Video head rotates at one rotation per frame which means that the NTSC head rotates at 29.97 per seconds while PAL rotates at 25 per seconds. I made an experiment by slowing down the head drum with my finger and I saw a viewable picture on PAL tapes on NTSC VCR but in black and white and the speed is still fast. I don't do it for more than few seconds or it could damage the VCR. I also have to adjust the V-Hold of TV to prevent the picture from rolling (Not all TV have V-Hold).
But when it comes to the opposite like viewing NTSC tapes on PAL VCR means you have to speed up the head drum which is impossible to do by hand. I'ts more common in Europe than in the US to have VCR which are multi system and can play both PAL and NTSC so it's okay for most of them to buy NTSC tapes from the US and bring back home but not the other way around unless if you have a multi system VCR & TV.

i once tried channel 69 on my grandma's crt tv and it's a b&w copy (staticky) of channel 68 and there is a picture in the static and sound was like HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF BUT i saw the picture, just lines drawn in the static but if i go onto channel 0 (or even 70) it's AV/COMPOSITE (it is called av in my country (poland)) but some channels have static by dots or lines

@@laalpattharkedevata I don't think you were seeing an incompatible region channel, I think the signal was just bleeding badly into channel 69 which wasn't being used by any station at the time. I've seen similar things on my old TVs.

the reason why a pal tape does that is because a lot of the PAL tapes aren't really compatable with NTSC VCRS the closet would either be a Pal VCR or a multi regional VCR which plays all regions

That's what visually happens, but in technical terms, because these PAL VHSs are only recorded at 50 Hz, that means the video timing is incompatible with the NTSC's 60 Hz, producing the effect you see here. However the audio can still be heard, albeit at 60 Hz. However there may be some trickery out there to run a PAL VHS on a NTSC player...

That‘s because the head of the VCR is spinning faster than a PAL VCR head.
PAL VCR‘s have a rotation speed of around 24 spins per second whilst NTSC VCR‘s have a rotation speed of around 30 spins a second, that‘s also why PAL VHS Tapes have longer timestamps, because the tape is rotating slower.
In conclusion: Head‘s spinning faster than the tape was intended to be played at, and that pitches the audio up

VCRs sold in Europe/UK from the 1990s onwards typically had NTSC playback, often also full PAL and SECAM. European VHS machines from the late 1970s/early80s were PAL only, so with one of those you'd have static. The reverse is not true in North America. Most VCRs sold there were only NTSC until the end of the format.

But what if it's connected to an HDTV (which can receive PAL signals)? Will it be better? Worse?

    • @Bro-cx2jc
      @Bro-cx2jc 4 роки тому +1

It will still be the same. The bad signal isn't happening because the TV is NTSC. It's happening because the VCR is NTSC. The VCR and the TV are both in NTSC, so they're compatible with each other. Thus the TV is accurately showing everything correctly that the VCR is giving to it; it's the VCR itself that's having all these problems, because the tape it's playing is in PAL.
To fix this problem, you need to use a PAL VCR with the PAL tape. This will generate a proper playback. However, then since the TV is still in NTSC, it will not properly show the signal coming out of the PAL VCR, even though the VCR is now working perfectly with the tape. The signal you get will have the correct pitch audio and play at the right speed, and there will be an actual picture on the screen rather than static, but it will be a black and white picture (due to NTSC and PAL color frequency subcarrier mismatch), and unless the TV has an auto vertical frequency holder, the picture will still be scrolling infinitely (due to the mismatch between the 50Hz PAL signal and the 60Hz of the TV itself).
Finally, if you take that scenario, but use an HDTV, even if it's in NTSC, most NTSC HDTVs nowadays can properly show PAL inputs. So you'd likely get a fine reception from a PAL VCR playing a PAL tape. But no matter what TV you're using or where it's from, playing a PAL tape on an NTSC VCR (unless the VCR is compatible with multiple regions) will result in a terrible looking signal like the one in the video.

I think by manually slowing the VCR head like someone else said you can see it, but there's apparently something about the frequency at which the VCR is operating that causes this.
VCRs in NTSC will operate at 60Hz, while VCRs running at PAL will operate at 50Hz. This explains the 20% audio speedup in the video here, as well as the mismatched picture.
If you hooked your VCR up into a power converter that forced it to run at 50Hz, it might work as intended...for a few seconds...before blowing up due to the different voltage lmao
I don't think there's any way to make it work properly. Even if you could change the frequency of operation in a way that didn't damage the VCR with overdone voltage (heck, I don't know but maybe even just the change in frequency could damage it, I'm not sure how it works), you'd still get a black and white picture with a slightly distorted (stretched) image.

+BAISIN Christophe In Russia, Sony PAL/SECAM VCR cannot play NTSC Tapes. If you play NTSC tapes on PAL VCR = Vaporized effect as the pitch getting slow, screwed sound.

In Russia the PAL/SECAM VCR uses MESECAM mode, not France SECAM. These decks 2 heads cannot play NTSC tapes, However 6 heads( DA 4 Video+ 2 HIFI), may playing NTSC tapes with HIFI sound, only in SP modus. NTSC HIFI SLP/EP tapes are played with only linear sound. Audio dub is possible( erasing linear track, without modifications for video and HIFI sound)
S-VHS GRUNDIG VCR can playback NTSC tapes on PAL 60 525 lines, but NTSC HIFI tapes are played back( or audio dub), only with linear track.

What the crap!? Why does your screen look so squished? It’s way too short, surely? Is this the difference the extra 100 likes make, because my PAL TV is a fair bit taller.

Never mind showing the package or the cassette itself - just load and play. The image on the screen will tell us what you're trying to prove. The rest of it is just fiddlefarting about, and that's why I've given you the thumbs-down...TOO MUCH FIDDLEFARTING AROUND INSTEAD OF GETTING ON WITH YOUR DEMO!

Blu-ray is obsolete. Everybody records in h264 mp4 format, or other h264 formats. We put our h264 mp4 videos on hard drives or ordinary DVDs. You can easily fit 2-4 crystal clear 1080p HD movies on a standard, ordinary single layer DVD.
So in the blu-ray vs HD-DVD format war of over a decade ago, Blu-ray may have won on the store shelves of physical department stores, but today there is at least 10 times more HD mp4 video on ordinary DVDs than on blu-ray.
BD players & disks are for people who still think they need to spend a lot of money on a player device, & medium to play video. Most people these days download their video, copy a stream, record right off the air or cable, or copy from friends & family.
But VHS was obsolete well over a decade ago. I can fit an hour of VHS quality video on about 60-80mb of file space in modern mp4. That means I can fit about 27-38 VHS tapes on a single 4.7gb (4.3gb usable) ordinary DVD in h264 mp4 format.
Many modern players, TVs, most computers, tablets, laptops, & phones will play mp4. So they'll play on almost everything.

Eribetra: I was replying to a string of rude & outragous comments recently made by YOU. But now all those comments have suddenly disappeared. I'll assume the rude posts were either deleted by you or the channel's owner. So I just deleted my replies to your deleted comments also.
It is quite common for replies to comments on UA-cam to be inconsistent, & nonsensical because some of them were deleted, but leave no notification that replies are to a deleted comment.
Ideally if a comment is deleted, you'd think the replies to a deleted comment would also be deleted, or a notification should be above the replies saying the comment was deleted. But UA-cam don't work that way.
For those who haven't noticed, Eribetra is a 13 year old kid who gets his kicks trolling around channels, posting stupid stuff to start arguments, then edits or deletes his comments to make whoever replied to them look silly.
This makes your channels look bad because you see angry comments that don't seem to make sense, because they were replies to something Eribetra posted but later edited or deleted.
Look up his account. He's a little trolling kid who gets his kicks this way. I suggest you block or delete him from your channels until he grows up in about 5-8 years, & stops plaing these goofy troll games.

Amritpal, stop fighting! Blu-ray is already obsolete, and VHS is still used to this day. I still have watchable VHS tapes, well, "watchable" I mean. Of course VHS is obsolete, but it's still fun, unlike Blu-ray, because it's not a disk format. And Glaceon, you are wrong too. You don't even know if he is Indian, let alone his P.O. box! You're right in that VHS is still used, but computers are ALSO being used... Also, how would you make a VHS tape out of melted Blu-ray discs? And your secret network of VHS collectors aren't real, and you didn't raid any Blu-ray factory. But if it is real, then I would call the police, and well... but it isn't real. Also, take a photo of the 300+ VHS tapes, or it isn't real. But I happen to really have a secret gang of mine, and I'm going to track the exact location of you two. I've already gotten the number of your house, so say goodbye. You're dead, Glaceon Zionker.
      that last part is fake
