitely more valuable long form content here to watch. Enjoy!
How would you install in on a metal framed wall?
Why butt cut at the joints? a 45 would make that joint less visible. And I would always put one of the nails on the tongue so that way, you'll have half as many nail holes to fill
How did you move the outlet out with the Shiplap? And have you ever done Shiplap on a ceiling?

Sockets nowadays have two power sources? That is complete bullshit. I don't know where you're from but that is not a thing.
💪✌️
How all is well! Thanks for watching!
Never do butt joints!!! 45° your joint ffs!!!

Hehehe, new constructions are terrible nowadays. Ask me about it. Terrible walls. Not leveled at all.
Don't waste money on paint take roofing felt put it on black side out it's done at 30 seconds and he's probably saved $80 in paint
