Is there some way to blend the two modes together somehow? I know you have spoken on this before and also written about it in your book hidden. That some of he mega churches can pull off a blended model because they use paid staff or “interns” to run their programs leaving members free to focus on small group mission.
I don't like to speak in absolutes so I'd never say there is no way, but from experience I have tried hybrids and they all failed. There's multiple reasons for that but what you mentioned is one of them. Personally, I encourage conventional churches to be the best kind of conventional church they can be. This is what my new ebook "Story Church" is all about. (Note: there are limits to this as well. Fundamentalist, ultra conservative, high-control churches can't usually be helped no matter what approach you try because the issue is not creativity or mission, it's an abusive culture.) You can become the best version of yourself working within your inherent limits as a traditional church. And I encourage missional networks to be the best they can be within the contours of their own structure. But blending the two -- never worked for me. Ive spoken to other missional church planters who say the same thing. Going back to St Patrick's work with the Celts and forward to today, the missional model and traditional model never harmonise well for a long period of time.
House churches is how everything started. We should not judge or condemn the community of those worshiping God, in their own platforms. We should encourage them to grow! And that’s how Christianity works.
Yes! We want a spirit of collaboration and mutual empowerment - not condemnation. We can all learn and work together - even conventional churches - to build the kingdom ❤
