Self leveling is great. Much safer. I wish it allowed for a little more curl back. I like to be able to flatten the rim of the bucket out.

In the "good young USA & Canada" we are like the"wild west" compaired to European & Australia. ALL their Loaders have "manditory" self levelers on the loaders. Good thing you got the amplifying lower link-bars on the bucket curl. I would modify the bell-crank mechanism (extending it by maybe 1") where the top of the curl cylinders mount too.Thanks for the great Video and happy safe tractoring.

I have operated all kinds of loaders and backhoes and Skip loaders with and without the mechanical parallel linkage and I have never found any reason to dislike it!
I loved the parallel linkage ever since I drove my dad's JD backhoe back in the 60s. His Massey Ferguson tractor never had it and I hated it!
For the past 30+ years I've driven all kinds of tractors and loaders continuously on job sites and I have hated every tractor that did not have parallel linkage!
And I have dearly loved every single tractor that did have the parallel linkage!
Most tractors have the mechanical parallel linkage but one specific type has the hydraulic parallel linkage which is the high lift or telehandlers with a telescopic boom!
A lot of large loaders have parallel z linkage which is also garbage because of geometry is way off!!!
As the bucket goes up it keeps changing angles!
Something that I absolutely despise!!!
Some companies like John Deere & Cat have a fake bucket leveling device which is garbage and I can't stand it!!!
It fights me when I am trying to do something!!!
Parallel linkage is not comment on small tractors but it's a little more common on backhoes if they're ordered as a material handler because that means they'll be using forks on it.
All telehandlers come standard with the hydraulic parallel linkage.
I will watch more of the video and I take notes as I watch them so that I don't forget what I want to comment on.
I can see that you're going into the pile completely wrong.
You are not curling your bucket and raising the boom at the right time.
And you're spinning your tires. When you spin your tires you are losing traction.
And when you curl your bucket and raze the boom just write you can have dirt falling over the back of the bucket every time, unless the pile is too small.
You can also shake the bucket as you're raising the boom and that will throw dirt into the back of the bucket to make more room in the front of the bucket. This works with any kind of loader. (Except maybe on the newer computerized loaders where you may have to reprogram the loader bucket response to delay time 0)
My dad taught me that back in the 60s and it served me well all these many years.
On most of the loaders that did not have the parallel linkage you have the real danger of dumping material off the back of the bucket on to the machine or onto you!
A good friend of mine raised a bucket up high on a skid steer and a rock fell off the back of the bucket and fell on him and crushed his foot.
One more bucket feature that I can't stand is the twin levers instead of the joystick control!
And calling it self leveling is very restrictive cuz it does more than just level. It'll keep it at any preset angle that you want it to.
I have never heard any company use the term self-leveling. That must be a John Deere term.
If you don't want advice just let me know.
Some people don't want advice and they're jerks/a...holes about it!
As a retired Union operator we are taught to help each other whenever possible.
Maybe that's only for fellow union brothers and sisters!
I also spend many years running my dad's and my own tractor on large commercial rototilling, firebreak, orchard, and weed abatement jobs.
I was fortunate enough to be able to run antique tractors bailing hay One summer also.
Just to give you an idea of my experience.
Those people you mentioned that talk about losing flexibility of the angle, JD and Cat-Backhoes come standard with a feature that really screws with your angles. As the bucket goes up and down it fights you for the angles constantly and I hate those!
In years past I've also seen aftermarket companies that made the parallel linkage loaders for any size of any brand of tractor out there.
And they were probably cheaper to.
One brand even gave you the option of mechanical or hydraulic parallel linkage on their loaders.
But feel free to delete this comment anytime you want. 😁
Great job. It's really interesting to hear your thoughts since you switched from one style loader to another within a short time.
I put both through quite a bit of use and to me the MSL is clearly better but of course everybody’s needs are different

That is a little bit of a negative but what I did to compensate for it was get a larger bucket and the loader has a higher lift capacity so I’m pretty sure I can still move at least as much material per trip.
For me the lift capacity and the leveling feature outweigh it but if you mainly move dirt you might feel differently.

It is a definite improvement
I can see with moving pallets this loader would be a major improvement. With me scooping dirt in a down hill position I can see how not having the roll back being frustrating. With both loaders there are advantages and disadvantages. For your use the self leveling will definitely pay off.
Right, the lower rollback angle is annoying for dirt work, but for me it is outweighed by the other features.

I'm still on the fence with getting one for my 1023E, I think the difference based on Tim's videos isn't as dramatic as the 220R. Much of Tim's opinion was followed up by others as well. Plus I only do limited pallet fork work and mostly bucket work. However, as your video states and Tim's as well, it seems the 220R MSL is a no brainer. Good video.
I think it’s definitely a more difficult decision for the one series
Glad I specified the self leveling loader for my 2032R. Just took delivery Friday and it's everything I wanted and more. Salesman said he preferred the regular type loader.
Opinions vary and not everybody uses their tractor the same way
I have had both and I have put both through quite a bit of use and there’s no question that I would rather have the MSL

@@RockhillfarmYT I will be purchasing my 1025R this next week. Where my needs are similar in a small way to yours, my ground engagement needs are significantly less than most. My land is virually level and I'm planting several acres of grapevines. So post hole digging initially for trellis system posts, routine mowing, annual pruning raking and growing seasons spraying are my real needs. The MSL appears to be a "+" feature to consider.

Great review of the self leveling loader! I wish it was a option when I bought my 2038r. I can see a huge difference when using the pallet forks I also have a man cage that I use with my pallet forks and it would be great for that as well. Now I must decide if I am willing to spend the money to upgrade.
Yeah, it’s too bad that they didn’t release that option when they redesigned the tractors.
If you already have the other one, upgrading comes down to how much can you get for your other loader

The loader is definitely an upgrade
I now have a a 2007 j/d 3005 with a 300e non-self leveling. Would it be possible to upgrade to self-leveling without buying a new loader?
I have heard some aftermarket company makes some sort of bolt-on for the JD compact tractor which gives back the lost curl of the Mechanical Self Leveling loader. I'm assuming it tilts out the bottom of the bucket where it attaches to the JD Quick Attach, but I'm not sure. Does anyone here know if this actually exists and who sells it? Also, what is your experience with it? I assume the added leverage of pushing out the bottom of the bucket reduces the breakout force, at least a little.
@rockhill farm is it possible to override the MSL function by using the joystick to curl quicker or slower regardless of loader height? Many skidsteers have MSL but you can override as needed by touching the joystick.
Yes, that was my first concern when I was considering it but that works exactly the way you would want it to. it’s not an electrical self-leveling. It’s a mechanical self-leveling.
So if you’re completely flat and you’re raising the loader and then you decide you want to angle back you just angle back like you normally would and then if you continue to raise at that point it will maintain whatever angle you put it at
It really doesn’t self level it maintains angle and you can change that angle while you raise and lower if you want

My next step was a GTT search ad I didn't want to be tied to a new thread and 80 responses lol since you can override the MSL per say i don't see a disadvantage to getting it? I've watched your review and I'm not really hearing any downside over NSL. Maybe the small loss of curl back is the only downside?
That is the only downside and I suppose a second one is that there are more moving parts and possibly more places for it to fail in the future

One question how high can you lift the tote of firewood that weighs 1500 lbs? High enough to load on a trailer?
Yes, that’s why I have the self-leveling loader. Originally I could only lift it about 6 inches off the ground when I first got the tractor.
Then I did a series of videos on increasing the lift capacity. I got a hydraulic pressure gauge and tested that in one video I also got a lighter pallet fork frame from Artillian and that helped a little bit.
The biggest difference maker was switching to the self-leveling loader and that let me lift it high Enough to set it in a truck bed or my dump trailer or whatever I need to do

The MSL loader is a cheap upgrade when you buy the tractor but if you try to add it later it’s expensive

How much was this loader?
The MSL loader is $4600. The regular loader is $4000
If you already have the tractor it comes down to how much you can get in trade for your old loader

I’d be ordering a new one but the dealer didn’t have info when he was looking it up so I was curious.
The one thing I’d be concerned with is I have a front hydraulic post hole auger and from the videos I’ve watched... the MSL seems to bind up when fully dumped on the way down. Which that’s how I use the post hole auger.
Does it bind if you have it slightly adjusted from full dump?
I’ve never had that issue with it.

@@RockhillfarmYT I listen mostly to the left channel. Up until 8:52 of the video there is no voice on that channel, only music (not the whole time). When I started listening to both channels I could hear your voice but the music was a bit overpowering. Never had this problem with your videos before but thought I'd mention.
