I know what I'm doing this weekend. We're fortunate to have a dedicated diesel tech in our town who also does excellent work. Our '03 7.3l has the typical wander. There were some worn front end parts that needed replacing and that helped, but didn't completely eliminate the issue. We notice it most when pulling or camper. I thought maybe I hadn't set up the weight distribution hitch correctly, so I paid the RV dealer to double check my work and all was well. We thought about adding a steering stabilizer, but I'll be troubleshooting u-joints prior to that! I have all the tools minus the seal driver and enough mechanical skills that even with the $80 tool purchase I can save myself a bunch of money doing this myself. Excellent video; thank you for sharing your expertise.

Your my HERO I got my truck fixed . They replaced the universal joints and upper and lower ball joints just because the truck was 18 old and I figured if they had it to that point they might as well do them . Thanks for taking the time to help people like me . GOD BLESS you
Your help was appreciated on my 2002 ford . I also have a 2019 superduty king ranch and run into a proublem towing my 5th wheel. Its 59" from the top of the bed doun to the ground and when my 5th is attached there is only 4" between the truck and camper overhang. I spent week's trying to find a solution so I didn't hit the dam 5th wheel agen . The solution was to change the 4" blocks to 2" blocks out of a 2020 they sit 2" shorter . I added airbags so when not towing I can put it back to 59" . also when towing on the highway I put the truck at normal height so I don't get high beamed. I thought I would pass this along because nobody out there could help me not even several ford dealerships . Thanks

@@InTheShop The axles were fine.. the ball joints were a bitch getting them off the truck and pressing them out... had to borrow Snapon air hammer, ball joint tool, and 5ft breaker bar. It kicked my butt.
You saved my day. As my truck passed 150k I’ve been changing steering parts as they’ve worn out and everything is tight now. But, I couldn’t figure out what was going on with this intermittent jerky steering after a turn. I started considering the steering box before this video so thanks, you saved me a ton of $.
Why are all the good mechanics out of my reach, LOL!! I had those ball joints changed out on my 2000 F-350 back in 2008 and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE it made!!! I can tell they're due again and now I can do it myself now. That's for sharing Nate. NEW SUBSCRIBER!!! 👍👍
Great video. I bought a 99 f250 a couple years ago for a backup/hunting truck. Steering wanders constantly, it’s a very unnerving feeling. I’ve had the front end inspected by two very experienced shops. One changed a tie rod end, another changed out 1 front u-joint and did an alignment. The tech showed me the u joint that was bad, he was basically prying on it with a small crowbar and noticed the slop in it. The test that you perform is the key to identifying this issue. Just because there is no slop or play in the u-joint obviously doesn’t mean it’s not bad. The steering was marginally improved after the 1 u-joint and tie rod end. However, because the other joint was still “tight” (lacking slop or play), it was not replaced. I even took it back to that shop a year later and had it re inspected and re aligned, still wandering all over the road. Going to get the other side done and see if that ends the saga!
Thanks for the tutorial, I've got a wandering 2005 F-350. I just ordered the parts and 6697 oil seal tool. Now I just need to tear the front end down and install the new u-joints. You've given me the confidence to take on this project!
Mad props, I've worked on a ton of these (pro-Ford tech). Obviously, u-joint was the failure on this unit, props to you for correctly diagnosing. I"ve never seen this myself despite working on nothing but Super Duty for the last 20+ years. More often I've seen ball joints sticking (usually replacements). Tighten ball joints in proper sequence (50 ft/lbs bottom, 70 ft/lbs top, 150 ft/lbs bottom) to keep replacements free turning.
I just bought an 05 f350 and ordered hubs for it, they came in today. I'm glad I watched this video. I think I'll go ahead and do this while I've already got the hubs off. Great video, thanks.
glad i watched this before i tried to fix myself, special tool is the key, i would of gone nuclear when things didnt come off or go back on, now to see if we can rent this where i live
I do appreciate you my friend. I was pulling my hair out, what's left of it, trying to diagnose the problem. With the truck in the air, I spent countless times grabbing the tire at 12 and 6, and 3 and 9 with no movement was very frustrating. Thanks very much for explaining the diagnosing portion of the problem. It's nice to know the 'why we're doing this' instead of just the 'what to do'. Intermittent problems are the worse ! My hats off to you. I owe you a beer.
Clearly this man is a good mechanic. He is spot on with the cause of the steering centering issue that I had. My right side front axle u-joint was seized to the point that when I had the axle out and after removing the half that did articulate, I could barely get the u-joint to rotate striking it with a three pound hammer on the bench. Because I had the option, I chose to cut the center of the u-joint out with a torch rather than trying to get the seized cap off in a free state as seen starting at about 19:06 in the video. Also not mentioned in the video, I recommend removing the half of the joint that is not seized first, as it makes it easier to remove the stuck side if the other half of the axle is not flopping around. My truck drives great now and I did not blow 1K on a steering box I did not need. Thank you for the video
I had this on my 2015 F350... it would shake the steering wheel back and forth after turning a corner. It took a day to figure out what the heck was going on! Thanks for the video!
Nate! My F350 has been in the shop more than on the road. lol. Spent so much money attempting to fix wandering steering problem...Local Ford dealer told me "thats just the way it is"! Cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge.
Wow. I replaced ball joints, sway bar end links, shocks, and springs, all was actually needed but it didn’t fix my wander issue. I’d imagine this is it. Thank you.
Really well done presentation. I have a 2000 excursion, and the steering was goofy, thought it was the box, valves, who knows. Took it to my mechanic, put on the hoist, yanked the tie rods as you did, and checked the ujoint. Exactly what the problem was. It can actually cause the steering to lock on you, a real fight the odd time.

I just did this to my 99 Ram. Had steer wander on the road and a lot of clunking when hitting bumps and it’s a lot better now. My mechanic told me the U joints were completely shot in every way.
Wow. Excellent vid. I did an extensive front end job on my 2008 F-250 a few years back. I just enjoy watching how others do this. The worst part of the job for me was removing that damn snap ring. Thing is a fat as a nickle. I had to buy a very expensive snap ring pliers and even then it wasn't easy. In my case I chose to replace the entire axle with a new universal already installed. I wasn't confident in my abilities to press out that old universal. The irony is, once I dove this deep into it, I was like: "I'm in here I mind as well change the ball joints while I have everything apart". So I ended up getting the ball joint press tool from the Advanced Auto loaner program after all. You do excellent work. Great job!

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It’s probably the best tutorial video I’ve seen on UA-cam. I was having this exact problem with my 2008 F350. Initially, I thought it was the steering box. But after thinking about it more, just couldn’t shake the feeling that it had to be something else. Ended up searching UA-cam, saw this video, and knew this had to be the solution. Did the test you suggested. Sure enough the wheel wouldn’t turn. Performed the u-joint replacement today. Went perfectly thanks to your video. Truck drives so much better now. Many, many thanks!
I would do one more step. Clean the yokes on the axle. That prevents debris from getting in the new u-joints. Good video. Very direct without the un-necessary back story.
I came across this video in my UA-cam feed late one nigh this week. Today I checked my joints and sure enough passenger side is seized. I've only had the truck a few years and looks like the PO changed them to non greaseable type, also seems to have a seized tie rod on the drivers side, so it looks like I've got some busted knuckles in my future. Thanks for a great video and subscribed.
Great job explaining everything. I've got a 2002 - F250 gas burner with 318,000 miles. Yesterday I had a vibration that seemed to come from the drive shaft mainly during acceleration. This morning I've got gear oil leaking from the right front axle. Probably a total separate project but really enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work.
All of the work performed here needs to be done to replace the inner axle seals but you additionally have to pull the front differential and install new seals from the inside. Hopefully this helps and thank you for watching!

Young man you are just too intelligent for your little bitty age, god bless you, keep up the good work, you will be a winner for the rest of your life, stay safe, don't let anyone hurt you, bless you------grandpa David.
Thank you Grandpa David! That really means a lot to me. I'll be 34 this year. Ive worked hard in my short years to take in as much knowledge as possible and now I'm enjoying being able to share it with the world.
@@InTheShop All mine and the rest of the folks who appreciate you, blessings from all of us, take care in these difficult times.
Just finished this repair today. Thank you for providing the content on this. Bought the seal installer and the hub removal tool and it worked flawless
The dealer (stealerships) cannot even diagnose these problems.. thanks they replaced a ball joint for $750 and didn't fix the wander. 2008 F350 Super Duty 110K miles. Super great presentation and you are super smart...
Thanks you for watching!
Excellent video. You did a super job of explaining each step and then actually showing how the steps were performed.
Thanks Lee! I try hard to make these videos for you all.
Props to your great video. It’s hard to find a video that actually shows the work that is done without skipping how everything is done!
Just discovered your channel and I really enjoy your no-nonsense approach to explaining these repair procedures. You really hit on some important points that us "shade-tree" mechanics might miss due to lack of experience or knowledge, so I truly thank you for sharing these tips. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your helpful videos.
Thank you!
Retired mechanic here ,,, dam good video,,, im subscribed,,, like where you point out to diagnose the problem,,, throwing parts at something it doesn't need gets expensive,,,, and doesnt fix it ,,, great job
GREAT VIDEO....HAPPY TO BE A NEW SUBSCRIBER.
THREE MECHANIC'S HAVE ALREADY MISDIAGNOSED THIS SAME ISSUE,
WITH A BUNCH OF UNNECESSARY PARTS AND LABOR.
TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR ATTENTION TO DETAIL....
Thank you!
Wow. I finally know what's wrong with my F250. Stupid place told me I'd have to shell out 4k for a front end rebuild.
Thank you so much for posting this video!
Probably the best R&R video and detailed explanation of the U joint and seals for these trucks. This video helped me considerably.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad I was able to help.
Hands down the best video on 4x4 hubs! Thanks, awesome job
Thank you Joseph!
Your boss man. I’ve been a mechanic for a little over 20 years man I’m getting old but your boss mad respect
Thanks Neil!
I noticed you used ant seize when you were assembling. That stuff can be a life saver down the road.
Saves so many headaches down the road! I use it as much as I can.
@@InTheShop I use to work in the dairy industry and everything was stainless steel. If someone forgot anti seize you would never get nuts and bolts apart again.
@@davidcoalkey6074 I use that shit on everything! just rotated the tires on my 014 PS, wire wheel, wire brush, Never seize. a winning combo. I'll even go so far as removing bolts now that I know I'll need to later just to goop them up.
My paps truck was miss diagnosed and he dont pay for something that dont fix the problem got a free steering box out of and tore his front end apart himself 02 7.3 u r a great mechanic I have to do joint on his 07 6.0 and this video help tons good man thumbs up bro
Thanks Peter! Very common to be misdiagnosed
This was good, you're the man, Bro. I'm going to grease mine before this happens.
Thanks Abraham! Grease will definitely help avoid this.
Best I've seen, described the problem well then showed all the tricks/tools needed to repair the worn parts. I already looked where this guy shop is. Too bad I live in California and the shop is back east.
Thanks Scott!
Great Video. He Explained EVERYTHING. Wish he did videos for all my projects. Thanks
Thanks Frank! Let me know what what else you would want to see.
Great video! Thank You for taking the time to show the proper steps for disassembly and re assembly and the correct procedures to prevent damage to the components. Well Done.
Great Job! You are well worth the time to watch. Very informative. Sometimes its all about the right tool!!!
Thank you for taking the time to watch
Your my HERO I got my truck fixed . They replaced the universal joints and upper and lower ball joints just because the truck was 18 old and I figured if they had it to that point they might as well do them . Thanks for taking the time to help people like me . GOD BLESS you
Thank you! I'm happy I was able to help.
Thanks
Shared to Facebook 6.0 Powerstroke enthusiasts.. good stuff man !
Thanks man! I appreciate that!
As a old helicopter mechanic - I really enjoyed watching and benefited from from sharing his short cut to thank you
Thank you!
Great video man! Best video I have seen on replacing those joints and seals, thank you!
Thanks Justin! That means a lot to me.
Spot on, mate. I'm a rusty mechanic with a 2002 Superduty with thjs problem. You've given me the confidence to rewind 40 years and tackle this myself. 🙏
It’s not a bad job, sometimes the nuts holding the wheel bearing in can be a pain, every 6.0 I buy gets a whole new front end right away.
Pulling my axles today to replace ball joints glad I watched so I can check the axles probably would have sat them aside and not check the movement
Commonly overlooked. Once you know you will check every time. I have found a lot of them frozen up while doing balljoint jobs and usually always quote them at the same time.
Excellent video and advice! A common mis diagnosis by many ! Lot of mechanics overlook the ujont thankyou for sharing 👍
Thank you! Very common.
Thanks for watching!
That was a freaking awesome video..I need to get that seal tool as my son just bought a 2015.
I dont even have a ford (dodge fan) and still wat hed this till the end. Good information
Thank you for watching Francisco!
Thanks for the tutorial, I've got a wandering 2005 F-350. I just ordered the parts and 6697 oil seal tool. Now I just need to tear the front end down and install the new u-joints. You've given me the confidence to take on this project!
Thank You for the great video!!! This is really helping me out with my 2006 F350 front end rebuild 👍🏻
WakanFarm awesome! Thanks for watching!
Very good man I think this might have solved my issue! Thank you for the information so much
No problem! Glad I could help
I just bought an 05 f350 and ordered hubs for it, they came in today. I'm glad I watched this video. I think I'll go ahead and do this while I've already got the hubs off. Great video, thanks.
Thanks for watching Robert!
glad i watched this before i tried to fix myself, special tool is the key, i would of gone nuclear when things didnt come off or go back on, now to see if we can rent this where i live
Great video, I like the way you work!
Thanks George!
Is that a Magical Hammer of some kind? Because my tie rods take more of a golf swing with a sledge hammer repeatedly to break loose.
Haha I cracked them free before the video was made. They do typically take a decent wack.
I had this on my 2015 F350... it would shake the steering wheel back and forth after turning a corner. It took a day to figure out what the heck was going on! Thanks for the video!
I bet this is the reason sometimes I can’t turn at all until I start rolling and then it’ll finally loosens up and turns easy after a few feet
Its possible. Check out the joints and see what you find. If its not that I would consider a possible failed brake booster if its a diesel truck.
Nate! My F350 has been in the shop more than on the road. lol. Spent so much money attempting to fix wandering steering problem...Local Ford dealer told me "thats just the way it is"! Cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge.
Good job, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Wow. I replaced ball joints, sway bar end links, shocks, and springs, all was actually needed but it didn’t fix my wander issue. I’d imagine this is it. Thank you.
Let me know if this solves your problem!
I signed up. Great speaker, knowledgeable,plus. 👍❤️👍
Thanks Bruce!
Thank you! Glad you found your problem.
how did the customer react when you cured the problem where the others couldnt
Relieved the problem was finally solved but obviously unhappy they spent a significant amount of money elsewhere needlessly.
@@InTheShop you know the truck owner is going to pass your card around to his friends ! Whom ever taught you gave you a real blessing to be a limitless master 👍
Honesty does pay, specially those who can deliver real fixes 🤗
G Lasser thank you! I just try to do the right thing and pay attention to the root of the problems.
Great job!
Thanks Mike! I really appreciate that.
Dude good stuff - and who is that music from ? ? That stuff is Hip !
Thanks Rudy! I believe the music came from youtubes audio library in the creator studio.
Dude, I am very impressed...you are a God send. Your time, and character is superior..
Well done...my 2022 came from factory with this issue...
I use a cut off wheel when stuck like that, take out the center...
Great imformation
You are the man I had a guy swearing up in down I needed too change my steering box and I was about too upgrade it and I came across your video and the driver side is so bad you can't wiggle it in both angles Thank-you sir
I can't find the front U joints on my 2wd. Oh well I'll just enjoy my beer.
Did you check your neighbors truck yet? Might find them there. What kind of beer you drinking? I've been on an IPA kick.
@@InTheShop Neighbor's truck is a Dodge. Even the best mechanic can't fix that. Ive been enjoying a free pack of Horny toad blonde. Although enjoy is not the right word.
@@InTheShop yep, the Lagunitas IPA are a real treat, all well deserved! BTW here is how to fix URIC ACID gained from beer: simply drink lemonade and cherry juice moderately.
Enjoy, keep up all your wisdom 🤗
Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It’s probably the best tutorial video I’ve seen on UA-cam. I was having this exact problem with my 2008 F350. Initially, I thought it was the steering box. But after thinking about it more, just couldn’t shake the feeling that it had to be something else. Ended up searching UA-cam, saw this video, and knew this had to be the solution. Did the test you suggested. Sure enough the wheel wouldn’t turn. Performed the u-joint replacement today. Went perfectly thanks to your video. Truck drives so much better now. Many, many thanks!
Awesome! I love hearing stuff like this.
Missed the most important part . Make sure all cap bores and seal bores are clean and rust free.
This is definitely important. Thank you for watching and providing your input.
I would do one more step. Clean the yokes on the axle. That prevents debris from getting in the new u-joints.
Good video. Very direct without the un-necessary back story.
Thanks for watching and that is a great piece of advice.
👍
Best mechanic "how to" video I've seen on YT. I'm glad I came across your channel.
Thanks Mark!
Ha go flippin figure about the tierod clearance issue thank you ford lol
Bad design. The drivers side comes off without removing the swaybar though.
Glad the video helped! Thanks for watching man!
Thanks to your video I was finally able to correctly diagnose my 2012 SD. The condition worsened over a years time, I was so aggravated cause the condition was intermittent.
I love hearing this!
My wife had complained about the very issue you had described but never happened to me. (2012 F250) Just the other day it happened to me. I verified the issue and now will be changing the front u-joints. Well done young man🤘
Man, thank you so much for this video. I have over $2,000 in this problem so far with same problem. After this video, I finally had my guy to listen and test this. My truck is finally drivable. Again, thank you!!
Awesome! I love getting comments like this. This is the whole reason I make these videos.
