@MrShukaku1991 yeah mate 100% You could get something decent I guess at least you have black and white. Box art is a stretch though. I know im not good enough for that
The problem is it's all horrifically overpriced tools, and they dropped plenty of stuff from the last box to include some basic supplies, that also limits what people want to try to paint
I bought the Recruit Set plus the Paint and Tools set to get into the hobby. I think bundling it together is a great idea. I kinda got Leviathan to get the two combat patrols so Ultimate Edition might have been a better choice for me, but it's nice to have the full rulebook and my kids are obsessed with the Dreadnought and Screamer Killer.
I mean, the screamer killer has to be the coolest bug in the box amd the dreaddy has huge laser cannons and rockets. The kids were destined to love them.
Man, the Warcry Team seem so passionate and creative. Everything they’ve done is just so good. And it worked for me! I have finally decided to jump in and start playing that game. It has some of the best and most interesting models and rulesets out in the GW range.
Picked up Leviathan last night. Came home from work to find my Artis Opus texture pallet and dampening pad had arrived. Then I turned on UA-cam and found a new Models and Memories... This weekend is off to a good start!
I guess all the small box games do like Blitzbowl and Bladeborn f.e. I got Space Marine the boardgame, the new Underworlds Starter Set and the new combat patrol set on preorder and Im intrigued to see if they handle it the same way.
I would say can’t wait for the orks to get the limelight, but I GUESS some of the Eldar’s models are older than me so I GUESS that they should get it more
The new Warcry starter set war bands appear to be around 600 points each, so there might be some small rule changes for smaller games. I want it as I like the terrain and was already considering getting a 2nd Crimson Court for use in other games.
GW actually did release that Warcry mat in a 4x4 version back in early AOS, I believe 1st edition around when they also release the rules for Skirmish. Its been OOP for years now and it wasn't cardboard or neoprene but cloth. To this day I regret not buying it.
The CMON A Song of Ice and Fire core and army boxes come with plastic inserts that hold all the minis, cards and dice and can be reused. Out of all the tabletop miniature games I've collected they've been the only company to do it
@@beanns6632 Despite having the core and Night's Watch boxes I haven't played yet. A friend that I trust said they found the rules fun and easy and enjoyed the movement trays. I like the sculpts and I'm not put off by the repeated use of them for the no name, main troop units
At first glance I was meh on the small one but its actually a really good first box. The mid one is nice, just a solid collection of minis and at least the board is card and not paper. The big one... the terrain is a huge letdown... 2 combat patrols is nice but the old terrain was so much more interesting.
Oh, I don’t like the paints and clippers mainly because it guarantees this will cost more than the box of gaunts. In 9th you could buy this box’s counterpart for basically the cost of the Necron warriors.
I love this Warcry starter set, but I'm subscribed to the new Stormbringer magazine, and we just got the truth seekers a few issues ago :-( I'm only a few months into the hobby so don't really want to start duplicating models already 😅
16:50 I literally did something extremely similar with the Necromunda dark uprising box set. I made cross sections with the cardboard from the amazon package that the set came in. Then I decided to separate the gangs from one another, as well as the terrain. It would be convenient if there were plastic or fold-out cardboard slats that they gave you in boxes like this skirmish boxset. Or maybe even in bigger boxes like Kill Team, who knows? It would be nice to have that extra storage space for specialist games.
Funny you should mention it. I'm currently trying to 3d print some box inserts for underworld to do exactly that. Its an actual board game and I want to treat it as such.
The bit about the Kruleboyz is very funny to me because I'm very not into the big bulky standard Orks, but I ADORE the lanky slimy Kruleboyz aesthetic.
I love the idea of the introductory set and how it actually contains every aspect of the hobby, from the start, in one box. From painting to playing. Actually thinking of buying it to finally actually start my own journey into 40K, because it's a good and easy way to start something and get into it completely. It's great value for a beginner, even better than the last edition i think.
14:00 Oh yeah. You mean that mat that had a stone strip leading to a (hexagonal?) Base foundation towards the one corner? I forgot the name of it as well. It was also surrounded by orange slag lined tiles leading up to/around the strip. I can see it in my thinking meat right now as I'm typing this. There was also the lunar moon base mat if I can recall correctly.
I love the fact that Hero Quest comes with packaging where it goes goes back into its place! Makes things so much easier for the kids and me. Just get it down and I know where everything is.
I have an official GW neoprene mat. It's called "Battle Mat: City Ruin" and has a weird size at 4'x4' when their table size was still 6'x4' at the time. Unsurprisingly, it didn't take off...
I think what seals the deal for me in the Ultimate Edition box is that the two FULL battle patrols are included in it for Nids and Marines. Its basically a kill team box (full teams + terrain) but for big 40k.
Plus cost wise knowing GW prices these boxes, its going to be slightly cheaper than the two patrols put together, plus you get the terrain thrown in for "free". Its an awesome set for beginners.
I think that GW make their 40k boards so dull so they don't take your attention from models when advertised. On the other hand the board for Warcry is very busy because there is only a handful of models
I actually just got a little over 2,000 points of space Marines for a little over 300 on eBay, 6 characters including Logan Grimnar and Bjorn the fell handed, 30 grey hunters for troops and a redempter dreadnought, some thunderwolf cavalry and a few other units all really nicely painted. I've had some space Marines sitting around on sprue for awhile and recently picked up a pair of drop pods so I can't wait for them to get here so I'm very happy with that deal and I can't wait for them to get here! But I was actually looking for nids and necrons when I found that one, didn't end up finding any deals for them, i was the only bidder on the space wolves which is probably the only reason I got such a good deal there honestly.
Battletech Box Sets come like you're talking about, they don't quite have vacu-form plastic to hold everything, but everything in each of the boxes will fit back into the box. The standees are really nice too because they just collapse back down to 2D. Beginner box is basically a board game hiding the fact that is gateway dru... I mean game into the MechWarrior/Battletech universe ;)
That intro box might be the best box set GW has ever produced to try and get folks in the hobby. I sort of did it this way in 9th. I bought the recruit edition and both SM and Necron paint sets for like $110 to start the hobby back in 9th. They really hit the mark with this one. I think a solid $70 would be perfect for this set
The thing I find odd is that it's a one-off purchase, where as if you have brought the old one and wanted to expand your army you could buy another, but there is no need for more paint or tools so a second purchase wont make sense. I wonder if they have accommodated for this in their stocktake. But yea great for newbies or people after new paints.
PLEASE buy the intro set and paint it using only the paints supplied!! I'm wanting to get something for my Nephew (13 years old) as he is really into art and drawing and I'd think he'd love 40k... But I'd love to see how it turns out with only 5 paints!! I'd probs end up getting him a wash or contrast paint to go with this into set, but would love to see this video if you decide to do it :)
The starter set is great value imo, just found it on amazon for AU$127 and I split it with a mate who wanted the Nids. so AU$63.50 for roughly $210 worth of Space Marines was good in my book.
The box including the paints and tools is awesome , wish I had that when I was getting in. Terrain is one of those things I’ve never thought about buying since both my local GS and the time I went to an official GW store both owners at them said it’s not really worth seeking out on its own to buy when 3D printers exist for the same price as some terrain sets
Hey Jay, rewatching because why not... :) Interesting fact, the Space Marine game available at Target for $40 actually has a 22"x30" double-sided real board in it instead of the paper ones included here. Weird isn't it? If they can afford to put that in a $40 game that includes 1 Lt. Titus, 20 'gants + 2 ripper swarms, why didn't they include board version in these? For the Warcry set, I have the models already but I wouldn't mind the terrain. Hopefully they'll list it separately in the future.
My very first set of minis was the command edition for 9th that I got for Xmas and omg I loved it especially since gw sent my grandma 2 of em for the price of 1!!!
Using more colours for the print would mean needing more ink, or different one A mat with only slight difference on the brown is IMO cheaper to mass produce
While Jay was listing the things he wished wargames would do to fit everything into the box from 16:16 onwards, my eyes just kept drifting to the Battletech: Alpha Strike box set sitting on my shelf. Which for the record has kinda done much of what he's describing...
I got my spacemarine combat petrol team using the medium starting box. I traded the tyranids at my local game shop for the Librarian i needed to finish it.
I honestly think the Recruit box is kind of a newbie trap. Sure, it's convenient to have "everything" you need in a single box but the value proposition is lower than 9th edition's Recruit set. You miss out on the two extra leaders and instead get paint, a brush, and nippers. For the paint it's much better to just buy the singles you want for your scheme. New players unknowingly get forced down the Ultramarines route and may come to regret painting them in those colors when they start to actually build out their army. GW brushes and tools are both exceedingly overpriced for what they are and can be easily purchased from anywhere else for cheaper. A pack of cheap brushes and nippers from Hobby Lobby is 10 bucks. I don't disagree that it's nicely convenient but I don't think that makes up for the loss in value. The Elite set is actually kind of insulting because they purposefully kept out the Librarian and Barbgaunts to prevent you from getting the two full combat patrols. They put them in the Command squad because of course they did. Bluh.
Personally the new ultimate starter set appeals to me, if only because i bought two of the old so the new terrain will add more diversity to my collection
I'm going to have to grab that first 10thE starter set. Did some eBay pick & choose purchasing and I don't have the Flamethrower Marines yet. Weirdly I could definitely use more Mcgragge Blue. Somehow I finally used all of my previous pots up since I started last June. And then 10 more termagants as icing on the cake. After that, I should be good with Leviathan! Now that new Warcry one? I will be pre-ordering ASAP!
I think it is going to be a good deal with the paints...My biggest problem is it hard to fine in my local store. GW supply the Local own stores!!!! I also have enough terrain right now so if the price right I am going get Warcry set.
The Introductory Set with the paints and tools is okay but at £32 (via 3rd party stores) isnt the best deal. Sure the tools and paints are a good inclusion but at 15 models (5 Marines and 10 Nids) its still not worth it for incorrect paints and tools you can get cheap. The Starter set is actually a really good deal, its £65 on the GW site or £52 on discount sites. It has enough models to actually play a game of 40k and the models are a great value. The Terminators and Psychophage alone make up that price. Insanely good deal for a starter set and reminds me of the old start collecting sets (which were also a good deal) with some tools and a few paints you could get a reasonably good intro for £80 and actually play some games.
Jay: “When you’re online there is only one shape that truly matters… SQUARES!” Jay when talking about the new starter box terrain: “It’s just squares!”
Frankly, I wish they just included a Lieutenant and a Lictor in exchange for the paints and brush, its kinda boring to start out with 5 basic marines and basic bugs, slap a cool character in there to spice it up. Keep the nippers though, that's a really nice addition.
I fell asleep to this video three times now. English is not my mother's tongue so I can perfectly relax heading about my beloved hobby. And now I'm watching it completely to actually get what this video is about.im so excited for the new warcry starter set. My jump from Bladeborn to Warcrcy. Eob is my favorite UA-cam channel. #eobsleepclub
They picked the weakest terrain to include in the big box because they need to move it somehow. The terrain is not moving on its own but bundle it with terminators and it will fly off the shelf.

Building and painting the small starter set only with the box content paints sounds like a cool challenge
I was thinking the same. Could be a good video trying to do it with a few sets new and old.
Do it @eonsofbattle
Yeah. The gaunts should be decently easy, having an off white and purple in the box, but the space marines are going to need some work.
@MrShukaku1991 yeah mate 100%
You could get something decent I guess at least you have black and white. Box art is a stretch though. I know im not good enough for that
It's a really bad brush from my experience. I guess that part of the challenge
Challenge? I’m doing that right now with the Necrons and Space marines starter set because I’m new to the table top 😭
Jay: “It’s fiiiine…”
Narrator: “But it was not fine, and his disgust was evident.”
the starter coming with paints and tools now just makes it objectively better than having to pay like 100 euros just to see if you like painting minis
Yeah i think if you've never painted warhammer before its a good start.
The problem is it's all horrifically overpriced tools, and they dropped plenty of stuff from the last box to include some basic supplies, that also limits what people want to try to paint
As long as it ends up being cheaper than buying the Recruit Edition and Paints & Tools set. (About $105 CAD) otherwise the deal won't be as evident.
@@Cerderius yeah i feel like the intro set would be at least a good bit cheaper, would be ridiculous otherwise
For painting, you could've always just got either the assault intercessors and paint set or the Necrons and paint set.

It would be cool to try painting the boxart with just the paints included in the new starter set. See how achievable it actually is.
I remember when working for GW I had to paint the 8th Ed starter set using only the paints you could get in the starter boxes. It was fun 😅😂
Bwuh? The starters before 10th didn't come with paints. Did you mean the paint/tools set or paint set with like 3 models sold separately?
@@souledgar yes I did mean that. They were still starter set 😅

Jay when talking about the new starter box terrain: “It’s just squares!”
You could incorporate that terrain into your ad read for that company: Terrainspace, or is it Squarespace? I'm not sure...
The space marine adventure board games have trays to put everything in.
Ah, an eons of battle vid posted a 3am, lovely
My favorite game to initiate people to wargames is summuners war. Easy to explain, ballenced and variety of factions
i just finished my dreadfleet box ;)
Superb as always Jay!
I actually used the paper mat and it lied flat. I still use it for teaching newbies the basics too. I guess I'm lucky
The new terrain is less weak once you realize that is 100% a field base from Starship Troopers. You can't change my mind.
Paint the marines military grey, the nids in warrior bug colours and all set with starship troopers vibe.
They picked the weakest terrain to include in the big box because they need to move it somehow. The terrain is not moving on its own but bundle it with terminators and it will fly off the shelf.
Gw did a few vacuformed inserts with the fireteam (mini killteam) and bladeborn (mini warcry)games
For Gorechosen too.
