Yes, this is the best size to go for and Amazon itself says exactly this. Most people blow this off and that means a smaller distribution.

I disagree about the trim size. From what I have seen poetry books tend to be smaller: 5"x8" or 5.5"
x8.5". Some great marketing ideas, though. I self-published my first book at the start of this month. I don't have a platform and didn't want to foist it on family or friends so I tried a couple of book review services and running Amazon ads. There has been limited traction so far but, as you say, poetry is a difficult sell. It is possible I priced it a dollar too high so I will look at adjusting that. I do have some poems in journals so perhaps the next time I publish I'll get a link to the book put in my bio.

Amazon itself states "The most common trim size for books in the U.S. is 6" x 9" (15.24 x 22.86 cm) and is a regular trim size. When setting up your book, this is the default". For maximum distribution we go with the defaults. Poetry is a very difficult nut to crack when it comes to getting sales. If you are a well known poet, it is easy to get your books to sell. However, when is the last time you took a chance on a poet you had never heard of? Even with ads aimed at your poetry, this is very difficult.

Just check my name in Amazon. I can tell you most of my books are under pen names. It is almost always a terrible idea to use your actual name on your books for a number of reasons I discuss with my clients.
