I think that Feature Films for Families just rips the DVD versions onto the tapes, and were too lazy to remove the DVD player screen at the end. And if it’s a bootleg, than it’s one of the highest quality bootlegs I’ve seen ever.
It appears that the pirate used a VHS that was recording a DVD Player... While it's useful for preventing the anti-piracy, it's not useful when the DVD Player stops before the tape recording stops, and can lead to people finding out their tapes are pirated.
I can just picture some guy in a tape duplication house just sitting there eating a ham sandwich, then all of a sudden the movie stops and he's like, "Oh crap! I better stop the DVD player!"
I've seen this bar on numerous VHS tapes, and it always follows the same pattern and timing: Start as a line that grows tward the bottom of the screen, stop before it actually reaches the bottom, then the line collapses from the top. I think this was some kind of signal that the tape duplicator used to indicate the end of the video. However in this case, it looks like the pirate copied an original VHS to DVD, and used that to make the bootlegs. Yes, this is a bootleg cooy, and does not cost much to make a professional looking box and shrinkwrap it. When VHS was big, it was common to find shrinkwrapped VHS tapes from no name companies filled with public domain shows and pirated movies.
I think I know why that's there. If you didn't know, normal VHS tapes (so not D-VHS) are ripped from a master tape. The tape you got must've been released sometime after the US received the DVD (so after 1997). The VHS' content was most likely ripped off a Sony DVD of the same movie you have. Sony did make the DVD (along with a bunch of other companies) after all. Why it wasn't removed before being sold, I'm not entirely sure. Another possibility is that your tape is a recording of the DVD release at home, and the VCR didn't stop recording until the DVD signal at the end popped up. In other words, it could be a bootleg.
Did you know that many prerecorded movies have the date displayed at the very start of the tape and the at the very end of the recorded portion of the tape? Most of these date stamps can only be viewed with a TV set showing all of the top of the vertical bar of the picture. It's also possible to see these when playing a tape on a TV and disagust the vertical hold to show the picture flip downwards a bit. I show one tape which has a date stamped in a video I uploaded earlier in January this year (A few interesting VHS tapes I found).
I remember renting an educational VHS tape from my local library once. I saw that the tape was almost at the end, but when I put it in the VCR, it played the first few minutes of the tape before it stopped. I took the tape out of the VCR and saw that it had reached the end, so I rewound it back to the beginning, played it through and found out that after the video supposedly finished, it started playing again.
So did they just rip the DVD version of it onto a VHS? Also, I had a few Films For Families VHS' when I was younger. "No More Baths!", "Coyote Summer", and the third one I can't remember the name. I don't remember any of them having a DVD thing at the end.
Someone must of copied an anti-macrovision DVD movie. I don't think it's possible to copy any DVD or VHS tape, as they dim and become unwatchable. So the DVD had to have no macrovision/copyright protection on it, in order for this to exist. It could also depend on what VCR the pirate used, some detect the signal as a standard TV pass-through signal. Anyway, very funny and interesting.
Interesting find! From what I saw, I'd say that this movie was recorded into the VHS tape from a DVD machine. I suppose this would mean that this movie should be available on DVD. I have seen the white visual noise at the end of prerecorded movies before but not with a display of the machine that recorded it. I wonder if it's common to for manufacturers of movies to record it this way. After all, the movie has to get recorded onto the tape somehow.
