Carrol the very best day of my life was the day I got to meet you in Garland at one of your houses! I won't say his name , but my and your friend brought me with him to see you. I had no idea where we were going, and when you came to the door I liked to had a heart a tack, he said do you know this man? And I said why hell yes, and Carrol just shook his hear and smiled. We were there're looking at a car you had built for my friend, and I was in all, I couldn't believe what I was looking at, and I guess I still didn't know what it was. But all in. All it was the greatest day of my life! Thank you, and my you rest in peace!

The first one with the rear windows was a beast. An Australian Driver imported one of a very few Boss 302 Mustang. It was red & what a great looking car it was. Moffat was by he’s own admission not the fastest driver but he won a lot of races in that car over a long period of time . He was with Alan Jones the most committed driver I have seen.

Regarding the Hertz cars...when the rental program first started, Smart guys started renting them for the weekend, take them home, pull the K code Hipo Engine replace it with a base 289 engine and put the Shelby manifold/carb/headers/valve covers back on and return the car...in the beginning the hertz guys would just do a walk around and see that the car ran fine and no questions asked. After that happened several times Hertz was directed to check that the engine was the Hipo engine (I assume checking the K code vin on the block....which incidentally was only put on the California cars which is where all the Shelby's came from as base K code fastbacks....now that I think about it I think I read that they actually put locks on the motor mounts so they couldn't be removed, can't quite remember). p.s. I owned a real '65 Fastback K Code Mustang...I applied all the Shelby Engine mods...the engine pulled 305 H.P. on a dyno which matched the advertised 306 that Shelby stated. It was pretty damn fast and that 289 Hipo would Rev...7K redline. I also owned a '70 Mach I with the Cleveland 4V engine and 4 speed close ratio top loader, which was a very fast car too. Also the first fuelie, the '86 Mustang GT, very nice car and a corvette beater with just a few mods...and my Coup de grace was a 2000 Cobra R model (#288 of 300)...that was a very well engineered car and was damn fast.

@@ryanbaker7404 In '65/'66 it was just rent an engine hoist unbolt the bell housing, the two motor mounts and take off the carb/manifold, unhook the battery cables, take off the fuel line, hook the two chain lift points to a couple bolts screwed in the manifold bolt points and out she came. If you knew what you were doing it was an easy weekend project. The K code engine came with racing connecting rods, heads and a mechanical cam setup and a crankshaft that had a higher steel density and a separate balancing weight/blade, a dual point distributor and a better water pump and fuel pump and oil pickup than the regular 289. It was loaded with race internal parts so made for a very attractive target.

Ice had to weld patch panels on places, patched the floorboard here and there. Took the old engine out and transmission rear axle and replaced it with a four link rear end by Strange Engineering and a Coyote 5.0. It’s gun metal grey and I love it.

This is the same reason Mustang II was considered a flop by True Mustang Guys, Mustang was soused to be sporty. There is nothing sporty about a V8 engine with 125 hp!

From the time that enlargement started, the Mustang had lost its "Euro" look. Instead of following the Porsche model of refinement every year, there were simply enlargements and styling changes. Sales dropped. Of course the car was maintained through a number of difficult times including the gas crisis until finally the Fox body helped to save the Mustang with the 5.0 liter engines. still the origns of the Mustang were not resurrected until 1998, when the design again reminded the viewer of a sort of Euro look even though it was not exactly the same as the original.

It was not the z/28 or the boss 302 in 1971 of the fastest cars in the trans am series , it was amc as the car to beat.
1970 new Javelin team owner Roger Penske and driver Mark Donohue would breathe new life into the AMC team. Donohue drove the Javelin to three victories, with AMC finishing second overall in the Manufacturers' Championship. In 1971, of the ten races that the Over 2.5L Class cars participated in, Donohue won seven of them, including the final six races in a row, with AMC winning the Manufacturers' championship for the first time ever. In the final race of the season, Javelins finished in first, second and third place, with George Follmer becoming the only other Javelin driver to win besides Donohue.

Not to take anything away from the Roger Penske/Mark Donohue Javelin-AMX, but all the other manufacturers dropped out. Chevy, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth and Ford all pulled their factory support. Only AMC stayed in the game. It was a shame, because that 1971 Javelin-AMX was the ultimate Trans Am car. It was so well developed and prepared, it was in a class by itself.

For some reason they thought those ugly decals were gonna make it run better? The wacky colors didn't help either. Now finally I'm starting to see a few great looking models but then a year comes around and it's back to ugly again. So inconsistent. Now you learn so much ,the issues is that the USA and FORD are the type of people that they think they are right, but if shelby had his way of design and suspension ways ford would have made so many its not funny, but as always internal politics always gets in the way and thus the design and end products always suffers and when you look at chrysler and GM they had no problems at all, compared to FORD ?

Not even watching this doc, anyone who knows the history of Ford knows that it is amazing the motor company even survived to exist under Henry Ford II. Case in point of someone who got the job through inheritance, not qualification. Now, history is repeating itself, especially with the Mustang. An electric Mustang is cool (BMW and others have made some freaky e-sports cars). When you make the Mustang a 4 door sedan, you just ruined the best thing you have. As far as me, so long Ford, you finally ruined everything you had ever going for you.

Hey buddy, thanks for your comment. I put my hands up and say straight up that I do not know a lot about American cars in general. This was a very old documentary that I had recorded from the tv some time ago which is why the video is not complete. I do love the old '70's American Muscle cars, just love the look and sound of them. I posted this video some years ago as I didn't know any different but just thought it was something cool on Mustangs.
I own the R34 Skyline you see on my channel, I go around a few car shows and meetings and post these up as I love cars in general. Unfortunately I do not have all the documentary on file otherwise I would post the whole thing.
I do find it quite amusing that here is so many things wrong with it and it was televised!
Thanks again for yours and everyones comments, I've actually learned loads reading them all!

Carrol did not "jump" at the opportunity to hop up the Mustang, he had to be coaxed (extensively) by FOMOCO. It was only once sales confirmed the success of this new addition and all was said and done w/ the first Shelby, that Ford finally realized Carrol's design expertise and marketing savvy. America wants to have fun behind the wheel and Shelby saw that.

In my opinion the 74-78 Mustang sales would have plummeted more if Charlie's Angels weren't driving them on the show. Everyone wanted to be sexy like them.

    • @iamredlinerhooligan587
      @iamredlinerhooligan587 4 роки тому

But the 74 Mustang II sold more units than any other year before or since except for the very first full year after introduction (1965). And that year barely beat it. The usual bashing of the Mustang II keeps plodding along but it really saved the car during times when everything was going foreign for gas crisis reasons and air pollution regulation. Lee Iaococa saved Ford's butt by introducing it at the "right" time.

Shelby did not "Jump" at the opportunity to mess with the "Secretary's car" - but he was obliged to do it... the success that followed was what kept Shelby on board. Let's not forget the '80's and the Shelby FWD Dodges.

As a Muscle-car enthusiast, I had to bail out on this documentary after about 3 minutes. Here they are talking about 1966 being a good year as they display a 65 Mustang, but Then GM made the Firebird and Camaro (68 and 67 respectively) as they are show a 71 Gen II Firebird....! You can tell this vid was patched together by some Brit's that know about as much about American Musclecars as I know about cricket...
