  • The second of our 'Mini Chronicles' where we show you bitesize pieces of family life in a medieval chateau renovation. This year we've found that trying to make progress with a massive renovation (10 buildings, some completely derelict), manage a 130 acre estate, build a viable business and nurture a growing toddler, is quite ambitious for just the two of us. Adding in the project of filming it for UA-cam has at times been the straw that threatened to break the camel's back... So while we'll continue to release longer videos that do justice to our biggest projects, we'll not put a timetable on that and instead we'll try to do these Mini Chronicles more frequently. They won't be beautifully filmed or edited because doing that takes literally days of time that we don't have, but we hope that they make up for it with immediacy and frequency.
We could really do with both a boost at the moment and there are several things that you can do to help:
    1. Watch the adverts. (We don't choose them, the algorithm does. But this is how we get our income).
    2. Subscribe to our channel (UA-cam is more likely to promote us if we have more followers).
    3. Like and comment on our videos. (Even just an emoji! Also helps UA-cam know what to promote!)
    4. Spread the word - send it to your friends and family!
    5. Follow us on instagram and facebook (links below)
    6. If you want to see more videos and be part of a lovely community, please join us on Patreon. The standard tier is 3.50 euros a month or its equivalent in your currency. We produce between four and six extra videos a month, plus other posts, and we really open up our hearts and home in a way we can't do in public.

That’s quite an interesting spiritual principle… called the wheat and tares. But for you, quite an experience. don’t give up .You can always buy your wheat all grown and harvested in lovely burlap bags.

You may have the same problems next year with weeds in the wheat if you till up all the weed seeds. Try covering your wheat patch this winter with some thick heavy black plastic. It will heat up the soil, killing all the seeds and give you a good start in the spring. This is a new way of thinking about small farming, but it is having excellent results here in the USA. I love watching you both interact and can’t wait to see your next beautiful baby! Stay healthy and happy!

Yes, I did that in Alaska, but left it covered over one summer. I covered the plastic with old used carpet scraps to keep from blowing away. The weeds composted, & the following spring, I uncovered beautiful weed-free soil.

I lived in Wisconsin and Iowa for many years.I saw the huge combines that ran 24 hours a day during harvesting. Marc and Amy's wheat harvest has been the most fun to watch.Very impressive "Equipment"!The grains are lovely! May I suggest that next year you plant the weeds in a different area. Look forward to next years crop! You guys are awesome! Love from Vermont

Amy, I love your sense of humor. Laughing at your "lack" of the wheat crop! I am not much of a gardener myself, but I do appreciate a lovely garden and all the hard work that goes into it. I have been inspired this year to start my own cutting garden, as I want to have fresh flowers in the house. I am going to start small. My husband, who is "the" garden, has "granted" me a smallish size tub, about 1m x 1m, so that is not too many plants to kill :). If I am successful then next year I can look forward to a whole garden bed of my own!!

Your cheerful, self-deprecating attitude is SO charming - you probably can't realize how delightful your videos are. I suspect that you need to solarize that field to kill off the weed seeds - tilling would only have enhanced their ability to sprout. I wonder if adding a cover crop of a legume would also help protect your seedlings? (Don't know, just guessing here.) Fascinating to hear that you are planting sub-tropical fruits. It's quite sweet that Magdelone's version of "Amy" is "ami".

To improve weed control in this new garden area... try rotto tilling the soil in fall and then again in the spring before planting. Also, since no one is hoeing the garden area, or weeding it... you can try this trick... plant the rows a good distance apart so that you can use rotto tiller between the rows perhaps once a month through the growing season and thus reduce weed growth and better define the growing crop rows. Your walled garden immense and can support wider spacing of rows and still provide a bountiful crop for your personal use. Potatoes are often recommended to grow in new areas under cultivation as they help prepare the soil for other desirable crops and can compete with weeds as they grow big enough to be be noticable.

Gardening idea... Have you heard of the 3 Sisters growing system invented by First Nations People of North America. Since the squash grows so well for you and that is one of the 3 Sisters.... you might like to try a trial area for 3 Sisters growing system. Basically you plant corn, beans and squash together as they support each other nutritionally and in use of the land. All three crops provide winter storage as dried grain crops of beans and corn for winter use (and enjoy what you can in summer too), then the squash also can be stored for winter food source (and enjoy what you can through the summer). The corn provides upright support for pole bean growth and the squash provides ground cover growth to shade the soil (water conservation as needed) and help control weed growth. The corn should be planted close enough for wind cross pollination... perhaps in rows close together with a few bean seeds near by. I believe the bean seeds are nitrogen fixers for the soil... meaning they convert nitrogen from the air into plant usable nitrogen in the soil to help with green leafy growth for themselves, the corn and the squash that then helps support the plants vigor in flowering and fruiting. I wonder if pea seeds could be substituted for the bean seeds as they grow in similar fashion as nitrogen fixers and can provide food in summer and also as dried food source for winter storage. i hope you try the experiment and see what comes from it... you have the space.... LOL. Corn meal and corn flour can be excellent substitutes for wheat flour and provide a little variety in your diet. Also, the corn can be used to make lovely corn relish in fall pickling. The beans and squash can also be pickled for winter storage and use. All three make good soup and stew too.

You need pigs to clean up the weeds! Next summer, instead of planting and fighting the weeds, let a few pigs in there. They will eat the weeds, roots and all, turn the soil as well as fertilize it. Then following year you can plant your wheat …
If you don’t want to buy your own piglets maybe there’s a way to grow them for a pig farmer.

Better luck next year Amy xx I tried to grow sunflowers but all my heads were very small so I think it must have been a miniature variety 🤔🤔😂😂

Pepper has the same personality as the golden retrievers we had when I was growing up. What breed of dog is she?

Your doing a great job and definitely keep going with the growing, we all have to start somewhere. I've only learnt by keep trying . You'll find what is good in your soil. Cant you sell some of your squash? If you have to many that is . I'd definitely buy it if I was close by and what with winter coming I'm sure others would too .

Given how you are feeling no wonder you struggle with keeping up with the weeds. Better try next year
