Ben, I have an extensive history with sailing and have just found this video. The comments you received from a great many of the peanut gallery were quite comical to say the least. I laughed my you know what off at several of them. Port and starboard where switched but you know that by now. In answer to the many blueprint requests I strongly recommend Mystic Seaport as a source for thousands of original drawings. Add your own scale and start building! My choice was a two masted gaff schooner designed by Capt. R. D. (Pete) Culler. I have the actual hull at 47' in length and for my model I chose 1/10th scale and worked in metric units. Thanks so much for the fine efforts!

What a beautiful build -- just fantastic work. Thanks for sharing. Btw, you have her tack descriptors reversed in the video. At 4:07 she is on a starboard tack and at 4:35 she is on a port tack (wind coming from port).

You have done a wonderful job on this schooner. I have one that I race most week ends . But not as nice as yours . Mine is only 3 feet long OAL. And no Evilboy37 , they are made to sail on their side like that .

You can create your own scratch building plans by buying a set of plans from a smaller boat, such as Elsie or Gertrude Theabaud, on line and do a little scaling math. You need these views: body plan with half breadths, deck plan, and the sail plan. Take what you have to the office store and have them enlarged to the desired scale; I've used 1/4" to the foot. You can find accurately printed plates with all the requirements by Skeene or Chappelle. I've taken a plan of Elsie from a bound book and used the drawing and table of offsets (measurements) to build a 16 foot replica (yes, that big).
Scratch building in the larger scales I believe is easier that the itty bitty scales; for one thing, the tools in an ordinary shop give you a better start. There are used Model Shipways plans available online that have details from the work of Chappelle. If you are stuck on the idea of cutting a page out of one of your prized books, just pick up a used copy online and an Exacto knife. To get a really good idea of the whole process in full scale, binge watch Leo Goolding's UA-cam series on rebuilding the Tally Ho, paying particular attention to the vids on design and rigging. Check it out.

you got your tacks wrong! looking from the back to front: when the sails are on the left side you are on starboard, when the sails are on the right side you are on port. just had to point that out. great design looks really cool!

naw, the motor didn't ruin it. a lot of full scale sailer's have an auxiliary engine of some sort for docking and doldrum conditions. it's not like he's using it to putter around the pond. looks like if he ever engages it is just to bring it in. I'll allow it

Beautiful, both the concept as well as the appearance. May I ask if this would be a so called "J-Boat"?. Talking about spirit, I wonder if there was Bourbon or Gin to be offered around those elegant decks. Now take the helm and fair winds Ladies and Lads.

No, it is not a J class yacht . This a Newfoundland schooner . a fishing boat of about the 1890's or 1920's . J class yachts were developed from this hull shape and raced in the 1930's for the America cup.

@@welshpete12 Thankyou Captain WP. I stumbled over a documentary on 'American Schooners' in the meantime to learn more about these fascinating designs. Seeing them in full fly is the most exhilarating analogy of the expression 'Fast & Bonnie' I happen to know. And to having learned from you that the most exclusive form of raceyacht was developed from a 'work horse' compliments that conception with plenty food for phantasie. :)

@J3NNYVO What? That is as schooner as it gets..... It looks like an old Gloucester fishing schooner. If it had one mast.... then you may call it a gaff rigged sloop, but this boat is most certainly a schooner.

At present I am building and repairing sailing dinghies but I built models, up to 6ft, as a teenager. I am building a free sailer sandwich style yacht at present, a rehearsal I suppose for when increasing age will no longer allow me to build full size craft. Ironic really, I found I could paddle the 6ft topsail schooner hull, (FG) and my next boat was a 16ft ply pirogue. Regressing to a second childhood?
