Great tips. I agree that people do need to have sampled some of your poems, before they are likely to buy your collection. With novels, if you write in a very specific genre or niche, a cover and blurb may be enough to convince readers. Not so with poetry. It definitely can be challenging, but is also rewarding.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. It couldn't have come at a better time for me, as I'm going to be publishing my first book of poetry in the next couple of days. Great advice, thanks again.
I totally agree with the marketing advice too. I tried Facebook ads. It was a colossal waste of money. I sold more books by connecting with my local bookstore and doing a book signing than I did by placing ads on Facebook.
I want tp really really really thank you for this information. I have watched other vids but everyone seems to rush through the info, but you are calm and explaining everything in color. I am a poet trying to publish, but clueless at this point. This video gives me some direction. Thank you
@@KayeSpivey . it really is. I am watching your video again right now. I truly appreciate the section where you discuss what should be in the front section and bavk of the book. The dedications and etc. This is remarkable information. I am almost done editing my content. But I still need a cover page and to organize it as well.
Thanks for the helpful video. Hope you are doing well! I’ve been checking your channel from time to time. I’ve never been disappointed in your content.
hey Kaye, for my table of contents, do you recommend I make it manual or is it fine I use the option on word to make it when submitting for publishing? if I use the word option then the titles become sort of like a hyperlink where if you click it then it takes you to that page, and the page numbers align better. when I try to do it manually I somehow cant align the page numbers that well. also, at the end of my manuscript, do I have to do a page where I write 'END?' because I know people who write fiction and non fiction usually do this.
If you use the option in word I would go over it very carefully and edit it for mistakes before you try to publish. It can be a useful tool but don't put your trust into it completely!
Doing a 'The End' page seems like it's fallen a bit out of fashion. If it feels more complete that way to you I don't think anyone will find it weird, but you definitely don't need it.
Hi Kaye, thank you for all your helpful advice. I have a collection of over 400 poems but I’ve been afraid to share them on social media. I heard publishers won’t publish poems that are already online. Is that a fact or myth?
Half and half. Some are strictly against it because they want first publishing rights and don't want to deal with the technicality that they were already published online. Some aren't so against it if it was on your personal blog for example. In general a journal looking for a single poem will want it to have not been posted or published anywhere online or in print to avoid any legal sketchiness, but a publisher looking for a collection won't mind if half the poems have appeared elsewhere since that is a form of marketing. :)
@@KayeSpivey that’s a relief. I feel more comfortable posting my poems on social media knowing that. Out of all your books which one would you want me to read the most?
@@MarkRGoujon LOL! Thank you for asking! My chapbook, An Isolated Storm is all older poetry now but it's a good introduction to my writing style nonetheless. My new collection is really too brash and raw to be one I could easily recommend to people. Go for Fragments if you're choosing one. It encompasses a variety of styles and I loved shaping the overall theme.
i have a question. for self publishing a poetry book. is it necessary to have an isbn for it? maybe like for a chapbook for example. especially if youre only gonna be selling it to a small market
It's not vital. If, say you plan to pass out books in person after a poetry reading, don't need one. If you want to sell it online through any major book distributor then yes it will need one.
No, but it's one of the easiest and you can do it at no cost to you. It the only one that will show on Amazon. Lulu and Ingramspark are others you can look into if you'd rather try another option, or you can make a collection by hand on your own if you have some skill with that.
Hi I am writing a poetry book and I would love to get your opinion about it. Please reply to my comment that would help me a lot. Thank you and God bless you

Thank you! And yes. It is much more rare for someone to just take a chance on a poetry book than it is for novels.

Good advice. For poetry that is the right way to have an audience and get your book published. Thanks

Yeah Facebook ads seemed pretty useless :/ Connecting with your local bookstore is such a good idea! Did you do a reading there too?
Kaye Spivey not at that bookstore, but I did lots of readings at different open mics around the city.
So. Much. Good. Info. Here. I’m definitely gonna use this advice if my manuscript doesn’t get picked up.
I'm glad!! I wish there were more sources of easily accessible poetry publishing info out there, so hopefully it helps some people!

@@KayeSpivey, let me rephrase my question. Which poetry book would you like a new review most on Amazon? 😂😉👍
If you publish via Amazon through kdp, are you also allowed to post your poems on instagram?
Yes! You still own your own intellectual property.
