  • Decided it was time to do the front U-Joints in the ol cattle chaser. It's a little more involved than just popping a driveshaft out, or in this case an axle, there's some special silliness that you have to do. Follow along for all the fun!

    Guys, I get it. The radio is distracting. If I had a nickel for every time someone commented on it, id have, like 45 cents. Lets be honest, my videos aren't "viral". I do my best to provide y'all with quality content-- this one was an oops. You can still hear me though!

    Great video. I've been a mechanic for over 30yrs in the military, dealerships and mostly on my own vehicles. I've found that I can buy the tools, quality parts and do the work myself far less expensive than paying someone else to do it. Plus No One does the work as good as I do on my own vehicles because they either don't care, don't know any better or just hope the customer won't know/see where they cut corners, such as the simple things like cleaning up the dirty/rusted areas. I've rebuilt several front end suspensions, engine work, etc. using OTC or as good of tools and saved thousands of dollars. I appreciate you being another "good Ole boy" that is also intelligent and articulate so that the video is a good one. USAF retired also. Thanks again!!

    • @USAF99
      @USAF99  3 роки тому +1

      The U-Joints are direct from my local Ford house, #3249. The outer dust seal is SKF 16510. The inner 4WD Vacuum seal is Timken 710492. Be careful on the vacuum seal, some trucks had a different sized shaft. You'll have to measure your driveshaft diameter inside the knuckle to ensure you get the right seal.

    You can save the step of removing the tierods, just cut the wheels all the way one direction, remove both wheelbearing bolts, then cut the wheels all they way back the other way and remove the last 2. I used a Cobalt 24 volt compact 1/2 impact gun. Its a little tight on one bolt but you can get it.

    • @USAF99
      @USAF99  3 роки тому

      Hard to turn, no. It should feel a little tighter but not hard to turn. Did you use the installation tool I used on the vacuum seal? Did the U-Joint move freely before you put the axle back in? If the U Joint is stiff give the caps a couple sharp smacks with a steel hammer to set them correctly. You might just have one off center slightly.

    • @patriotmotors6011
      @patriotmotors6011 3 роки тому +2

      Hi Ariel, the bad seal doesn't cause bearing wear. It is the other way around. More specifically, a bad bearing could cause the seal to deteriorate over time, but the biggest contributor to seal damage is a bad u-joint on this axle shaft. The bad u-joint will cause excessive play in the shaft which will destroy the seal in short order.

      I am more than happy to admit if I am wrong, nobody is perfect. I am however, in this instance, pretty sure I am correct. What year truck and axle were you working on? 2004 and down is a different seal and is easy to confuse. 2005 through at least 2008 is this seal and installed the way I said. The two seals DO look similar, however they are different both in the way they look and get installed. Also, if you look @13:29 I haven't removed the seal yet, and the old one is present the way I describe to install it. That's from Ford.

    • @USAF99
      @USAF99  Рік тому

      Not and get it to the correct depth- its much easier to just use the tool. Those seals are far to expensive for "try it and see" in my opinion, but I suppose it could be done.

    The title is video is changing F-250 front axle ujoints and seals, at 16:10 minute mark you say I'm not going to bore you with changing the U-joints and axle seals, not trolling Im just laughing I thought that was funny as hell

    • @USAF99
      @USAF99  2 роки тому

      I get what you're saying. It is kinda funny. The intent was to show how to get TO them and change them, not to actually show how to remove/install U-Joints which is a fairly mundane and straightforward task.

    You know every video I've clicked on so far says how to change U-joints and I can't find a goddamn one that shows me how to install the damn things everyone keep skipping over it what the hell is wrong with you guys everything else is Patrick Lee common sense

    • @USAF99
      @USAF99  3 роки тому

      If everything else is common sense, the universal joints should be literal childs play. Hence why nobody shows it.

    • @lucifchristo
      @lucifchristo 3 роки тому

      Yeah the problem is though if you remove the Caps not knowing that there are needle bearings in there you can screw things up a bit if you're too rough or haphazard thinking it's just solid metal or that there's some sort of ring bearing inside. Everything else you can do with a ball joint press or a socket and a hammer
