This is the quicker way. Make sure all wheels are on the towel when you do this. If you don't, it will wear down the track and wheels. I do it with IPA, Q-tip or pipe cleaners.

Thank you for the feedback and kind words! Yeah I have tried a lot of methods myself too, even tried expensive options and nothing seemed to work better than this! Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to chat anytime!

I usually just put my locos in a foam cradle , power it up and use a fiberglass polishing pencil to polish the wheels. After that i also polish the commutator on the motor and the motors brushes.

Thank you! I am doing my first maintenance, clearly something I have put off, on Athearn Genesis GP9. Unlike your loco, the wiring inside remains attached to the hood, so I do not separate the hood from the chassis fully. I do not see connectors I could disconnect, only solder connections. But, I still should be able to perform the basic maintenance. Do I have it correct?

Yep you’re correct! You can pull it up enough to get your lubricant in there. The nice thing about Athearn is if you grease the gears in the trucks it will also lubricate the work gear on top of the trucks. So you won’t have to take off too much for the shell or anything. If you run into problems or questions let me know!

I like putting the small TCS keep alive in all my locos. KA1 I think. Great video!

Yes I do too! The amount of times it's helped me with bad turn outs is so worth the $20 or so they cost.

I have an atlas ho master silver series gp40 that I have no idea how to get into the trucks to clean the pickup contacts on

Atlas can be a pain, so from what I know of those the trucks have a bottom cover over them that has 4 clips (2 on each side). Gently pry those up just a hint so they life over the clips, if you do it on one side usually you can just take the whole cover off without doing it on the other side. Once that cover is off the truck side frames slide offend you'll see the pickups that are on the axle ends. If you're not in a big hurry about it I'd be happy to make a video on it for you here in the next week or two.
