I am so appreciative of the fact that they specifically said he didn't get lucky and talked about all the training he has done to be prepared for this exact situation.
Of the century. I haven't been surfing for long but it's the most brutal Wipeout i seen so far contending closely with a the guy who got shot out of the Nazaré wave i believe... I think it's the guy that broke his back.
Not too confident it would be. The safety aspect has come so far. Still...what bravery, what commitment, what poise, stunning performance by these young men. Mind blowing.
To be honest no, this guy hit the water and it was worst case scenario getting the wind knocked out then getting pushed deep probably 6-10 feet underwater with your board tombstoning right below the surface so pulling the cord on the inflatable vest is a life saver. How could he have swam back up to the surface after getting completely winded and then imagine how turbulent the water is after that wave smashed.
I went out on 18 foot day , man that day was a bad day got held for couple more waves with my leash snapping . Only thing was hold my breathe see which way I floated that’s what saved my life lay your body out like air glider it will help which direction you need to go
I watched that wipeout a bunch of times yesterday. Great wreck, lifetime hilite reel for the guy. I cast it to my big TV so my wife could see it. She was not stoked.
Santa Cruz surfer here. I have so much respect for Ty. I’m not even *half* as skilled as he is. I was just at Mavericks watching from shore and was amazed. I hope Ty is safe out there. I’d hate for what happened to Mark Foo happen to him. Same for his freediving adventures. I hope he’s careful. I knew Jay Moriarty and he died while freediving.
WOw .... That's the worst .... Good you had the inflatable on ... Years ago I had a WIPE OUT at STEANER LANE and the only way I could get back to the surface for air was to go hand over hand on my leash cord

Well thank god you’re appreciative
Now I can go on with my life.. wow
Major respect to this young man!
Gnarly .. great his training paid off
Probably a contender for Wipeout of the Year
But he wasn't even close to dying so he'll probably don't win it.

@@Ultorvindex That was dumb..
He got the best waves of the day after that wipeout.
Everyone who wears a vest needs to say, "...thanks Uncle Shane..." 🤙
💯 no air in your lungs = no survival without that tech 🙏
Best back flips gymnastics I have ever seen and on a monster wave. 10 out of 10. This guy deserves a gold medal.
So heavy. Much respect.
The implementation of the inflation vests has saved so many lives for sure.

"Whoooaaaaaa woooaaaaaa wa waaaaaaaaa " 😂😂 Love this song, it's on my 70s playlist.. my car music...
ohhhh how i love and miss harry!!!
Hats off to Ty for going back out! Never saw a wipe out as bad as that!!!
the inflatable vest definitely helped
Last time I fell off a 4 story building I also walked away relatively unscathed. 😂😂
What a legendary moment
You think this would be survivable without the inflation suit ?
Not too confident it would be. The safety aspect has come so far. Still...what bravery, what commitment, what poise, stunning performance by these young men. Mind blowing.
Being that he had the wind knocked out of him I doubt it would have ended well without the safety gear!

Definitely wouldn’t want to find out. Dude put the work in to make sure he could survive though
It wouldn't be survivable had he lost consciousness, either, because then he wouldn't have pulled the cord.
Yessah Maui No Ka Oi💪🏽🤙🏽
This is an exceptional young man. Big cojones!
Nuts to think guys did this no leash with birdwells god bless co2 vests
Awesome wave and ride and just as awesome wipeout. 10 out of 10! 🌊
“You train to survive the wipeout, you don’t train to…”. That was a GREAT quote! It applies to everything in life. Well done! 🤙🙏
Not sure you’d be unscathed if you hit a brick wall at 80? Glad he got some more waves after the wipe out.
I love that thisbis news in Hawaii and i like the lingo.

The epitome of rag-dolled.
Mahalo!
This wipeout was a little more worst than Makua Rothman's wipeout but Makua's wave was a lot bigger.
What and where is he studying in California? All good wishes for 2025 and beyond.
Glad you're okay
Dude.....awesome wipeout!!!
Nothing awesome about it..
Getting slammed to the bottom of the ocean like a rag doll is not my idea of a good time.
It’s not his either.
He will certainly be ready for Mavricks when he gets back.
I watched that wipeout a bunch of times yesterday. Great wreck, lifetime hilite reel for the guy. I cast it to my big TV so my wife could see it. She was not stoked.
I’ll do the same and my wife totally misses the point and will comment on how nice and sunny it is there or how she wants to go on vacation …..
Well, there are some wives surfing this now so not every woman misses the boat…
Thank God he was trained to maneuver and endure the Wipeout.
why do i feel like only in California or Hawaii news will you hear someone say "gnarliest"
MOST PEOPLE would have DROWN from that
MOST people wouldn't be nuts TO do that.

Badass! Esp for his age and not a pro!
I think he's gonna need a bigger board.
WOw .... That's the worst .... Good you had the inflatable on ... Years ago I had a WIPE OUT at STEANER LANE and the only way I could get back to the surface for air was to go hand over hand on my leash cord
Eardrums will get blown out
Just amazing!😲❤
He caught some great waves that day.
Glad he is ok 👍Super Heavy Yikes!
The buoyancy popped him up
" . . . settle in for the beating. " I feel ya, brah.
Nerves of steel.. I think you mean balls!!!!💯
he had so many good ones during that session
It's not peahi, its Jaws...
PEARL!! And oh man, I was thinking he was gonna body board that out for a min. Wipe Out of the Year? 🤙

I cant imagine the terror of being in the ocean when its that huge and powerful, nontheless dropping in and eating it !😮
Mentally tuff, he's a 1%, er!
The part of him that's steel is below the waist.
Gnarlburgers...
Wave tumbling!
I caught the video last night.. : The Forever Kart Wheel.. i call it..
Insane
Who won the Guy Hagi vs Keahi Tucker heat at the Eddie?😂🤣🤷🏼♂️
If you hit a brick wall doing 80mph you would without a doubt be dead. Its silly when people compare hitting water to a brick or concrete wall.🤦♂️
W0W!
There's nothing you can do about it when you get thrown into the washing machine
*when you're thrown
❤ WOW 👌
Tough guy
well, in surfing you go about 40mph. So its like hitting a wall of water at 40, not hitting a wall at 80. Believe it or not. Nothing burger here
80 mph, brick wall? Hard hit perhaps. However 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏿
Must be nice to afford a recklessly lifestyle
Nice starfish
80ftoverWave wipeout!!
Yea boy you get um mau a mau, imua
I once held my breath for 2:30 🤓 haha dudes gnarly tho don’t try this at home in the tub
Yeah Jeff spicoli
tfg
Guys lucky
Oh owwie
Life's short make it shorter
Washing machined 😂
Spent his whole life preparing for this...😂 don't be so dramatic
Your comment shows, that you have absolute no idea, what it means to be in a wave like this.
@AwarenessItself-vv3zy really....his whole life🤣
Hitting a brick wall at 80 MPH and a human would be a pile of mush. What a drama queen.
Let’s see you do it pussy.
Why are the newscasters two smug Caucasian men from the mainland and NOT Native born indigenous Hawaiians or at least Asian Pacific islanders?
stupid
credit to his experience...but that was more luck than skills. i'll take luck over skill anytime.
I didn’t expect the Hawaii news guys to be white
Ka may ah may ah? Lmao
