There are so many dedicated enthusiasts in the UK, otherwise a lot of these cars would just be recycled. The classic car scene is really a family enterprise.

Hi from Ireland. We visited Mathewsons in Thornton a few years ago. We met Derek then, a real gentleman. Great video.

I’ve not met Derek yet but I have met Dave, Jack and his lookalike younger brother Josh at Hexham after the Kielder Stages. Also met Charlie and Paul and Angela at Anglesey circuit three times when I was marshalling on rallies there. I was there when Charlie won the juniors championship in 2023 and got to congratulate Paul. That was amazing and emotional.
Also met Dave there at the Lee Holland stages but unfortunately the car gave up after one stage. He came over to talk to me during the day as I was there as a radio marshal. He gave me a Mathewsons Motorsport cap and coffee mug.
You couldn’t wish to meet a nicer family.

A really enjoyable watch, thanks Matt. Yes please try to do more of these. It’s good to see you having a chat with another car enthusiast as a change up from your usual solo to camera videos. It was an interesting whistle stop of some cool classics, I loved that Lagonda. Maybe next time you could spend a bit more time focusing in on a couple of favourites, if they’ll let you take a seat in them.

An interesting feature and great to see your interaction with Derek. Some mutual respect here I think. These types of classic gatherings are great and they can broaden your knowledge and perhaps open up new opportunities. 1990s and early 2000s cars are gathering interest and are still relevant to modern buyers - not just hot hatches either.

I remember when that Lagonda came out, it was out of this world beautiful and featured in all the newspapers, The futuristic look of the interior has not aged well as it looks so bland versus anything else Aston Martin has done. It seemed that way yeah. Sad times that he’s left his wife for one of the office girls who is 26 years his junior… who can be seen loitering in the background during the whole interview with @highpeakautos in this vid. That combined with the revelation Matt’s uncovered here that they’ve only been going since 2011 and not forever and a day as the telly show would suggest means the whole thing is a bit sullied for me now tbh 😔 Really sad because I genuinely loved the show and thought exactly what you did… family, wholesome, genuine stuff. Really enjoyed that video being a classic Jaguar enthusiast. It was bred into me from a early age as my late father had a Jaguar Mark 2 in the 60’s which ferried me to school in Edinburgh. Back then most professionals drove Jags and German cars were nowhere to be seen. The XJ6 is a lovely example but the 2.8 version of the XK engine has a bad name for reliability as Derek hinted at. It was rapidly discontinued to be replaced by the 3.4 litre which was reintroduced and far more robust.
