I cooked it in almond milk with a squirt of agave nectar and a pinch of salt so when it was done it was like porridge. I added banana to it to add some more sweetness. Yum

It's a great alternative to brown rice. A light flavor and good texture makes this so versatile you can incorporate it into almost anything. It soaks in the flavor of any sauce and is light enough to mix into your veggies, breakfast egg dishes and even enjoy a bowl on its own. For us ladies the iron is fantastic and for the men the protein is a great addition to your workout regime. Diabetics and heart patients should definitely find many uses for this in the kitchen.

I cook the quinoa just as described. I chop fine celery, onions, carrots and colorful bell peppers, cilantro, and fine pressed garlic. You can also add finely chopped spinach. Mix it all up and sauté in a skillet add salt. Then combine with the cooked quinoa. It taste great and so colorful as well. I also do the same thing with cooked barley.

I recently used quinoa in my stuffed bell peppers in place of the rice I typically use. It was wonderful. I used ground turkey, Mexican spices, quinoa, corn, black beans, petite diced tomatoes, avocado, garlic and red onion and then topped with a small amount of sharp cheddar.... Oh my gosh! SO good!

I love Quinoa but don't cook it often enough. I just purchased a 4c rice cooker used it on Farro or Emmer wheat. Once I figured out the grain to water ratio it is perfect every time. Made Quinoa today using 1 grain to 2 water ratio. Quinoa was rinsed and allowed to drain. Flavored with manzanilla olives, onion, garlic and zaatar seasoning w/splash of vinegar. Perfect flavor and texture. Important to let rest after cooking for 15min to half hr. Then fluff for excellent mouth feel. Thanx for your enthusiasm.

I had tried quinoa, but after I went to Peru and learned a lot more about it, quinoa is now my favorite "grain" and is a regular menu item in my wild game dishes. If you eat a big bowl full of rice you feel sluggish, then hungry again in 2 hours. After eating a bowl of quinoa, I feel energized. I also like cooking it in chicken broth instead of water, (or half and half) giving it even more flavor.

Dani, I love your videos! I wanted to share a quinoa "recipe" with you, to be served as a hot side dish. After the quinoa is all cooked, add freshly grated ginger, orange zest, a little fresh juice from the orange, a pinch of salt, and then you can drizzle on a bit of oil (like sesame oil). It's a delicious healthy side with loads of flavor! (Another option is sprinkling shaved almonds, toasted sesame seeds, or dried cranberries on top.) It's so aromatic, and I like to make this to go with thai stir-fry. Thanks for all your informative videos!

My friend taught me a simple recipe that I am actually going to make tonight. It's a quinoa salad. Ingredients are 2-3 cups of quinoa, 2 chopped peppers, 1 chopped tomato, half a cucumber chopped, tofu and feta cheese. You can of course add whatever veggies you want. And then the dressing is a bit of olive oil, lemon juice along with some oregano and parsley. It is served cold. I am obsessed with this recipe!

I can't get enough of it. I find myself stocking up on it and I've incorporated it into all facets of my diet. Quinoa is what it is. You could eat it plain and still enjoy it but it's so versatile it begs for creative culinary adventures! I cook only a cup at a time (easier to measure) but I never eat all of it. About half. I have done it with shrimp, chicken, veggies.....everything! It's really good at absorbing flavours no matter the profile.

Quinua tastes really good. Someone asked if it tastes like white rice, but rice doesn't have much flavor. In Peru we fry some (lots) garlic in oil, add salt, then the measure of rice and the water. So our rice is a tad garlicky and a bit salty. If you do the same with quinua, it will probably taste similar. But unlike rice, quinoa has this particular taste, a bit nutty. It may have some bitter aftertaste if you don't rinse it first. You don't get boxed quinoa in Peru, you either get it bagged (like rice is sold here) or in bulk. We always wash it and pick it, because it's not unusual to find little pebbles in it.

My only quibble with this video is your stating that it is a "complete protein." The whole idea of "incomplete proteins" is a myth, so long as you are eating whole, natural foods. As long as you are eating sufficient calories from varied whole foods, proteins and amino acids are not going to be a problem.

    • @jck9590
      @jck9590 9 років тому +3

+Kanga Banga ...That would only be true if you are one of those .01% of people who has the time and $$ to have a perfectly balanced diet from a trained nutritionist.
And amino acids are very important, not only for muscle repair, but as hormone and neurotransmitter regulators. As a CFT, I can't tell you how many "depressed" people I started training, on loads of psyche drugs... that no longer needed them once I adjusted their diet properly.
In the real world with an average working person, (especially if you are a vegetarian or consume little meat or dairy), getting the kind of varied foods that include all the essential proteins is quite challenging. Possible, but it takes ALOT of meal planning.
If something like Quinoa can easily supply the non-essential Aminos that the body cannot produce, then it is a very valuable dish to quickly add into your normal foods on the go...

Thank you, very informative video. I never rinsed my quinoa before now, and now that I do my quinoa tastes significantly better :D
However, I would take out the 'complete protein' remark.
The whole complete vs incomplete protein narrative is made up to sell whey protein powder to people who believe that they will lose all their muscles if they are 'protein deficient.' (source: long time vegan and medical student)

Um, you are very nice and have allot of good info and ideas but I if I may suggest that you do some research on proper or optimal digestion because if you mix protein with fruit it won't digest completely. And mixing dairy into the mix is gonna make it even harder for your body to digest. Proteins are best eaten by themselves or with leafy vegetables. Fruit is also best digested by itself or eaten with leafy vegetables or more fruit as long as you don't mix acid or sub-acid fruit with sweet fruits. Peace/Love

Quinoa is "the sacred food of the Incas." It must be pronounced keen-wa because the word is in Quechua (Ketch-wa) rather than in Spanish.

    • @davidcattin7006

The Quechua word is kinwa or kinuwa. Quinoa is Spanish and, therefore, is pronounced in Spanish - KEY-NO-AH.
