This must be the most understated, yet most sophisticated group in the world. Each song is a work of art, while their concept albums are legendary. Despite the changes in personnel and sad loss of its its founding members - barring the truly exquisite Annie Haslam - whose 5-octave voice is the closest one may get to heaven - its a testament to their musical genius that they’re still touring and performing in this millennium. I’ve listened to them from the 70’s - and still do - and their music is a wonderful inspiration and remains as fresh as ever. Long live Renaissance who brought so much of joy to many of us.
My God! I almost burst in tears when I found this restored video, a great, great English band from zillions of years ago. When you listen this marvelous way of make music you just can realize the abyss on wich music has came down after almost half of century. I guess never has been happened something so disturbing in cultural history as the shittty music many made today. In comparison, this is like arrive to the Everest of music knowing you are all alone and no one arrive to make you company. I still have the original Ashes are Burning vinyl album from 1974, a masterpiece of beauty and balance, and later on I buy the double CD wich includes Prologue and Ashes are Burning. Thanks for share this musical jewel!
This is the ROCK genre at his BEST! Stunning VOCALS, classicaly trained musicians, beautiful compositions! Like STHENDAL said: For the happy FEW! (Le Rouge et le Noir). No Hall of Fame can understand THIS level!
In my opinion, the best Prog rock band to have ever assembled. I know that's controversial, and most people would disagree with me, but I am STILL listening to them all the time. I recently sold most of my LPs and CDs. I kept all of theirs though. 🙀
Good for you. I'm okay with that claim. Not my favourite band, but definitely in my Top 10 - and, considering who the other bands are (you might guess), it' still an honour to rank there. I'd keep all of their albums too - as I told someone recently, they're "one band whose music I couldn't live without".
@@MikeFlood-oe3tu That is an interesting question. What is my top 10? The rest is history. Thank you for the comfort for the past 50 years. Every tune became part of my life. With love❤
I fell in love with them from that concert - on a tape that a friend brought me. I had a bunch of people over (I was 15 and my mom was out of town, of course!), and he popped that little cassette into my tape player and said "You're going to like this...." I wound up leaving the party to go listen where it was quiet, elsewhere in the house... and 50 years later, I'm still listening to Renaissance. In college, as a voice major, I could sing right along with Annie - every high note. That's gone now, as it is for her too. We saw her in concert maybe 7 or 8 years ago, in a small club venue. Even with vocal changes, it was still wonderful.
That was an incredible performance from one of my favorite bands EVER! Taking nothing away from the entire band but Annie Haslam's voice is truly stunning.
Amazing bass-work by Camp. It takes strong hands to play a Ric the way he's playing. What an amazing band. Top of their powers. Missing Tout and Dunford.
Was never familiar with their music back in the day - phenomenal! Especially love the drummer and vocals. The songwriting and performance are exquisite! Ahh- the 70's - when one still needed an attention span to listen to music....
always been a great fan of progressive bands like "Van der Graaf Generator" or "King Crimson", but I always loved "Renaissance". they were the perfect link in between classical and rock music. enyoy this video!
This seriously needs an official release before it gets lost forever , Jon camp is easily the most amazing bass player had it not been for his unique lead bass guitar style they wouldn't of had such a signiture style & sound - they never sounded anything like Renaissance without Jon camp on rickenbacker bass.
They also would not have sounded like Renaissance without all members of the Classic Line up right here especially without the Operatic Voice of Annie and John on Classical piano!
A treasure of a band. Progressive rock at its best! "Ashes Are Burning" always gives me goosebumps and my hair stands up when Annie belts out in an other worldly voice " Imagine the burning embers......Ashes are burning the WAY!.." My favorite song of theirs combines progressive with classical with rock with an operatic cameo! Beyond wonderful:)
I could watch this over and over. This band is as good as any prog rock group and better than most. John Tout should be ranked up with Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks etc. I prefer listening to this performance over the overly orchestrated CD versions. What ever happened to beautiful melodies and harmonies? BTW - I've had a crush on Annie for 50 years!
Beautiful sounding band.. their aura is beautiful too..lovely clothing..decorum..nothing grungy, vulgar and crass...just beauty all the way...soft faces..they don't look like the hardened criminals of todays music scene ...not really joking but it sounds funny...they were/are surreal..
I was lucky - I saw them at least 3 times, and a 4th once the band had broken up but Annie was still able to do some of their songs with different musicians backing her up.
Posting this 12 days after this video was added. Glad to see this got 12,400 views in such a short time. The appreciation of good music isn't dead in 2021. What great musicians, all of them.
I first saw and heard Renaissance at Liverpool Uni in early 76 and was left amazed at what I heard. They finished with the full 25 minute plus version of Ashes complete with glitterball. A while later I bought the Live at Carnegie Hall album. It remains my favourite album of all time. Just beautiful music.
I’m so glad I got to see this lineup in ‘76. I never tire of Annie’s voice and sway. Her vocal 20 years later on Yes’ Turn of the Century with Steve Howe is mesmerizing.
They were the most competent and musically intriguing of prog bands, with beautiful, poetic lyrics delivered by the singular Annie Haslam. Just superb all around.

Okay, I get that popular music tastes change over time, but I sure wish that young people would have access to groups of their generation that play this kind of music. I was into hard rock back then, but this band expanded my music education and appreciation.
This is great footage I have been listening to them since I was in college in 1976. I saw them at Alexandra Palace in London one Christmas Eve where they were support band for Wishbone Ash, one of my memorable concert. I must have listened to ashes is burning so many times, Annie Haslam is one of the few singers who can hit 5 octaves, perfect singer and musicianship
Love Jane. Annie is great and deserves every accolade she ever received but Jane was also such a beautiful singer and beautiful soul. What is she doing now? I recall she was in Illusion which was parts of the original Renaissance and they put out at least two great records. I still listen to Out Of The Mist fairly often.
@@debracheckjanisch168 Jane and the three other original Renaissance members recorded another album in 2001 ua-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_mMhr9DkMYIdePAviH35qiBhk7cMZ6alPc.html She has also sang on a couple of Jim McCarty's albums. Other than that I'm afraid I don't know much.
I can't say how often I have watched this since I discovered it a month ago, but man, it get's better every time. I really love the tangible raw energy compared to the studio versions and how everybody and especially Annie is visibly absorbed in the music. My favorite part: when Annie sustains the high notes in the last part of "Ashes". Gives me shivers every time. :-)
Just wonderful! Incredible complex compositions, melodic bass lines, Annies angelic, crystal clear voice... Man, how I miss this kind of music. I was only 7 when this was recorded, but I love the music from the late sixties and early seventies and in particular prog rock. Thanks for finding and sharing this gem!
Truly a gem - thanks for this. Real musicians playing real music live in a studio. Guess what kids, this is how it should be done! Never easy doing it live because so many things can go wrong, but this is fantastic all around.
Great intro in French what little I could pick up, he laid out the Yardbirds connection with the early days of Renaissance. Information not bandied about much today.
Great performance! I am fortunate to have lived at a time when this and much other superb music was created. I have been able to see Renaissance live several times in the last decade, and hope to be able to see them perform again in the future.
Luckily, I got to see Annie Haslam in 2014. Too bad the originals were long gone, but the music was just as great. Very under rated and underappreciated, imo.
At first, thanks so much for sharing this great footage of one of my favourite bands. I discovered them not earlier than in 1984, so it was after their heydays. Being a drummer I find it remarkably Terry Sullivan obviously playing a silver sparkle 70s Gretsch drumset, as later on he switched to Slingerland. Another special thing is the smaller cymbal on the right hand side of his ride cymbal - it is a Paiste Sound Edge bottom hi hat cymbal, normally not used as a crash cymbal. I have always liked his light and swingy drumming style. I wish I had the possibility to see them in those times...
In the epic version of 'Can you understand' live at Carnegie Hall (June 20, 21, 22, 1975) I love his drumming supported by the NY Philharmonic Orchestra and Jon Camp who holds the bass figure. They are amazing. One of my favorite all time rock songs.
The very best music band in the world... no other band comes even close. Each of them were 100% genius, including the song writer that the majority do not give attention to Beth Thatcher. After living and traveled to 60 countries, I never found one that could match. The first time I listened to them was in Sept 1979 and since them they did not leave my heart... I listened to their perfect songs (with a few exceptions) over 10,000 times and never get tired and only after the first 2 or so decades I was able to start learning some of the secrets which normally we do not realize. If there is perfection is popular music.. they are THE ONE!
I was 12 when this was recorded. Wish I had known about Renaissance back then but didn't discover them until many years later. Thanks for the video share.
I still remember the day 48 years ago I first heard this group…in my earphones from a local FM station while doing homework. Like nothing I’d ever heard before. Listening again now with headphones. The sound is magnificent and immediate. So unique
Best lineup of Renaissance with an amazing performance. All on point.flawless at their craft resulting in an recording for all fans to enjoy. Jaw dropping. Thanks for posting this gem!
Great document ! 32 minutes of happiness... and for once I hear them talk in my native language... The late John Tout is speaking quite OK in French. Thanks a lot for uploading this. The quality is really good for a video that is really old. and the filming is good too.
I like these versions of the songs, much better than some other recorded live performances from that era. This one in particular doesn’t have the piped in orchestration, Annie fills in for those parts with her amazing vocals, using her voice as an instrument.
Thanks so very much for sharing. Now all we need is some footage (if not a full concert) of the classic lineup with an orchestra. It's a shame so little concert/performance footage of the band exists but I'll take what I can get. :)
This video is amazing and gives me morale for the inconvenience of not being able to attend Renaissance in the cancelled Night of the Prog in Lorelei (Germany) this year and also in 2020 (also cancelled). The interview to John Tout in the introduction is fantastic, explaining why he was considered a soft spoken and well-educated legendary keyboardist. There is a surprising cite to Franz Listz as favorite musician. Not to Prokofiev (as in his shirt of the back cover of A Song for All Seasons) or to Rimsky-Korsakov (for Scheherazade and one of the last movements of Things I Don´t Understand). Probably because Michael Dunford was mainly involved in the selection and composition of this music and he was very interested on Russian composers.
There are traces of Debussy's compositions in his work too! John was an amazing pianist, he had "the touch", an incredible feel in his playing. All members of this great (an unique in its style) band were marvellous musicians. This is the way most of their gigs were played back then: no symphonic orchestra (like on some greats tracks of their studio an the "Carnegie Hall" albums), no tapes running... just them with their instruments. It's curious how they managed to play many "orchestral parts" just with Annie's voice and John's piano and (later) some synths. Great work! Thanks for posting this video.
Wow! What treasure! What a wonderful video, great quality of image and sound. I've enjoyed their music from 1976 on when I bought Live at Carnegie Hall and started searching for all their albums from then on. Great band at their peak. Great songwriting. Love it! Many thanks for posting this video ❤️
At the end of 1972 noone of my friends knew The Renaissance, when I first listened 1 song of Prologue (Rajah Khan), but in the years later on, it was one of my all-time favorite bands, even not so successfull and prominent. Ok, due lack of success the Renaissance finally disbanded in the end of the 80ies. Annie is living, old now, near Philadelphia (Doylestown), Pennsylvania, in the US. Anyway, it was my favorite band. And this video of a recording at RTL studios, I never saw it and did not know it. So awesome. BTW, I was glad in summer 1973 when on vacation in the Netherlands near Wassenaar, where I found in a small disc shop and purchased this album "Prologue" of the band.
Nunca tinha visto esse video, impressionante! Obrigado por compartilhar esse raro material. Lembrando que esse ano, 2023, Ashes Are Burning está completando 50 anos de lançamento!

OMG, that glory note at the end of "Prologue", devine!!
Bellissimo!!!!
Great document ! 32 minutes of happiness... and for once I hear them talk in my native language... The late John Tout is speaking quite OK in French. Thanks a lot for uploading this. The quality is really good for a video that is really old. and the filming is good too.
Many thanks for this extraordinary upload. This is Renaissance at their absolute peak. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Je suis heureux d'avoir plus de 50 ans et d'avoir connu cette merveilleuse époque
When music was music...
You 're right, very right...
Annie Haslam could sing the phone book and enthrall the audience.
Man... Wow... This is exceptionally good.
Still sounds so good after all these years. Classic! Merci Beaucoup Renaissance. 😎💙👍
Fantastic. Absolutely ROCKS!
How good it is to feel tears on my face again, thank you.
Wow! What treasure! What a wonderful video, great quality of image and sound. I've enjoyed their music from 1976 on when I bought Live at Carnegie Hall and started searching for all their albums from then on. Great band at their peak. Great songwriting. Love it! Many thanks for posting this video ❤️
Some of the BEST music ever!
Just fantastic. Amazing musicianship all around.
I have the original album and well preserved for 53 years.
The Voice of an Angel says my mother when listening to Annie...
absolutly fantastic! The arrangements are great since ithey done in 1974.The studio version is best,of course.
One of my favorite bands growing up, and I still love them. RIP Mickey and John
Wow! As I remember a totally wonderful band!
This was the year I saw them in the old Jax,Fl. coliseum , Turn of the Cards Tour. Amazing performance, thanks for posting this.
Nice! 👍I saw them in Indianapolis in 1974, as well! Then; again in 1978 (Tucson).
Gracias. Mi banda favorita de progresivo. Mexico.
Another great band, like Gentle Giant, Caravan, Camel etc, did not receive same praise on radio as other, lesser bands
Such a crying shame Renaissance didn't get their desirved credit. Check out turn of the friendly card
