Wow. I replaced ball joints, sway bar end links, shocks, and springs, all was actually needed but it didn’t fix my wander issue. I’d imagine this is it. Thank you.
Retired mechanic here ,,, dam good video,,, im subscribed,,, like where you point out to diagnose the problem,,, throwing parts at something it doesn't need gets expensive,,,, and doesnt fix it ,,, great job
Great video. I bought a 99 f250 a couple years ago for a backup/hunting truck. Steering wanders constantly, it’s a very unnerving feeling. I’ve had the front end inspected by two very experienced shops. One changed a tie rod end, another changed out 1 front u-joint and did an alignment. The tech showed me the u joint that was bad, he was basically prying on it with a small crowbar and noticed the slop in it. The test that you perform is the key to identifying this issue. Just because there is no slop or play in the u-joint obviously doesn’t mean it’s not bad. The steering was marginally improved after the 1 u-joint and tie rod end. However, because the other joint was still “tight” (lacking slop or play), it was not replaced. I even took it back to that shop a year later and had it re inspected and re aligned, still wandering all over the road. Going to get the other side done and see if that ends the saga!
Commonly overlooked. Once you know you will check every time. I have found a lot of them frozen up while doing balljoint jobs and usually always quote them at the same time.
@@InTheShop The axles were fine.. the ball joints were a bitch getting them off the truck and pressing them out... had to borrow Snapon air hammer, ball joint tool, and 5ft breaker bar. It kicked my butt.
You saved my day. As my truck passed 150k I’ve been changing steering parts as they’ve worn out and everything is tight now. But, I couldn’t figure out what was going on with this intermittent jerky steering after a turn. I started considering the steering box before this video so thanks, you saved me a ton of $.
Wow. Excellent vid. I did an extensive front end job on my 2008 F-250 a few years back. I just enjoy watching how others do this. The worst part of the job for me was removing that damn snap ring. Thing is a fat as a nickle. I had to buy a very expensive snap ring pliers and even then it wasn't easy. In my case I chose to replace the entire axle with a new universal already installed. I wasn't confident in my abilities to press out that old universal. The irony is, once I dove this deep into it, I was like: "I'm in here I mind as well change the ball joints while I have everything apart". So I ended up getting the ball joint press tool from the Advanced Auto loaner program after all. You do excellent work. Great job!

Loved the great point on instructions! And your a top notch mechanic from just watching your attention to the details :) I'm always looking for videos on Super Duty trucks; mine's a 2000 F-250 and has been a solid truck... except I need to how to remove the oil tube thing on the drivers side of the Real Power Stroke, the 7.3 :) I have an oil leak and I've heard it's easy to break the housing during removal!
@@InTheShop on my 7.3 there's oil cooler below the left side exhaust manifold! I've heard and seen that if not removed properly you can break it trying to remove the dang thing :)
ahh the oil cooler. The problem I see people run into is when they try to take it out and leave the front endocarp bolted onto the motor. I remove the entire assemble. take it apart and thoroughly clean the end caps. use a scotch bright pad on the inside of the end caps to make sure the o-rings slide in smoothly. Use grease when assembling.
I just got my first death wobble on my 2012 F250 @ 135,000 miles. Doubt this video is my cause but I enjoyed watching you explain how to deal with this issue. Don't underestimate having rugged snap ring pliers, not the junk they sell at auto parts stores. The snap ring inside the hub is no joke its potentially the hardest part of the job. Great video your skills are evident, Ive done these at least half a dozen times on a F350, New England weather eats u-joint on plow trucks.

Great video and super helpful. I got a loaner ball joint press from Napa and they press was too narrow and ended up bending the outer part of the shaft. Probably worth having a bigger one, or taking it somewhere to be pressed out. I added up the costs on everything, and just buying replacement axle shafts for both sides probably would have been easier and only about a $150 difference.

I have a 97 sclb powerstroke with skys shackle flip kit. It has sloppy wandering steering. Ive done everything to the front-end except the u joints. I will check u joints now
I always emery cloth the holes and clean the rust from the inner surface where the retaining clip sits. After final assembly i smack the shaft hard with a 4lb hammer near the ujoint to remove any stress and overtight caps. Also it will test if the clips are properly seated. You dont want a ujoint coming apart during operation
this was a great video. I have an 01 350 and i have a sneaking suspicion that it may be the front axle Ujoints but i am not 100% because i don't have steering problems. the problems I am having is that in 2wd going 55+ a low pitched humming noise happens accompanied by a light vibration. but in 4wd whether high or low the front end almost sounds like the drivers side start popping and clunking. some have told me it is the unit bearing but i jacked it up and couldn't find any slop or play so i have kind of hit a road block here and i don't have thousands to pay a shop to diag and repair it for me you know... but the noise also almost sounds like it's coming from the pumpkin as well....
@@InTheShop yeah but the humming and popping clunking sounds started at the exact same time and if it isn't the unit bearings causing the popping and clunking noise then I am thinking it may not be them I just don't want to drop around $400 for wheel bearings just to find out it's not them you know? Or even worse drop that money and do all of that work to find out it wasn't them AND that I have to do that work and then some all over again.
New to your channel and absolutely love it! I'm having a similar issue with my 2001 7.3 4x4 and I think I'm going to give this method a shot. Thanks again for the info!
Thank you! I started uploading 1 1/2 years ago. My subscriber count is rising but it takes years. I appreciate the kind words and its people like you that help me grow.
You’re video was very good to the point didn’t leave a bunch of stuff out as you’re doing the work like some other videos do I have a 2019 F250 I’ve had the death wobble happen when I hit expansion joints on bridges or potholes I’ve had the steering dampener replaced twice and the drag link ball joints replaced once it’s like a 13,000 miles on it I still have that sway or bump steer whatever you wanna call it when I hit bumps and such and I don’t quite know what it is after looking at your video at approximately how many miles would that knuckle go out? Also I noticed that I was doing about 45 miles an hour and I came up in traffic and I rear ended somebody because the truck would exactly stop it kind of glided to stop if you know what I mean I had Ford check the brakes out they said of course there’s nothing wrong with it I know there is because I’ve taken the truck out again at the exact same speed I slam on the brakes and I still glide to a stop. Any suggestions on both problems
I think the best way to get that wheel bearing off is to wedge in between the knuckle and the bearing. Start with a very small flat head screwdriver and work up in size. Don’t pry, just hammer it in and pull it back out
Great video. Pretty sure this is my issue. But, why does it still cause a problem when the truck is in 2wd with hubs unlocked? Seems like should only be an issue in 4wd.
The universal joints still have to pivot even in 2 wheel drive. This is why it can sometimes be an intermittent issue. If one direction of the joint is frozen and the other isn’t it can sometimes turn free and other times bind.
This was a very good and informative video. Do you think this would be a contributing factor for the death wobble a lot of these vehicles suffer from or is that a completely different issue.
Stumbled across the video looking for other things such as steering stabilizer for 2017 f350. I definitely learned a thing or two. Enjoyed the video. Great job. Looking at the video now I want a Milwaukee impact wrench. When is Father’s Day? 😀
I turn the wheels hard left or right. Hubs unlocked, in 2 wheel drive. Spin the axles. They should turn smooth and free. No need to jack it up or take anything apart.
Haha thanks for watching! I used to have a nice set of caliper hanger hooks but they grew legs and walked right out of my shop. Still haven’t gotten around to replacing them.
It’s the first time I saw you! Thank you and it is very helpful video! I got 99 f250 I got that pay and I can’t find what’s the problem! I hope I can fix that!
I'd like to take the time to add something here. That is a commonly missed thing with u-joint installs regarding the joint being tight after install. The binding comes from one or both of the caps being down too tight on the cross journal. You have to push all 4 cups out hard against the clips. The way I do that is set one yoke down on two large sockets on the bench and bang on the opposite shaft. This pushes down on the horizontal sides of the cross and pushes the cups hard against the clips. Repeat this process for all 4 cups. You'll be amazed how smooth the joint is when doing that. With your method 2 of the cups are hard against their clips and two are probably binding with the cross.Try it next time and let me know what you think!
I’m replacing both sides. Is the drivers side removed similar to the passenger and will it require the same seals to replace as the passenger side? Thanks for the great video. Big help!
During reassembly, one can use a lug nut or two to temporarily hold the brake rotor in position for the purpose of reinstalling the 'loaded' brake caliper which comes next. ~Ancient Chinese Secret
My 92 150 was having the same problem. It was the ujoints... I have the dana 44 on my 92 150 flareside... I hate working on the dana 44 manual locking hubs. My hex nuts all ways seize on and i cant get my rotors off. Any ideas? I have tried tap and die, drilling out. Took it to other shops and thy just want to cut the whole 4x4 locking assembly off. I am to the point i want to just remove the dana 44's and put a dana 60 on. Might sound dumb but 60s to me are easier to work on.
I have a 2016 Ram 4500 two-wheel drive that has been giving me fits for a long time, doing this same thing. The steering wonders all over. I've had a new steering box, steering damper, intermediate and upper steering shafts, new tires, new shocks, everyone has said all of the remaining parts are solid, yet the issue persists. Does this truck have a similar axle joint and might that be the issue? Thanks so much really enjoy your professionalism and knowledge
@@InTheShop thanks for your quick reply! The truck has been aligned multiple times, both with zero toe, and a little bit of inward toe as well as outward toe,. Nothing seems to help. We used to think that the wheels were fighting against one another causing the wonder, but different alignments did not change the condition. It's almost uncontrollable when driving down roads where heavy trucks have laid down ruts in the pavement. Thanks for any suggestions!
Thanks so much for this! I have some bad wander. Shop quoted me 6700 to replace every single thing on my 123k 2008 f350. Obviously, i went bad got the truck and said no thanks. I just changed the passenger hub with no major issue. Probbaly will now do driver hub but will do this check. Stupid question, are the u joints only on the passenger side?
I just bought a f250 I havn't had one since the 90s, does Ford know how to make a front end that don't have issues, last one i had, had king pins, I don't think they got those anymore.
Awesome video. How much should it cost to get this done to my 2002 f250? I have no problems paying for quality work although I hate paying inflated bills.
Thanks for watching James. I would have a hard time telling you a cost since the labor and parts market varies largely around the country. I would say you should pay no more than 3 hours labor per side. I hope this helps.
Great video! Just did what I considered a front end “overhaul”, minus a steering box, but am still having this problem. Going to test this afternoon. Dumb question for you, any tips on disconnecting the hub sensor plug. While I was working on the truck the other day I tried to unhook it but could let figure out how the plug works. It looks like it’s 2 stage or something but couldn’t get it undone.

The humming is likely the bearing. Most times unless they are really bad you won’t be able to hear or feel the play in the bearing.
@@insaneTrout Your U joints going bad likely damaged the wheel bearing. Not what you like to see but it happens.
This is a great video, very well explained. I like your idea of using the ball joint press! Thanks
New to your channel and absolutely love it! I'm having a similar issue with my 2001 7.3 4x4 and I think I'm going to give this method a shot. Thanks again for the info!
Let me know how you made out
How do you not have more subs? Awesome video. I don't even own anything this new but still enjoyed the info. Thanks!
Thank you! I started uploading 1 1/2 years ago. My subscriber count is rising but it takes years. I appreciate the kind words and its people like you that help me grow.
Nice video man. I want you working on my 2003 F350. I would have never guessed that could be the issue on steering.
Thank you! I’m in Massachusetts. Where are you located?
@@InTheShop Lol, San Diego, California.
Very cool step by step uninstall and reinstall thxs. I enjoyed your video very helpful.
Thank you Brian!
Very good information best One so far. Thanks
Great video. Very concise and informative.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Very informative and thank you very much. high quality video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
This was a very good and informative video. Do you think this would be a contributing factor for the death wobble a lot of these vehicles suffer from or is that a completely different issue.
Thanks Michael! Death wobble is usually a different issue. I always start by checking the trackbar.
The condition is called 'pointing'. Can also be caused by tight ball joints.
Absolutely. A little more rare to see ball joints causing it but I have seen it. Thanks for watching!
EXCELLENT VIDEO. NO NONCENCE
Thanks for checking it out Hank!
wow awesome video, that was a great help for me. thank you so much brother....
Stumbled across the video looking for other things such as steering stabilizer for 2017 f350. I definitely learned a thing or two. Enjoyed the video. Great job. Looking at the video now I want a Milwaukee impact wrench. When is Father’s Day? 😀
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this excel video and the information.
OK where are you located? your detail and professionalism in this video just makes me want to bring you my 2015!
Awsome video great guide to getting the job done 😎👍
Thank you!
I turn the wheels hard left or right. Hubs unlocked, in 2 wheel drive. Spin the axles. They should turn smooth and free. No need to jack it up or take anything apart.
great info, thanks.
someone send this man some brake caliper hanger hooks.
Haha thanks for watching! I used to have a nice set of caliper hanger hooks but they grew legs and walked right out of my shop. Still haven’t gotten around to replacing them.
I bend an 1/8 inch welding rod. Works good.
im gunna give my dana60 a look the next time i take my truck out, it does wander around the road a lil
Thanks for watching Garrett! let me know what you find.
Awesome work,& knowledge brother. 👍 👍
It’s the first time I saw you! Thank you and it is very helpful video! I got 99 f250 I got that pay and I can’t find what’s the problem! I hope I can fix that!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and thank you for the input!

Great video! Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it!
hi great job i am doing one on my 2003 f350 i have a question the axle tube seal is not on mine must have worn off is the 2007 seal the same as 2003?
I have a 2016 Ram 4500 two-wheel drive that has been giving me fits for a long time, doing this same thing. The steering wonders all over. I've had a new steering box, steering damper, intermediate and upper steering shafts, new tires, new shocks, everyone has said all of the remaining parts are solid, yet the issue persists. Does this truck have a similar axle joint and might that be the issue? Thanks so much really enjoy your professionalism and knowledge
Unfortunately it doesn’t have axle joints like this. Has the truck been aligned?
@@InTheShop thanks for your quick reply! The truck has been aligned multiple times, both with zero toe, and a little bit of inward toe as well as outward toe,. Nothing seems to help. We used to think that the wheels were fighting against one another causing the wonder, but different alignments did not change the condition. It's almost uncontrollable when driving down roads where heavy trucks have laid down ruts in the pavement. Thanks for any suggestions!
Very informative knowledgeable video. Looks like Godzilla may have a drinking problem.
😂thanks for watching!
Solid video thanks. Any chance u joints would make a grind sound when 4x4 is engaged and hubs locked?
Its possible if they are loose
Excellent explanation great job great video thank you
Thanks Max!
What is the specialty tool called that puts it all back together
Thanks great job
Thanks for watching!
Nicely done
Thanks Anthony
Thanks so much for this! I have some bad wander. Shop quoted me 6700 to replace every single thing on my 123k 2008 f350. Obviously, i went bad got the truck and said no thanks. I just changed the passenger hub with no major issue. Probbaly will now do driver hub but will do this check. Stupid question, are the u joints only on the passenger side?
The universals are on both sides.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you
Great job!!!!
Thank you!!
Hi I’m have the same issue with an 04 RWD excursion. Obviously without the 4x4 hubs is this method pretty much the same process and parts for mines?
If it is Rear wheel drive only this wouldn't be your issue. I would check for worn out steering components or broken leaf springs.
Awesome video. If my seal is fine do I have to replace it?
I just bought a f250 I havn't had one since the 90s, does Ford know how to make a front end that don't have issues, last one i had, had king pins, I don't think they got those anymore.
Had the same problem with a 02 dodge 3500
Yup pretty much anything with these style axles can do the same. Thanks for watching!
In The Shop no problem, your channel randomly showed up and I’m a fan so far, I’ve subbed to the channel, 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Nice very nice job 👌
Thanks Tony!
I have a 2006 f350 doing that same problem what u joints and kit do I need to rebuild both sides
Hi Albert, I put links in the description of the video to all of the parts I use.
