    Have you heard of “Write it now” Software? It allows you to move around chapters/poems super easily and let’s you transfer them to other forms such as Word documents.

    Yay!!! 🥳🥳 Im so glad you made this video! I love how similar yet distinctive our processes are.
    You bring up a lot of great industry secrets that people should be really aware of before deciding to publish their work.
    Also, side note, I’m pretty sure Danez Smith’s preferred pronouns are “they/them”.

      You are so right about Danez Smith and I didn't realize I said it wrong till editing and I thought I cut that part out because I didn't want to have missaid their pronouns but I guess I didn't. 😳

    I really liked your other video about compiling a poetry collection. It's been really helpful to me, even though I'm nowhere near having enough worthy poems to compile an actual collection with. It's just something I'd never thought about before, especially because untill recently I never read poetry collections in order. When I would compile little books for myself I would always just list them in the order they were written.

      I'm so glad these videos have helped you! Definitely don't put any pressure on yourself to publish a collection if you don't feel ready, but I would for sure recommend reading some collections! Reading a poetry collection back to front can paint as clear as story as a novel of it was done well! :)

    I’ve been trying to find out whether submitting a poem to a contest that I want to eventually publish in a book would be a mistake, because some of the contests I’ve looked at didn’t say if the rights to the poem would be returned to the writer or not. How do you recommend finding this out? I assume it’s a little different than the literary journals you talked about. This video has been really helpful. Thanks!

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  2 роки тому +1

      If there's no information on their website about how they deal with rights, I'd be suspicious, but you can always reach out and ask them. For normal submissions they will tell you they want to publish the piece if they accept it and you can ask any questions you need to before actually giving them the okay to use your poem. For contests it's a little trickier, but if they haven't provided that information and don't respond if you send a polite question, they could be a bit sketchy. Most of the time rights revert to the author after publication or a period of time after, but to keep your work safe it is better not to assume that since you never know who might want to raise a stink somewhere down the line. Especially if your collection does well once you publish it.

    Hey i am about to submit a full length poetry manuscript to traditional publishers, but I dont know what to include except acknowledgement and introduction and table of content, can you please let me know if something else is needed? By the way I always like your videos because you smile alot and it relax the viewers

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  2 роки тому +1

      The easiest thing is to pick up a few collections that are already published and sort of copy the cover materials they use and where they place it, but generally you'd have a title page, a copyright page, a table of contents, a dedication (if you want one), an acknowledgements page, and an about the author page. :) Good luck with your collection!!

    I have 31 poems, is that enough to publish, or should I write more poems?

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  2 роки тому

      It depends on a lot of factors. First of all, what do you want to do with the collection? 31 poems is enough for a chapbook but would normally not qualify as a full collection unless the poems are all pretty long in which case you may have a full length collection based on page count.

    Thank you for this video. What is more important when submitting a poetry manuscript? The topic or command of craft?

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  Рік тому +1

      In terms of selling and marketing a collection? Topic for sure. But having command of the craft is going to assure longevity because the people who recognize that and take notice are not only going to praise and recommend the collection to others, but come back to your work in the future.

      @@KayeSpivey The bulk of my poems are dealing with my personal life (family, love, self). I have about 20 poems that deal with politics, race, nature. Should I blend them all together? Should I have sections in the book? Should I write 2 seperate books? Aaaaaagggghhh!

    When you talk about documenting where ones work has been published previously, does that include ones UA-cam channel?

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  3 роки тому +1

      It depends. It's a good idea to keep track of where you've recorded your poem and posted it verbally, but more important where it's written and posted. Some journals will count verbal performances posted as published, but all would count posting it on your blog as published. However in the case of acknowledgements in a book, I personally wouldn't count anywhere I've posted my poetry on my own account. If another channel posted a spoken word performance I would include it, but in terms of reading on my channel I'd see that more as advertisement than publishing.

      @@KayeSpivey Thank you.
      I've only posted it on my UA-cam channel so far, although as I say, some of my work is directed at the children I work with in the form of emphasising phonic sounds or for Year projects for which I am planning to create a link for the texts to the poems as this is especially important with phonics where you need to show the different ways of making a phoneme.
