    You know your stuff. I’ve been following your advice for a little over a year and I must say that at 74 years of age, I receive compliments (I still work where I meet scores of people daily) about how nice my skin is. It was NOT so nice last year. Your advice and product recommendations and application procedures are the reason. Thank you.

    I’m a teen and recently got prescribed a retinoid from my dermatologist. So obviously I didn’t get it for anti aging. I definitely am happy with how my skin looks. The fact it helped my acne tremendously and post acne marks is awesome. I’m glad I was introduced to retinoids, it’s the only thing that has worked for my acne so for that, I’m grateful. And thank you doctor dray for all your information. You have helped me learn about all this before I actually went to go see a dermatologist for my acne :)

      I totally agree. Retinol works FAST. It is usually noted that it takes 4-6 weeks to get over the adjustment period and 6 months to a year to notice the effects. My purge was much quicker, and the benefits were almost immediate.
      I was able to switch from .05 to .1 within three months. Once in a while I need to take a day or two off, but my skin is pretty good at communicating that.
      I have found an a.m. routine of Naturim vitamin C and Naturium niacinimide pair well with the p.m. routine of Tretinoin. Have had issues of other vitamine c products causing issues.

    My dermatologist explained how there is no cure for rosacea, they don't know why or how it suddenly occurs and to know and understand your triggers. She prescribed me Tretinoin 0.25 and sunscreen. Since 2017 I've noticed a significant improvement in my overall skin health and have pin pointed two major triggers for my rosacea flare ups. Spicy foods and red wines! I'm not giving either one up, but I definitely make plans the day I decide that I'm gonna indulge in either one 😂

      I suppose my first question is where you read this “report”. Because unless it was the American medical journal/dermatology section, then chances are you weren’t reading a valid source. She hasn’t mentioned anything like that in her extensive library of videos about retinols, so im going to assume based on these two things, that it is not true at all

    Thanks for the video, I like a little bit more in depth videos. What do you think of what David Sinclair says? He says it's unclear wether retinoids long term are good or bad for skin, since they reduce chaperone mediated autophagy, skin thinks it's a time of abudance, what might actually long term be negative. Also some others say it's not completely clear yet what the long term impact is of retinoids because it induces epigenome modifications and inhibits telomerase.

    My skin tolerates retinol well and I have seen beneficial effects from it like smoother skin and fewer lines. However, not everybody is so lucky. My husband cannot tolerate any form of it, it leads to dry irritated skin that actually has the appearance of increased lines. I recommended that he use my eye cream when he was looking for one and I was so confused when his eyes actually looked worse after using it.
    Btw, I am Asian but he has Irish skin that burns very easily and is probably quite sensitive, I wonder if that is a factor and the ability to tolerate retinol

      I have used tretinoin, with increasing strengths, for seven years with very little irritation, but very little benefit, either. I’ve also had laser treatments, with loads of crusting, but when the crusts finally healed, there was no improvement. I’ve been through two red light masks, with only a little improvement, and I’ve also tried Juvederm and Radiesse-which I mostly absorbed. I’d like a face lift, but where I live, that’s $100,000! That’s WITHOUT lifting the neck to the eyes😱

      Has he tried: putting a layer of moisturizer on first with maybe a petroleum, letting it dry before putting on his retinol? Also he could do short term contact therapy (: do those initial steps I mentioned, but leaving it on for 5 minutes before washing it off? I only ever had issue with retinol using it every single day, letting it get into skin folds, and using it after clay masks. Now when I use it, I just get extended breakouts which are frustrating

    I noticed that you recommended Neutrogena retinol products, but I've been wondering about ROC retinols. I have dry skin and the ROC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Max Hydration cream has hyaluronic acid. Also, their eye cream says it is good for dark circles. I've searched for which brand is better and haven't found any definitive information. What do you think? Is Neutrogena better than ROC? If so, why? Thank you!

    • @db-gb5xi
      @db-gb5xi 6 місяців тому +2

      Some other derm channels like the RoC retinol (especially the capsules). Some derms just have brands that they favor; doesn't mean that those brands aren't effective especially since it's a big brand.

    • @AllyKit
      @AllyKit 6 місяців тому +5

      I used a single RoC product for about a year in my 30s and it made a huge difference in my skin. (Years later I am on Tretinoin) It was the RoC Retinol Antiaging Night moisturizer in the tube. That’s all. My skin cleared up, looked smoother and brighter. I was using no other products and was completely uneducated about skin care at the time. I think Dr Dray prefers Neutrogena because they have some products that have no added fragrance. Roc scent didn’t bother me even though i have sensitive skin. Also Neutrogena has more R&D behind them but I thought my Roc cream did a great job and even the esthetician noticed the difference when I went for a facial.

    • @belleofthecamp6530

      Depends on the range of the light spectrum. Deep RED light (aprox 650 to 900nm) particularly 670nm is helpful for the eyes.
      Check with your eye doctor for your particular case.
      Natural and free of charge is deep red healing light is before 9am.

    Dr. Dray, how do you know if you can’t tolerate retinol? Like, is it ok to push through the burning as long as you can “handle it”? Or is the burning a sign to take a step back? How do you know when to step back vs. push through?

      She has a video on Retinol for beginners. I used that to start. I have very sensitive skin and started with Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair, unscented. I started with once a week and gradually increased frequency of use. Use only a pea-sized portion on clean, dry skin. Once it has absorbed, I apply my usual moisturizer. So important to wait til your skin is very dry and to wait until fully absorbed before adding moisturizer.

    Could you please elaborate on the bit at 4:48 ? I know you say here that retinol won’t age us more rapidly, but as a biochemistry student everything I know (which is limited when it comes to specifics about skin cells) points me toward the fact that increased cell turnover will age you faster. While I trust that you are telling the truth here, I can’t seem to wrap my head around that idea. The one thing that worries me about getting started on retinols is the “aging” of my DNA being sped up. My worry is that the telomeres on the ends of my DNA will become shorter even faster than they normally would when applying a retinol, thus aging me faster than normal over an extended period of time. I have tried doing my due diligence to learn more about the matter, but can’t seem to find anything pertaining to that idea.
